Still only paper talk, but the papers seem to think the album will be released on August 24th 2009 which is the mMonday before Reading and Leeds festival. It would make sense, but it might just be a case of journos putting two and two together? Who knows really. Two different papers have run the story, but I definitely wouldn't take word of this until something offical comes from either NME, a blog or the offical forums.

Still, its news, albeit unconfirmed news.

I really don't think its likely to come any sooner than early August now. There was an article in a French magazine that the album was due out in October, but I think that would be a really bad time to release. Lead single for middle of August and album for end of August means there's momentum and hype for Reading and Leeds, and 2nd single can be released October/November time in order to gain extra sales hopefully.

DiS shared a few words with Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders yesterday in relation to Sheffield's new Tramlines festival (think: Dot To Dot or Live At Leeds, only free) which takes place between July 24th-26th. More news on that coming shortly, but while we were there we asked him a few questions about the band's third record - recorded partly with Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme.

Here's what he had to say about the eagerly anticipated release...

Tell us about the third Arctic Monkeys album - is it all finished now?

It's all recorded now, yeah. We're about halfway through mixing it at the moment. I'm not sure about a release date, it'll probably be sometime in August before Leeds and Reading. Nothing's definite, though, it all depends on when we do the artwork and pick a title. And we've not finalised the tracklisting yet, we're mixing quite a few and then narrowing it down - so it also depends on how long we take doing that. We'll probably do it in the next week or so, sort it all out.

You did some sessions at Josh Homme's studio, how much of that stuff has made it onto the album?

It's looking like being half that, and half with James Ford. It works together, though, it's not like a double sided thing. It seems to sit together quite well, you can't tell what was done where.

How was working with Josh? He's been a fan of yours for a while...

We were all massive [Queens Of The Stone Age] fans before we were even a band, and to work with someone like that is just amazing. He's produced a lot of their stuff, and nothing's a chore for him - like if you do a song four times and then want to change a drum, he'll do it. He sees how important things like that are, and he knows about good sounds, too.

He's reputed to be something of a fiery figure, did you experience any of that?

Not really, no. He always had an authority over us, in a way, but he never got angry with us or anything. He's a really nice guy, really funny as well.

In terms of the sound of the record, have you pursued the heavier direction of the second album or gone on a different tangent?

Bits of it are in [Favourite Worst Nightmare's] direction, but there's some quite melodic things as well. It's not, like a 'heavy' album, though there are elements of that. I don't want to give anything away because we haven't decided on the tracklisting yet, but the songs we've been playing live recently, like 'Crying Lightning' and 'Dangerous Animals', I reckon they'll all make it on there.

Didn't expect so much of the Josh Homme stuff to be on there! I'm proper excited for it, it has been such a great year for albums so far a new Arctics album would make it perfect. :D

Sounds so amazing seriously. I'm loving the fact they're not going to go really heavy too. For me FWN was a great album and I loved the direction of the sound, so if they're continuing that sound in a way then it should be really good. I think we'll be able to tell the difference quite a bit between the James Ford and Josh Homme produced tracks though.

^ Same. Absolutely loved FWN, so I'm pleased some of it's in that 'direction'.

Tbh if anything, August is sooner that I thought it would be. I don't mind waiting a few months, it's already been about two years!

Can't wait for Monday now though, so it'll all be confirmed. :D Proper excited for this now though, it'll be great to hear some new material.

I really want the first single to be a song in the veins of 'Brianstorm', that was such a brilliant lead.

This probably doesn't deserve its own thread so I thought I'd post it here...

Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner has revealed how the Sheffield band's forthcoming third album was almost scuppered – because his lyrics book was stolen.

Singer/guitarist Turner told NME.COM that the book he kept all his works-in-progress in was nicked last year, so he had to start from scratch.

"I got my bag robbed six months ago, I lost this notebook," he said. "I lost loads. [it was in]this brown book with a picture of a fox on it."

However, Turner explained that he used the opportunity to get to work on some fresh lyrical ideas.

"I went the morning after and brought a couple of Moleskines and sat around for a couple of hours trying to remember it all," he said. "But I found the whole process made me write more things, complete things that I wouldn't have otherwise."

Arctic Monkeys are set to release the new album this summer. See next week's issue of NME, out May 20, for an exclusive cover feature with the band.

Well in a way I think that sort of explains the delay for the album, as they always said they wanted to keep gaps between albums as short as possible. But after the Calvin Harris incident about him 'losing' his material, maybe they just conjured up this in order to have more time on the record?! Who knows. @D
half Josh Homme produced :o im most excited about hearing Josh Homme produced tracks tbh, this is gonna be a dark album, it will be awesome.

Looks like i've been informed wrong...

Maybe there might be some announcement on Zane Lowe but i'm not holding my breath.

More than the other two albums then...let's just hope it's as good as the other two as well!

Hopefully we'll be able to hear the other 11 tracks somehow, whether through them being b-sides or leaks.

Gah I can't wait to hear the first single! :(

I think a lot of them will be heard through B-sides most definitely.

They've got a keyboard player to join the band for live shows, so there's definitely going to be more keys in the album (yess!) and hopefully this means they'll be more likely to play 505 live.

I'm pretty much 99% sure the album is coming out August, so lead single shall probably be floating about within the next month or so. I get the feeling they're gonna offer the single as a free download however.

In a way i'm worried about this album - certainly of late a lot of indie bands have seen their sales decline if they churn out the same material. I'm not sure what's going to happen with the Arctic Monkeys though, in an ideal world it will hopefully perform as well as Favourite Worst Nightmare did.

I still think it'll still perform fairly well (hopefully like FWN) - Arctic Monkeys have always been the sort of 'leader of the pack' as far as indie bands in recent years go and I think they'll still have a lot of fans who want to hear new material. That's what I hope anyway.

I'm sure it'll have pretty big first week sales, I suppose it just depends on how big the 1st and 2nd singles will be as to whether the album will be a big seller overall or not...

Arctic Monkeys going 'full on Black Sabbath' for new albumArctic Monkeys have explained that their forthcoming new album will be "full on" to the extent that some parts are influenced by Black Sabbath.

Frontman Alex Turner told NME.COM that the band started work on the album last summer, using their trip to the Latitude festival for inspiration.

"We went to Latitude, ripped it up, wrote on our faces and eventually wrote some songs," he said. "We spent the first day there on the most complicated riff you've ever heard.

"It goes round in seven-and-a-half-time. We used it in the end, it's on an intro. It was like [black] Sabbath."

The band also confirmed that they plan to release the album before their headline performances at the Reading And Leeds Festivals in August.

To read an exclusive cover feature with Arctic Monkeys, featuring in-the-studio photographs from their album sessions in New York, see the new issue of NME, out now.
