02 03 NOW THAT`S WHAT I CALL COMEDY

03 01 HEROES SERIES 2

04 NE DEVIL`S WHORE

Here`s a funny story (or maybe not). Now, when I was at school (thousands of years ago), I was in the same class of a girl, whose surname was Hoare (prounounced Whore, yeah)...now she was obviously very intelligent because she knew what a Whore was. I didn`t (very innocent in those days). Anyway she was rather crafty because she put it about (no not that way)! No, she told everyone that her name was pronounced Hall. Very easy thing to believe...I don`t think! :teresa:

RONAN smashes the chart apart, this week on the Mothering Sunday theme, as LIONEL RICHIE comes to the fore. He has to albums in the top 40...the new solo one at 20, and the Definitive Lionel And The Commodores at 34. Give a thought to Mr Showman (Barry Manilow), who creeps in at 35 with "The Greatest Songs Of The 80s". Now, I would appreciate someone`s help here...In December 1982, Barry release his version of "I`m Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter". I can`t find that on any CD. It never gets played anywhere...So, if you know a CD that has it on, please let me know...

We flashback now...to March 1990. As last week we had a look at the top tv, for our chosen month (and it was very popular)...We will start with the top tv, for March 1990:

01 CORONATION STREET 20.40M

02 NEIGHBOURS 18.70*

03 EASTENDERS 18.60*

04 THIS IS YOUR LIFE 14.50M

05 STRIKE IT LUCKY 13.60M

06 THE BILL 13.30M

07 SURPRISE SURPRISE 13.20M

08 HOME AND AWAY 13.00*

09 THE COOK REPORT 12.40M

10 INSPECTOR MORSE 12.00M

11 ANTIQUES ROADSHOW 11.80M

12 BRUSH STROKES 11.40M

13 THE TWO OF US 11.40M

14 THE LITTLE AND LARGE SHOW 11.20M

15 A QUESTION OF SPORT 10.80M

16 YOU BET 10.70M

17 NO JOB FOR A LADY 10.70M

18 JAWS 10.60M

19 EL CID 10.60M

20 BERGERAC 10.60M

Still big ratings in 1990. *Means that the soaps in question (only noted are the top episode) had repeat showings i.e. Neighbours (1.30/5.35), Home And Away (12.30/5.15), Eastenders (Tues, and Thurs were repeated on Sunday Afternoon)...So the figures for these are joined together. This is a con really because Neighbours single episodes only got 9m, Home And Away about 6.5m...So, really shouldn`t even be in the top 20. These 2 were only purchased by BBC/ITV because the price of American series rose, and was too expensive for British companies too buy. It can be said that the BBC, were spending most of there millions on Eastenders (which again only had single episode figures of 12m)...which would have put it down at the bottom of the top 10. While this was happening...British favourites: The Two Ronnies, Dave Allen etc...were making Australian shows, which the BBC would not buy to show in the UK. Coronation Street, on the other hand only got a repeat showing in the Northern regions...the single episodes still drew 16m...still the number one, without a repeat then! THIS IS YOUR LIFE was on it`s 3rd season with MICHAEL ASPEL...We fondly remember original host, the late EAMON ANDREWS. MICHAEL BARRYMORE was the host of STRIKE IT LUCKY...which became STRIKE IT RICH, after THAMES TV lost their franchise and the series was taken over by LWT. The shamed Michael`s real name is MICHAEL PARKER. THE BILL was doing alright in it`s Tues/Thurs 8pm showings. CILLA BLACK was joined by GORDON BURNS on Sunday nights in SURPRISE SURPRISE...Don`t sing Cilla! JOHN THAW was crime solving in Oxford as INSPECTOR MORSE. The ANTIQUES ROADSHOW pulled them in at 4.55pm on Sundays. Sitcoms (both rubbish, unfortunately) kept NICHOLAS LYNDHURST busy in THE TWO OF US, and KARL HOWLMAN in the absolutely terrible BRUSH STROKES...which ran for 5 long tiresome years! LITTLE AND LARGE...were on their last tv series, which was rather a shame as EDDIE LARGE later suffered ill health, and SYD LITTLE had other problems in his family. DAVID COLEMAN was still introducing A QUESTION OF SPORT on Tuesdays at 8pm. YOU BET was on it`s 3rd, and final series with BRUCE FORSYTH...In 1991 MATTHEW KELLY took over, as Bruce return to the BBC in late 1990 for a re-hashed GENERATION GAME. PENELOPE KEITH gave us a dire sitcom as Labour MP JEAN PRICE in NO JOB FOR A LADY on ITV (Mondays at 8pm). BBC 1 showed JAWS, as BERGERAC was in it`s 9th series with JOHN NETTLES. EL CID was ITV`s newest cop show, as ALFRED MOLINA, and JOHN BIRD played BLAKE AND BROMLEY who left Scotland Yard, to do some P.I. stuff on the Costa Del Sol. You might remember in the 3rd, and final series in 1992, ALFRED MOLINA left and AMANDA REDMAN joined the cast as Bromley`s daughter.

