with the licensing trade in freefall since this ridiculous government's draconian smoking ban.... why don't they just finish the job and close the pubs that remain? Surely it's kinder than deliberately running them to ground in this way.

I always remember the day of the smoking ban in Wales, April 1st of all days, and the Welsh news... an interviewer talking to a Welsh MP who voted in favour of the ban...

"Don't you think the government should be looking at maybe curbing alcohol.... something that causes more problems for more people than smoking"....

The answer...

"Well...first things first".

Enough said, really.

Yeah, cos Prohibition was real success in the US wasn't it....?

I find pubs to be ghastly places, I can't remember the last time I was in a pub and got served a beer how i like it, with a nice bit of froth/head, usually the beer is flat too, I find them especially in London to be over priced, I find pubs in general to be tacky soul less places and would not be sorry to see more go to the wall

I much prefer the continental street cafe set up like you get in places like Holland,Belgium, parts of France where you sit out in the streets cafe style and have a few beers, far better than ghastly pubs

Well, it's the people who make the atmosphere in any environment. The pub can be as grotty as hell, but given the right mix of people you can have a great time. My local has recently come under new management and they're in the process of doing some decent renovations.

I play for a darts team and a pool team and spend 3-4 nights a week in a pub and I really enjoy the atmosphere. I'm not too fussy about my beer either - sure, I enjoy going to beer festivals and trawling through the kegs on offer until I find something appealing, but I'm just as happy down my local supping down a few pints of John Smiths (other brands of ale are available! :P ).

I'm not normally a pub fan either. I prefer a club, as i am a dance as opposed to a sit down and drink kinda guy, but there is a great pub just down the road from my uni back home. In fact it'll be just across the road from my new flat

If anyone is ever in Dundee, Templelane is rather epic. [although it is a cocktail bar......]

That's exactly what I've already pointed out, if they mess around with the "alcohol system" (couldn't think of a word for it  ) in any extreme way, i.e. crazy prices to the banning of alcohol, then there will be hell up.

Great idea with so many pubs closing already.

Well, they're saying that it wouldn't actually affect the prices in pubs, it's basically to stop the supermarkets from doing offers like "10 cans for £5" deals.... Which I agree can certainly exacerbate the problems of binge drinking....
