The THOMPSON TWINS scored a hat-trick at number one in 1984. This annoyed Morrisey and co. (THE SMITHS) greatly! SIMPLE MINDS did go all the way, but now they were down. EURYTHMICS (Dave and Annie) went all the way too, and the big hit, and well played single "Here Comes The Rain Again". MICHAEL J was up and down all year long (again). BILLY JOEL kept the singles coming from "An Innocent Man". MADNESS "Kept Moving" and "Michael Caine" was a single. LIONEL RICHIE was happy, as the album reclimbed, and the number one single was on the way for him. QUEEN crashed in that week with"THE WORKS". What a great album, that was. Giving them, many a new single throughout `84. BIG COUNTRY, and THE ALARM scored reasonable top ten albums...as PAUL YOUNG reclimbed. VAN HALEN gave us "1984"...Unfortunately "Jump" was the only major single success from that. U2 were Live, Under A Blood Red Sky, and were number 1 in December 1983 with it. Those VARIOUS ARTISTS had been hanging around since Valentine`s Day, with those "Motown Love Songs", by way of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross etc. THOMAS DOLBY celebrated his album success, and single success too. CULTURE CLUB were up again. ALAN PARSONS couldn`t quite get the single hits. NOW THAT`S WHAT I CALL MUSIC, the first time round...and KOOL AND THE GANG were "In The Heart"....which became a subtitle on the single hit "When You Say You Love Somebody".

The 1984 Singles chart:

01 01 99 BALLOONS - NENA

02 05 JOANNA/TONIGHT - KOOL AND THE GANG

03 02 RELAX - FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD

29 NE HELLO - LIONEL RICHIE

30 NE YOUR LOVE IS KING - SADE

31 NE MY GUY - TRACEY ULLMAN

35 45 FRAGGLE ROCK THEME - FRAGGLES

36 49 IT`S RAINING MEN - WEATHER GIRLS

37 34 CRY AND BE FREE - MARILYN

38 47 HELP - TINA TURNER

39 NE ROBERT DE NIRO`S WAITING - BANANARAMA

40 25 NEW MOON ON MONDAY - DURAN DURAN

The 2nd of 3 weeks for NENA. We never heard "TONIGHT" on the radio in 1984, although it was a double A with "JOANNA" for KOOL AND THE GANG. RELAX sang FRANKIE, but were only heard on Independant Radio. Where over on Radio One, SIMON BATES stated "We do not intend playing this record, due to the nature of the lyric". I can think of a million reasons why some of today`s songs should be given that acalade, but no longer do! NIK KERSHAW finally scored, as he flopped with the original release of "I Won`t Let The Sun Go Down On Me". Which was rereleased following the success of "WOULDN`T IT BE GOOD". ROCKWELL was the son of a certain Barry Gordy (producer, and founder of Motown). Here he teamed up with Michael Jackson. BREAK MACHINE smashed up with "Street Dance", as the world went "body popping". SLADE were back, or was it SADE on TOTP? Well SADE did get called "SLADE", remember that?! No doctors needed for THOMPSON TWINS! VAN HALEN having their biggest hit. HOWARD JONES with a slightly forgotten song. MATT BIANCO were not as bad as somebody called them on Saturday morning BBC TV! SHANNON nicked a BARRY WHITE title, but not song! HOT CHOCOLATE made me remember when the brilliant KENNY EVERETT describe the song as "I Gave You My Heart...Liver, Soul, and Onions!" MATTHEW WILDER could not get the follow hit to "Break My Stride", which was suposed to sound like a Euro hit called "Fraction too Much Friction", and one "NEIL FINN" of SPLIT ENZ/CROWDED HOUSE fame. JULIA AND COMPANY couldn`t follow up "Breakin`Down (Sugar Samba)". SOFT CELL gave us "Down In The Subway". Rather forgotten! MADONNA had a hit, after flopping with the original release of "Borderline". ALEXEI SAYLE, maybe one of the better "Alternative" comedians...well when compared to "French And Saunders!" CARMEL had "More More More", following up "Bad Day". RE-FLEX couldn`t follow up "Politics Of Dancing". The Thorn Birds was the tv series, and Henry Mancini gave us the proper theme. Although there was another by JUAN MARTIN. MEL BROOKS was supposed to be giving us a comedy song? TRACEY ULLMAN took MADNESS` "MY GIRL", and turned it into "MY GUY". FRAGGLE ROCK was the ITV Sunday series, of Muppet like stuff, and there was the theme. Was this the reason, that MICHAEL GRADE spent millions of our money on EASTENDERS, so he could shelve DR WHO, to repeat The MUPPET SHOW, and ruin BBC TV...Then 20 years on, do the same to ITV?! :o MARILYN followed up "Calling Your Name", but I can`t even remember "CRY AND BE FREE"...which was exactly what happened to him! WANG CHUNG were the first artists, to feature on TOTP when they were outside the top 40 at 42, for a long while...this pushed them in the next week. TINA TURNER got a number 38, on the MRIB chart, but stayed at 40 for 3 weeks on the GALLUP chart. The WEATHER GIRLS flopped in 1983, but rereleased in 1984...which was also the year when LES DAWSON took over "BLANKETY BLANK" from TERRY WOGAN...coincidence there! Think about it!

