April 14, 200916 yr Author Rob, Judge Jules is the very lowest common denominator in DJs - his own miserable output will show that.... him and his hilarious Barbie-doll missus screeching over cheesy fairground backing tracks. And his DJ sets... just awful. I saw the guy a few times in the 90s (whilst he was sharing the bill with much better DJs) and each time he had an unnerving knack of clearing the floor of the more experienced, hardened clubbers and filling it with the kiddie raver glo-stick brigade. He's always been regarded with a grimace in clubland...... apart from by the chart-heads. And Ibiza...belive me, Rob.... there's only been one club wirth even looking at in Ibiza since 91 and that was DC10...and that's closed down last year. The rest of the clubs cater for the very people Judge Jules plays for..... pissed up Brits who've bought a Misery of Sound compilation along the line and who've popped a few pills in a suburban Yates's wine lodge. If you're looking for great dance music and clubbers who are switched on about what they listen to, I'd say Ibiza is the last place to go. Some of the worst clubs I've ever been to were in Ibiza... Space being the absolute worst of the lot.... totally hideous. I agree about OT Quartet's 'Hold That Sucker Down' - but that was first released in 1994. For lovely 'emotional' trance from 95... check Baby Doc's 'Dance of the Seven Veils' here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AYQTNY64Lc...feature=related Luxor's 'Superstitious' was one of the first proper 'euphoric' tracks..... check this from about 2.15 in... great stuff. But surely THE most epic trance record ever was the superb Friends Lovers and Family's beautiful 'Tribute'... stunning... from 1995... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iz0GT8QoYs0 now ive had time to listen to these tracks, i can see where youre coming from m8, plus the wiki entry for trance highlights the way in which the genre grew and evolved. obviously your taste was for the earlier sounds, of which these 3 examples are very good, but that doesnt exclude 'tilt', 'solar stone' , etc from the genre, like i previously said 'hey jude' isnt any the less a beatles track just because it doesnt sound like 'she loves you' ... wiki explains that 'uplifting trance' (euphoric) became popular in the mid-late 90's and sorry old bean but from what ive heard i love it! :P the problem is with 'early' trance is that like 'hold that sucker down' and the 3 tracks youve posted, it was club material only. it didnt impact the charts so its invisible to me looking back (remember that at one time i wouldnt touch dance with a barge pole!, so my interest is retrospect). theres no 'right' or 'wrong' here, its all down to personal taste, maybe if id been in the clubs in the early/mid 90's my knowlege would undoubtedly be far greater and id have found tracks that i like. but i wasnt, and the purpose of this excercise was to discover MY chart year preferances so the listing above reflects that. plus remember that im a listener, not a dancer!
April 16, 200916 yr I am not doing this because I want to re-open the whole 1999 was $h!t thing again but I was narked by the fact that Rob had 1990 as his least favourite year in music. Now I have always listened more to albums and it seemed to make sense to do a comparison of the albums I liked from 90 and 99 just to see. Here is my 1999 list (Most of them did chart in the Top 40 but seeing as I included my faves in 1990 that did not chart then I did the same here): The Black Crowes - Right By Your Side Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs 3 Colours Red - Revolt Underworld - Beaucoup Fish Kula Shaker - Peasants, Pigs and Astronauts Blur - 13 David Sylvian - Dead bees on a Cake Echo and the Bunnymen - What are You Going to Do With Your Life? Catatonia - Equally Cursed and Blessed Ultrasound - Everything Picture Suede - Head Music Cast - Magic Hours Gay Dad - Leisure Noise Super Furry Animals - Guerrilla Chemical Brothers - Surrender Death in Vegas - Contino Sessions Leftfield - Rhythm and Stealth Supergrass - Supergrass Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning David Bowie - Hours Foo Fighters - There Is Nothing Left to Lose Ian Brown - Golden Greats Smog - Knock Knock Buckcherry - Buckcherry The Donnas - Get Skintight Beck - Midnight Vultures A fairly poor year without that many brilliant albums that I regularly revist now.