19 11 HEART OF STONE - CHER

20 10 JOURNEYMAN - ERIC CLAPTON

SINEAD ruled the roost in 1990, as NOW DANCE 901 kept the disco alive! Down went PHIL COLLINS. He had 13 weeks at number one. Notting Hill kept as going with those "Hillbillies". DAVID BOWIE was about to score a chart-topping album again. NIGEL KENNEDY brought us the punk meets classic sound. IRON MAIDEN kept double packages of 12" singles, released as limited edition collectors items in the album chart. The length and number of tracks excluded them from the singles chart, so they were lumped in the album chart. MICHAEL BOLTON smashed up, for a brief top ten entry. More dancing around the house, with THE RIGHT STUFF 2. PAVAROTTI cracked the chart...as we awaited the 1990 World Cup, or not! This was the first time that 2 Classical artists were in the top 10. Back up for those NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK...as the singles kept a-coming. CHRIS REA still couldn`t get off the M25! TINA TURNER was hanging in, as BARRY MANILOW went Live on Broadway...the only 2 artists, who appear in this week`s chart! JOURNEYMAN kept ERIC CLAPTON going for the God of Electric Guitar...Unfortunately Phil Collins kept Eric, from the top of the chart.

49 NE KISS THIS THING GOODBYE - DEL AMITRI

50 33 DUDE (LOOKS LIKE A LADY) - AEROSMITH

DUB BE GOOD TO ME was on it`s 3rd and final week at the top here (Lindy Layton was in Grange Hill, you know), because B52`s "LOVE SHACK" was a MRIB number one, the following week. JIVE BUNNY (thankfully) were not! CANDY FLIP revisited 1967, for a cover of the BEATLES well known hit...as the BEATLES were held off the top 23 years earlier, by ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINCK, which more or less told me that the Beatles had problems! ERASURE had that Blue...Blue Savannah Song. GURU JOSH was happy the first time round. NEW KIDS had problems with single three. Instrumental was the key with DAVID A. STEWART, who peaked at number 6 next week. THE BRITS 1990 medley, featured songs from the awards...which was music of 1989. JT gave us some MOMENTS IN SOUL and nicked certain bits from other records. Down for MICHAEL BOLTON, and INNOCENCE too. SNAP! cracked in with the highest new entry, on the way to number one for 2 weeks. Down for SINEAD covering PRINCE. INSPIRAL CARPETS gave us the brilliant THIS IS HOW IT FEELS. 49ERS sounded too much like BLACK BOX. BIG FUN were trying, and very forgetting! PRIMAL SCREAM got noisy...As TECHNOTRONIC could have been doing another take on PUMP UP THE JAM with GET UP. BROS were on their last legs, really. E-ZEE POSSE took us to the druggy/house scene. DEPECHE MODE were off a top 5 hit. GLORIA ESTEFAN went down. THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS looked promising (not to put a finer point on it)! FISH (out of MARILLION ) kept turning them out, without much success. The MISSION were the alternatives. RAM JAM were re-worked, and sounded pretty much like the 1977 original. ROD STEWART continued, as did JIMMY "POTATOHEAD" SOMERVILLE! SHAKIN`STEVENS might have done, but on this occasion did not! Fabulous STONE ROSES did though, with 2 top 40 appearances this week. WET WET WET`s offering is rather forgotten on HOLD BACK THE RIVER. ORBITAL "chimed", as ADAM ANT made a short comeback...he had been in the States, and appeared in "THE EQUALIZER" with other British star EDWARD WOODWARD...Edward, of course reall husband of MICHELLE DOTRICE of SOME MOTHERS DO `AVE EM fame. JAM TRONIK did an inferior version of Phil Collins hit. Small hits for KATE BUSH, WHITESNAKE, BELOVED, and KICKING BACK WITH TAXMAN...all songs probably not heard since 1990. Wouldn`t it be a better idea, if Radio One featured some of the 90s stuff in a different version of a Vintage Chart Programme...so it would cover that era better than that awful, boring, lowsy...need I go on?...Radio 2 Pick Of The Pops rubbish, with over voice-tracked/overrated Dale Winton! :P

Hang around, and keep an eye on these pre-orders, while a-waiting the up to minute singles charts...