Let`s take a look at the pre-orders, while awaiting the singles chart:

Pre-order Singles

01 ISLANDS IN THE STREAM - COMIC RELIEF 9th Mar

02 LOVE ETC - PET SHOP BOYS 16th Mar

03 FALLIN` DOWN - OASIS 9th Mar

05 THINKING OF YOU - KATY PERRY 9th Mar

08 IN FOR THE KILL - LA ROUX 16th Mar

09 WON`T GET OVER - SEPTEMBER 9th Mar

10 MYSTERY - BLK JKS 10th Mar

From this week onwards, I have decided to not include those pre-orders, that are all ready charting in the top ten on downloads alone. It will give us a better idea of those up and coming releases. From this it look`s like the top 40 on Sunday 15th March, will at have at least 5 new entries, with September`s newie having an outside chance.

The Pre-order Albums:

01 ALL I EVER WANTED - KELLY CLARKSON 9th Mar

02 RELAPSE - EMINEM 13th Apr

03 FEARLESS - TAYLOR SWIFT 9th Mar

04 YES - PET SHOP BOYS 23rd Mar

05 SELDOM SEEN KID LIVE AT ABBEY ROAD - ELBOW 30th Mar

06 21ST CENTURY BREAKDOWN 11th May

08 NOW 72 - VARIOUS 6th Apr

09 GRACE/WASTELANDS - PETE DOHERTY 16th Mar

10 ALL THE PLANS - STARSAILOR 9th Mar

Kelly for number one album on the 15th March. Ronan trying to cash in, on Mother`s Day! 22nd March, could be his week...or Pete Doherty. Has Pete still got fans? Or do we all think he is a messed up unfortunate, that needs help? Looking at the entertainment world news in general this week, we have the ITV cuts, the Jade Goody "sad" news. Was it not so sad with her shenanigans of reality tv, a couple of years back? Michael Jackson`s final performance...something we`ve waited for...for years. Oh ho, a bit of politics creeping in there, and topical! :P

Hang on for the up to minute singles charts, coming soon....

No surprise for THE SATURDAYS, or KELLY CLARKSON...Maybe some for TAKE THAT, beating TAYLOR SWIFT there. There I was discussing TAKE THAT in the betting shop the other day, and someone decided that "Greatest Day" (the previous single) sounded like a KEANE song...was it "CRYSTAL BALL", I wondered?

Not going to bother with the top downloads, as it is basically the same as the combined physical/download top ten...except Shontelle is reversed with Lady GaGa and "Just Dance".

) Position without downloads alone. Also without downloads alone are 39 Killers - Spaceman, and 40 Will Young.