April 16, 200916 yr Author but I was narked by the fact that Rob had 1990 as his least favourite year in music. buy WHY? i find it bewhildering that you should think that! so we dont agree, we have different requirements, tastes in music.... get over it! i hated 1990 which was MY worst ever year, i rated 1999 higher because i liked more... big deal! but in my charts it was the 60's that clearly ruled...
April 16, 200916 yr Author ....... i might have generally hated the music from 1990, but looky here at what ive found... the original of 'age of love'... jqnR3yXOFmY i liked that! however, i still prefer this mix Ct_5jJV80dw
April 16, 200916 yr Author cant see owt 'wrong' with this either! solar stone - seven cities R9s-hcVOP1I&feature=related and certainly not this! veracocha - carte blanche _6KFq8s2fgg&feature=related binary finary 1999 6K12SGBWu8w&feature=related blank and jones - cream Jrb5h1Es_04
April 20, 200916 yr All great tracks Rob. Even if no one else thinks the same. Personally, I think the upshot here is the face that euphoric trance (I'm gonna have to use that euphoric prefix now to keep everyone moderately happy) was never considered to be "cool" due to it's ubiquous mass appeal.
April 21, 200916 yr Author All great tracks Rob. Even if no one else thinks the same. Personally, I think the upshot here is the face that euphoric trance (I'm gonna have to use that euphoric prefix now to keep everyone moderately happy) was never considered to be "cool" due to it's ubiquous mass appeal. fashionable music though has always had its detractors, no matter which genre... merseybeat, psychodelia, glam, punk, ska, now romantic etc... i think trance or euphoric trance <_< got judged by people who dance has little appeal, by the likes of alice dee jay, darude, atb, etc which of course arnt trance. every genre had its 'pop' end of the spectrum, after all you wouldnt judge punk as a genre by listening to the likes of 'the dickies'.. the percieved 'ibeefa' scene of drunken yobs singing 'here we go' and sharon n tracey dancing around their handbags waving glo-sticks aint what trance was ever about.

April 30, 200916 yr Rob.... you're a gem! Agnelli + Nelson "Everyday" is my favorite trance track of all time! Spine-tingling gorgeousness, puts me back to when I was a wee 15 year old skinny teen at Radio 1's summer gig in Manchester 1999 and Judge Jules dropped this beauty! Ooooh amazing I tell yer!
May 1, 200916 yr Author Rob.... you're a gem! Agnelli + Nelson "Everyday" is my favorite trance track of all time! Spine-tingling gorgeousness, puts me back to when I was a wee 15 year old skinny teen at Radio 1's summer gig in Manchester 1999 and Judge Jules dropped this beauty! Ooooh amazing I tell yer! thanks m8... i agree it IS a superb trance track, im enjoying discovering new gems... and by all accounts trance (uplifting trance <_< ) certainly peaked in 1999, according to my research anyway. seems that the genre continued to evolve as the sub genres became more popular into this decade as 'original' (russ's) trance and anthemic, uplifting trance declined. psytrance, dark trance seem to be the popular (albeit underground) genres nowdays.
May 1, 200916 yr As I've said before, 1999 is my favourite year for music of all time. As a ten year old, it had everything for me, Steps, S Club, the Cartoons, I would watch music channels religiously and enjoy every single song. Then when I became a teenager and discovered trance music, I looked back at the year and found all the Ferry Corsten/etc stuff that I missed the first time around. I won't get into the debate of what is and isn't trance because I think I'm too young for it (damn those people who were old enough to remember the early 90s raving days while I was still in nappies!!), but, certainly for me, System F's Out of the Blue is one of my favourite tracks of all time. Add Gouryella's 'Gouryella' to this and they make an awesome duo. I know everyone says music isn't as good as it used to be, but I think for me the golden years of dance music came to an end around the summer of 2003, when trance petered out. There's been a few fantastic songs since then but the majority of my favourites are before then, and mostly tracks from 1999!
May 1, 200916 yr Author . There's been a few fantastic songs since then but the majority of my favourites are before then, and mostly tracks from 1999! which supports the question posed in the header... and indeed the closer i look the more it seems that trance was at its zenith in 99.
May 2, 200916 yr I have to comment on the previous page's comments by ScottyEm.... so... are you saying that to be a fan of dance music you need to be 18? If so, that's the most laughable pile of old dog turd I've ever read on here. In fact, I'd say the case is the other way - ignore the kids and their naff and silly fads..... and listen and learn from the older generation... as I always did with music. And continue to. Plus...I'd check through the lists of the greatest DJs around right now.... hardly a single one of them is under 30.... with many in their late 30s to early 40s.
May 2, 200916 yr and indeed the closer i look the more it seems that trance was at its zenith in 99. Only in commercial terms.... Creatively, it was dead and had turned into something completely simplistic..... The Dark Trance nowadays of the likes of Infected Mushroom has definitely improved matters though.....

Scottyem's comments are just typical of the arrogance of youth that frankly doesn't know any better..... It would be a bit like me during my teenage 80s Thrash Metal phase going up to an old skool rocker and saying, "hey, grand-dad, you dont know what REAL Metal is, only us kids do....".....