) Position without downloads alone. Also without downloads alone are 38 Beyonce - If I Were A Boy, 39 Doman And Gooding, and 40 Alesha Dixon - Boy Does Nothing.

= Position on Chart Show tv

Flo Rida returns to the top, and sales 2,000 more than GaGa. Outside the 50, we find DOMAN AND GOODING at 52, AKON goes back up with RIGHT NOW at 54...It might be a little late for ROYKSOPP as his download takes a 12 inch physical into the top 60 for "Happy Up Here". JENNIFER HUDSON moves up to 55 with "If This Isn`t Love". SKEPTA gets a top 70 entry, as does ASHER ROTH...as MILEY CYRUS get`s "The Climb", further down...and then are LIONEL RICHIE (Just Go), and WHITE LIES newie too.

NOTE: The above charts are not the Official Charts. They are based on Chart Show tv`s, but with added info minus airplay, to make them the most up to date charts in Britain at this point.

A definate number one album coming for those Pet Shop Boys?...Yes! Bye Bye Ronan!

Great news! Since the single is going to flop for sure now :(

Thanks Dave

Great stuff! :D Good to see Flo Rida go back to No1, Poker Face for No1 next week PLEASE.

Oh no that K.I.G reminds me of when About You Now entered at No35 on downloads of a remix and then shot to the top when the radio edit was added. :(

I hoped Hockey would make the top 40. :(

That KIG song is just disgusting. Sounds like the evil lovechild of 50 Cent and DJ Casper :puke:

Thanks for this anyway. Still some great stuff in the chart.

Great stuff! :D Good to see Flo Rida go back to No1, Poker Face for No1 next week PLEASE.

It was the same situation with Tinchy Stryder - Take Me Back, but that didn't go to number one... we may be safe yet :)

I think we are safe too, Tom...K.I.G. on physical on Monday, but then so is Flo Rida...Poor contest either way really!

I hope Kings of Leon - Sex On Fire beats the record of Nickelback - Rockstar and Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax of 37 consecutive weeks top 40 (is that the record which still stands?)

No, I think several singles have had longer consecutive runs inside the top40 than 37 weeks, including:

Mr Acker Bilk Stranger On The Shore 1961 32-16-14-6-6-8-2-2-2-5-8-7-12-11-13-8-8-7-6-7-13-12-10-15-13-12-11-12-11-11-9-9-17-19-18-20-19-18-22-23-27-30-32-31-38- (45 weeks)

It's got another 8 weeks to go yet anyway! I don't think it will do it...

Oh no, you are telling me that Stranger On The Shore didn`t make number one! I can`t have that. It certainly was number on Pick Of The Pops (Sunday 7th Jan 1962)...Except no substitues Ethan...Guiness tried to re-write history! :o

BBC chart run was: 22-12-6-3-2=-1-2-2-3-6-8-10-11-12-10-8-10-11-11-12-17-13-14-15-15-14-13-14-11-12-12-12-16-19-17-20-21-21-26-26-27- A total of 41 weeks in the (proper) followed chart of the 60s.

Cheers Dave, I just hope that K.I.G track goes nowhere near the top 5 next week.
I would have been interesting to see how many copies Ronan could have sold this week had the shops not run out. I went to 3 different places today including HMV and they had none left at all. Amazon ran out on monday.
In December 1982, Barry release his version of "I`m Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter". I can`t find that on any CD. It never gets played anywhere...So, if you know a CD that has it on, please let me know...

Its from his 1982 album called Here Comes The Night (which was retitled I Wanna Do It With You for the UK)

It seems to be hard to find on CD though

Great commentary Dave, TV certainly was excellent in those days.

Just one correction, the following year (1991) was Little and Large last series not 1990.
