Lady GaGa defies iTunes to hold off the challenge from the car ad.

01 01 Lady GaGa Poker Face

It’s a second consecutive week in control for New Yorker Lady GaGa with the second single from her No3 debut album The Fame. Poker Face therefore ends a sequence of three consecutive one-week chart toppers: Kelly Clarkson, Flo Rida and Jenkins/West the longest such run since the fall of 2006.

The last time we had a 4-1-1-1-2+ sequence of No1’s was in the Summer of 1996 when the Fugees had 4 weeks at No1, followed by one week stints by Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightening Seeds, Fugees and Gary Barlow before The Spice Girls embarked on a extended run at the top.

If Poker Face remains at No1 next week Lady GaGa will have spent the most weeks in total at No1 in the first four months of a year since Céline Dion spent seven weeks in control in early 1995. By climbing to No1 last week in its 10th week on the chart, Poker Face took the longest time to climb to No1 since Think Twice reached No1 in its 16th week. It has now moved: 30-26-28-24-22-15-3-3-4-1-1- in 11 weeks.

NEW 02 Noisettes Don't Upset The Rhythm (Go Baby Go)

Shingai Shoniwa (vocals/bass), Dan Smith (guitars) and Jamie Morrison (drums) are London Indie rock band The Noisettes. They score their first UK top 40 hit entering spectacularly at No2 with Don't Upset The Rhythm (Go Baby Go), which is currently being used in the Mazda 2 car adverts.

The Noisettes formed in fall of 2003 and began playing around venues in the capital. They released their first EP The Noise Of The Noisettes in April 2005 and released their first studio album What’s The Time Mr Wolf in February 2007 reaching No75. The first two singles from the album IWE (Jan 2006) and Scratch Your Name (Jun 2006) failed to chart, however the third single Don’t Give Up reached No73 in November 2006 and the fourth Sister Rosetta made progress reaching No63 in January 2007. Next came a reissue of Scratch Your Name (May 2007) and The Count of Monte Christo (Sep 2007) both of which again failed to chart.

The band toured extensively around America, Europe and the UK, before coming back with the first single; the title track from their forthcoming second studio album Wild Young Hearts, due for release on 20th April 2009; which failed to chart in the first week of 2009. Don't Upset The Rhythm (Go Baby Go) finally sees the band achieve some commercial success narrowly missing out on this weeks No1.

NEW 34 White Lies Farewell To The Fairground

The White Lies are a post punk alternative band from Ealing, London. They are Harry McVeigh, Charles Cave and Jack Lawrence-Brown and met at School; under the guise Fear Of Flying they supported acts such as Lara Marling at the weekends as well as releasing two vinyl singles on a independent label: Routemaster/Round Three and Three's And Crowd/Forget-Me-Nots in 2006. In October 2007 they changed their name to the White Lies to reflect the darker nature of their material.

By February 2008 BBC Radio One DJ Zane Lowe had chosen Death as his hottest record in the world. Their first gig at Hoxton Square later that month was attended by numerous record company A&R executives which lead to them being signed to Fiction Records. Farewell To The Fairground duly matches To Lose My Life’s No34 peak today to give the band their second top40 success.

54 37 Jennifer Hudson If This Isn't Love

27-year-old Chicago born Oscar wining actress and singer-songwriter Jennifer Kate Hudson first gained eminence through America’s top rated music talent show: American Idol. Despite her obvious talent she struggled in the third series of American Idol losing her semi-final before being brought back in a wild card show by Randy Jackson. Despite rave reviews from the judges Jennifer’s Idol journey ended in the top7 week, some people blamed her early exit on power outages in her native Chicago area.

In November 2005 Jennifer won the role of Effie White in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls; also starring Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé and Eddie Murphy. Her performance received a warm critical reception and she duly won a golden globe for Best Actress In A Supporting Role (2007) and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (2006).

