That sounds like wild speculation. I can't see how a band the size of U2 can fail to have success in the album charts, even if they don't do so well singles-wise.

The song will end up top 5, and sell below average but that doesn't matter as U2 aren't really about singles.

The album will be #1 selling 80k+ in it's first week and will steadily fall so that it's sales are good enough for them to consider it an average success.

Peaking outside the Top 10 doesn't mean flop! For me hits are Top 40 singles. If the single peaks outside the Top 10, it's a smaller hit, but definitely a hit!Not every single-hit needs to be a Top 10 hit!

No Line on the Horizon may get a a lack of promotion and stay at top 40 for 3 weeks.

I beg to differ stay positive, U2 are album sellers they have been in the music business for over 30 years, how is this album going to be any different from the rest of their back catalogues. There is no other decent album out apart from U2 for the next few weeks, they have literally got the #1 album in the bag.

Sorry, but there is simply no way this album will flop. 'POP' was considered a flop by their standards and it still sold 7-8m copies, which is clearly not a flop. Whether this will outsell the 9.5m selling HTDAAB or the 12m selling ATYCLB is unlikely, but as someone who loves both those albums and who has just heard NLOTH, this is their best album since Acthung Baby by quite a margin. It is simply increadible. It's like a mix between their classic 80's sound of JT and The unforgetable Fire, their 90's experimental material and something completelly new. I like Get On Your Boots (after many listens), but after hearing the album, I can safefy say it was an awful choice as the lead single, as it is by far the worst song on the album and completelly stands out. Maybe that was their intention though? Either way, they are the biggest band in the world, and have a massive loyal fanbase - and after reading on the various U2 forums today the reaction to the new album, they cannot believe how good this is. It has been getting great reviews so far from the media. Don't predict the albums success on the single, because overall U2's fans were not overly pleased at 'Boots' but pretty much everyone who has heard the album adore it, so I predict it will go to #1 in at least thirty counrties and sell at least 8m in total.

Oh and it won't get a lack of promo, their are pushing it very hard. An opening performance of 'Boots' at the Grammy, despite not being nominated for anything, they will perform at the Brits tonight, then in Germany, then Paris, then back to the UK for BBC radio and Jonathan Ross. Then they are performing 5 nights on David Letterman in the US. They will start their tour (which is prob going to be the biggest tour in music history) with the second single then coming out.

Yes. While I think the single is rubbish I doubt that will impact the album greatly. U2 have a lot of fans, so to talk of the album dropping out of the chart in 3 weeks is simply bizarre.

The album is AWFUL.. sorry, but after listening to it, it's just DREADFUL. They need to go away :(

You are most definatly in the minority with that opinion of the album. By saying they need to go away, I take it you are not a fan, so why would you bother downloading their new album the very day it leaked? Seems a bit odd. I would never be that eager to hear an album by a band I thought should go away

I can't see the album flopping - I can't even see it not making the number 1 spot. In addition to their name and reputation they've got some serious promotion coming up. The Brits tonight, The Culture Show on BBC2 next Tuesday (repeated & extended on Friday) and Jonathon Ross on that Friday too.

Norma

I really do not think they will 'flop' to the extent of what people are thinking - U2 have proved as consistent sellers NO MATTER WHAT THEY BRING OUT. :o
even though the first single is really poor... this album will be #1 with out a doubt..
There's no way the album won't go to #1. I'm not a massive U2 fan, but Get On Your Boots is just awful. And it's the general consumption of a lot of people. It just doesn't sound right. But even the fans that don't buy the single, i'm sure they will buy the album. I've heard good stuff about the album, so i'll give it a listen in a bit.

i really like U2 theyve been away for ages and its nice to have them back and i really hope they do well. The Brits tonight will give them a boost!

THEY ARE NOT FLOPS AT ALL!

Agreed. At the very worst the album will debut at #1 and spend around 3 months in the chart.

Lack of Promotion?

Just coz he may not be a U2 fan doesn't mean he can't download the album to see what he think's of it! He can't exactly slag off an album, which he hasn't heard can he?

I think you have missed the point. Would you download an album from a artist you don't like? And if you did would you expect to like it? Probably not, no.