= Position on Chart Show tv

FLO RIDA beats the SATURDAYS...some unjustice there! We were hoping on Weekend physicals to push the Saturdays, but we can forget that. It won`t happen. Outside the 50, we find LEONA - RUN, ANNIE LENNOX, KILLERS - SPACEMAN, ENRIQUE, NE-YO - MAD, WILL YOUNG, LADYHAWKE, JENNIFER HUDSON, KANYE, GARY GO, RUDENKO...that`s the top 61. ..Gary with the biggest fall of the week. FRIENDLY FIRES are in the top 70.

NOTE: These are not the Official charts. They are based on Chart Show tv`s chart, but with added sales (minus airplay), to make it the most up to date chart, at this point. The chart show top 20 video chart, can been see on Saturdays between 9am & 10.30, and Sundays between 11am & 12.30pm (Sky Channel 365).

KC selling more physicals than take that! :o Shame on the TT fans!

Well I'm not buying more than one! And I wouldn't have bought that one if I'd known how 'orrible the 'b' side was!

Norma

Thanks Dave

Sorry, been at work... Loving the pre-orders for Love Etc. Any idea where it's likely to enter on release week? I really hope top 10.

Beggin by Frankie Valli should be RE by the way.

Looking at it...it will probably miss the top ten because again the downloads, may let them down. Frankie Valli, a re-entry? Did it make the top 50 before now, Tom? Never a hit in 1968.

It charted (in the OCC chart) at #32 in 2007 Dave

Thanks for checking eightiespopkid. I have the original 7" by the way - worth £25 now :D

As a bit of an 80s pop kid myself it's a great retro, thanks Dave. Always found it weird that Nina's German version, 99 Luftballons, was the hit version in America...

Has Pete still got fans? Or do we all think he is a messed up unfortunate, that needs help?

YES he still has his fans (well, only Chris, Nicky, Cass and me on the whole forum it seems :()

Bit of a legend tbf! I'll definitely be buying Grace/Wastelands

Thanks for the info as ever, Dave!

if take that are 13 for the single then why on here are they number 3?

That's just for the physicals ;)

#13 is downloads/ physicals combined, which is what counts in the end, as it will be the official chart position.

thanks :) but what does physicals meen?

Well, CDs, vinyl memory sticks... That sort of thing. Actual copies of the song you can hold in your hands :) In Up All Night's case, just CD singles I think.

(God I feel old...)

Cheers! I must have been out that week! Still think that the brilliant UK version, by Timebox is best though.

...Radio One, SIMON BATES stated "We do not intend playing this record, due to the nature of the lyric".

MADONNA had a hit, after flopping with the original release of "Borderline".

didn't realise SB refused to play the Frankie single....thought it was Mike Read?

'Holiday' was first hit for Madonna, following the non hits 'Everybody' and 'Lucky Star'; which was then re-released after the success of 'Holiday'

'Borderline' was considered a "flop" in 84 (#56) but was actually released after the re-issued 'LS'

'Borderline' was considered a "flop" in 84 (#56) but was actually released after the re-issued 'LS'

It was Mike Read that started the ball rolling. SB played the record when it entered the top 40 at 35. Then after the Mike Read thing, the BBC then refused to play it. The single then smashed up from 35 to 6. The statement SB gave was the usual one, that the BBC gave. Which was first stated with Max Romeo`s "Wet Dream" in 1969. Closely followed by Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin`s "Je`taime Moi Non Plus"...which were both in the chart together for a few weeks in 1969. Meaning that only 18 records were played in "Pick Of The Pops", for a few weeks!

"Relax" on it`s own was not played again, until a New Year "Top Of The Pops" special. Subsequently, the record did then get played on Jimmy Savile`s "Old Record Club`s Triple Top Ten Show" in 1986. Which was strange at the time, because usually if a record had been banned, Jimmy still would not play it. As he still did with Serge and Jane, and the Sex Pistols banned couple of records! Not forgetting Judge Dread, of course! Though he did play Donna Summer`s "Love To Love You Baby", which was always missed out on the Top Twenty Show with Tom Browne.

I can't believe they banned Love To Love You Baby! It was very tame compared to Je T'aime or Relax (though I never saw the problem with that one so much, I think it was the gay connotation more than anything).