On 24th October 2008 the sad news broke that Jennifer’s mother, brother and nephew had been murdered; leading to her seclusion to mourn her loss; she made her first public appearance performing at the Super Bowl on the 1st February 2009.

If This Isn't Love, a download only release, is the third single from Jennifer Hudson’s No21 self titled debut album; following All Dressed In Love (No72 June 2008) and her biggest hit to date Spotlight (No11 October 2008), which spent 24 weeks in the top75. If This Isn’t Love has moved: 72-68-61-54-37- thus far.

61 40 Asher Roth I Love College

20-year-old rapper Asher Paul Roth hails from Morrisville, Pennsylvania. After leaving university to pursue a career in hip hop he linked up with Scooter Braun and Steve Rifkind; an early rap pioneer entrepreneur who helped to break The Wu Tan Clan. Asher’s material has been likened to a middle-class Eminem. I Love College is the first single from his forthcoming debut album Asleep In The Bread Aisle due out next month.

Albums

A second week at the top for Ronan Keating’s Songs For My Mother and thus equals his debut solo albums two week stint at the top in August 2000. His longest consecutive run at No1 on the album chart came as a member of Boyzone; in the summer of 1999; when By Request spent seven consecutive weeks in control. It is the first time that two successive albums (U2 and Ronan Keating) have enjoyed extended runs at the top since Abba, The Script, The Verve, Metallica and Kings Of Leon had two week runs at the top in succession between August and October 2008.

Kings Of Leon climb back up a place to No2 with Only By The Night in its 27th consecutive week within the top7 having moved 1-1-2-3-3-4-6-4-6-7-5-4-3-3-2-1-2-2-3-2-2-1-2-3-4-3-2- to date. With Poker Face holding the No1 spot on the singles listings for a second week Lady GaGa’s debut album climbs four places to No3 to match its debut position and peak 3-4-4-5-13-7-5-4-8-7-3-.

The Pet Shop Boys enter at No4 with their 10th studio album Yes. It’s their highest charting album since Bilingual also reached No4 in September 1996; their only No1 album came in October 1993 when Very entered at the top in the wake of the success of the No2 single Go West. Annie Lennox slides three places to No5 with the Annie Lennox collection 2-2-5- however after her BBC1 Sessions performance last night she may well recover lost ground in seven days forth.

Lily Allen’s It’s Not Me, It’s You rebounds ten places to No6 after a weeks hiatus from the top10 1-2-3-5-10-16-6- as she occupies the No16 and 17 slots with Not Fair and The Fear. The Prodigy reverse last weeks fall by climbing 5 places to No7 with Invaders Must Die 1-2-7-12-7- now that the Mother’s Day effect has eased.

Akon’s third studio album Freedom explodes 24-8- surpassing the No18 peak it set a fortnight ago 31-38-36-36-31-21-23-24-24-30-36-40-42-23-18-24-8-. U2’s former No1 album No Line On The Horizon eases three places to No9 1-1-6-9- and finally Kelly Clarkson’s No3 All I Ever Wanted slides two places to No10 3-8-10-.

Next Week

On the singles chart next weeks release activity is rather slow with just digital releases from: Lady Sovereign and Just Jack to look out for. Out physically today/tomorrow are singles from: Doves and Jack Peñate. One must suspect Lady GaGa is perfectly poise to score a third consecutive week control with Poker Face.

On the albums front can Ronan Keating hold out against Kings Of Leon for a third week at No1, which would be a solo best for him? Metro Station and Flo Rida will also be looking to make an sizeable impact in 7 days time!

Great read as always, seeing the single release schedule for the next few weeks, Lady GaGa might just outdo her previous hit Just Dance, and could muster another 3 to 5 weeks at #1 when the physical is released on the 13th April, that be a hell of a chart run to die for.

Yeah the release schedule is looking really slack at the moment. It will depend on how well her sales hold up as I suspect Calvin Harris will sell 40k with I'm Not Alone so 3-6 weeks is likely.
