Craig's views are a little extreme I have to say, even though I'd kind of agree with them. I'd suggest that any migrants who can't speak the language need to regularly proove that they're learning it to at least a standard where they can have a general conversation with someone who English is their first language.

I agree with what he is saying, although I do feel that if it was a white man saying it, it would be a completely different story. I think that if people to England, from Poland or wherever they should at least make an effort to learn the language. But it doesn't mean that most of them don't, and the same applies to people from England going to a foreign country, but I have to say foreign countries are just as bad. My dad is Spanish, he can speak Spanish really well, however he was brought up and raised in England so he has an English accent and he says whenever he talks in Spanish like when we went to Spain, they sometimes send wrong stuff etc even when it's right.

 

And it's the same for my Aunt she says that they laugh at her because she speaks Spanish in an English Accent, even though she spent seven of her years in Spain, and had to learn English from scratch. I think those who work in restaurants in foreign countries should understand the effort that is being made, because in most cases many English don't bother and ask in English. And yet 'we' go and criticize.

English is the worlds premier language though, everyone should learn it as opposed to everyone being under obligation to know foreign languages, English is the recognised global business language, it is the official language of the aviation industry all aviation is conducted in English and so on, it is the most important language in the world to know

 

While the typical Englishman on the Costa Del Sol only knows the words "oi Pedro, San Miguel" that does not give other people the right to come to England and not learn the language, 2 wrongs don't make a right

I never said that they shouldn't learn the language when they come to along, I said it clearly that I agree with what the man said. But don't you think that is why many children do not learn a language? Because of it being the most spoken language, etc.

 

I agree with the choices of language, I really do. At my high school we only had French and German as an option, and lets be honest I don't think German is that important, mainly because I don't. While I feel French is, but yes Mandarin, etc should be taught or even given an option. India, China and Japan have a lot of influence over the business world, and if we can't communicate with them we don't have much luck.

 

But most of these languages are tend to be taught more in private schools.

I would agree with that... I think Urdu and Bengali should have been taught for years as an option... Especially given the fact that I grew up around lots of asian kids who were more or less bilingual.... What the hell was the point in me being taught French or German, when I couldn't even speak the language that my mates and neighbours spoke.. I never knew any French or German kids growing up, I dont work with any French or German people, but I sure as hell grew up with and worked with a lot of Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi folks.....

 

Cantonese/Mandarin is another important language also... But, dont forget about Spanish... After English, Spanish is probably the most widely disseminated Euro language, if you went to the US, you'd hear Spanish spoken, a lot.....

As for the expats in Spain learning Spanish while they should it is not as extreme as 90% of bars and restaurants on the Costa Del Sol are "Jim's Pub" "Betty's Cafe" "Paddy O Murphy's Irish Bar" and so on, the Costa Del Sol is effectively Little England so there is less need for Spanish to be learned as there is for English to be known here

 

That's a seriously WEAK excuse for their blatant ignorance Craig, so I guess by those standards, the Chinese folks in Chinatown shouldn't bother to speak English then (even though the vast majority do so), because, let's face it, Chinatown is very much a self-enclosed, self-sufficient community who keep to themselves, work extremely hard and pretty much harm NO ONE; and certainly has more history, heritage and culture to it than a bunch of British laaaaageerrrrr louts who moved out to Spain in the 80s.... The expats in Spain are every bit as guilty of the things you are accusing immigrants here of doing - ie, not attempting to learn the language or customs, not integrating into their adoptive culture, so sorry man, I see absolutely no difference. I've seen how these people act and the total disrespect they show for the Spanish people, they act FAR WORSE than any immigrant group you care to mention in the UK imo..... People fleeing chaos, war and persecution from countries such as Iran, Congo, Somalia (where children have been basically kidnapped off the streets and forced to be child soldiers, you just cannot even imagine the brutalities they've been subjected to), Burma, Sudan, Indonesia, etc, are not exactly what I would call "economic migrants" for the most part... You've clearly never, ever even spoken to people from any of these countries.... Until you have this level of understanding, then I feel you have absolutely no right whatsoever to comment on the actual motivations of many of these people.....

I think one of the conditions from someone from outside of the UK being allowed to come and live here is that they take an English test at Heathrow/Gatwick/detention centre or whatever and if they don't pass then they are shoved on the next plane back,

The difference is though with those countries that you listed you have to have a job to go to before being allowed to settle in the country, the Western expats are hired by the local companies (oil, gas, hospitals etc etc) before they arrive in the country so less important, most of those coming to this country are coming without a job and therefore need to have a grasp of the language if they are going to make a meaningful contribution to society

I dont know a single Bangladeshi person who cant speak English... It's pretty much taught in Bangladeshi schools practically from primary onwards.... Why the fukk do you think all these bloody call centres relocated out there....? They DIDN'T got to Africa, the DIDN'T go to Russia or Poland, they went to India or Bangladesh, both countries with a very wide dissemination of English speaking, so Bangladeshis aren't really the problem.... You seem to think that just because Bangladeshi folks speak Bengali to each other in private conversations that this somehow means that they dont have knowledge of English, you are very, very wrong in that assumption..... Frankly, I find it a lot less hard work to understand my Bangladeshi colleagues when they speak English, than I do some fukkin' chav from North London or Glasgow who can barely bloody speak English properly even though they were born here and went through the BRITISH education system, I mean, what are we saying here, that schools in Bangladesh are teaching their kids English better than we are teaching OURS.....? Is that actually what we're saying....?

 

Howabout we give our OWN compulsory bloody elocution and grammar lessons before we start slagging of anyone else.....

 

As for Somalis - well, if you actually bothered to read one of my earlier posts, then you MAY have just picked up on the FACT that young kids are being force into fighting in the army or paramilitaries by psychotic armed gangs.... If they dont do what they're told, they're brutalised, tortured and killed.. As soon as these poor buggers can escape from that situation, what the fukk do you expect them to do...? And, even when they've escaped get here, it can be incredibly difficult for them to actually adjust to normal life, because they are very likely to be suffering from POST TRAUMATIC STRESS from being child soldiers.....
