May 12, 200916 yr 1 Dexy's Midnight Runners - Geno - awesome  Why does no-one play this anymore, and only the god-awful Come On Eileen? :puke2: 3 Blondie - Call Me - Giorgio Moroder + Debbie Harry = genius :D 4 Johnny Logan - What's Another Year - Eurovision... not the best, but OK :) 10 The Detroit Spinners -Working My Way Back To You / Forgive Me Girl - superb disco 12 Dr Hook - Sexy Eyes - better than the sum of it's parts 16 Leon Haywood - Don't Push It, Don't Force It - funky (and really rude :kink: ) 18 The Nolans - Don't Make Waves - one hit wonders? Pah! :P 20 Madness - Night Boat to Cairo (Work Rest And Play) (EP) - meh, they did better 22 Jimmy Ruffin - Hold On To My Love - good, but no What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted... 24 Liquid Gold - Dance Yourself Dizzy - superb disco again 26 Barbara Dickson - January February - BIG soft spot for this  27 Kate Bush - Breathing - not anything like her best, but fine :) 29 The Beat - Mirror In The Bathroom - pretty good. OT but anyone remember I Am The Beat by The Look? Found the original 7" yesterday, amazing song 32 The Lambrettas - Poison Ivy - prefer the Coasters original, though I am a bit of a wannabe mod :heehee: 34 The Average White Band - Let's Go Round Again - more damn fine disco  37 New Musik - This World Of Water - AMAZING  Tony Mansfield = genius. Anyone ever hear his work with Yukihiro Takahashi? 39 Michael Jackson - She's Out Of My Life - sweet, but no Don't Stop Till You Get Enough :kink:
May 12, 200916 yr Author 1 Dexy's Midnight Runners - Geno - awesome  Why does no-one play this anymore, and only the god-awful Come On Eileen? :puke2: ahhh at last we agree on something! :) 27 Kate Bush - Breathing - not anything like her best, but fine :)but not on this...lol..reckon it was one of her best 29 The Beat - Mirror In The Bathroom - pretty good. OT but anyone remember I Am The Beat by The Look? Found the original 7" yesterday, amazing song damn fine disco  yep, it finishes on a 'cut' grove, so it repeats itself ad ininitum. good track
May 12, 200916 yr 1 Dexy's Midnight Runners - Geno............... excellent song, a worthy number one 2 Paul McCartney - Coming Up..................... the live version on the B side topped the US charts, not that good but apparently this was the song that spurred John Lennon into make a return to the studio 3 Blondie - Call Me........................ didn't really care a great deal for this and by now they were past their peak 4 Johnny Logan - What's Another Year............................ awful Euro tripe 5 David Essex - Silver Dream Machine............................ bland 6 Sky - Toccata.......................... quite liked this, sounds good when blasting out of the speakers 7 UB40 - King / Food For Thought .................................. UB40 were once a great band and this was very good 8 Rodney Franklin - The Groove .................................... the song that started the brief dance craze of "The Freeze". Not a bad song 9 The Undertones - My Perfect Cousin ........................... good song though the follow up, Wednesday Week, was far better 10 The Detroit Spinners -Working My Way Back To You / Forgive Me Girl ........................ I actually bought this. Shame on me! 11 Bobby Thurston - Check Out The Groove ............................ OK disco tune 12 Dr Hook - Sexy Eyes ......................................... awful 13 Motorhead - Golden Years (EP) ........................... poor 14 The Pretenders - Talk Of The Town ..................... excellent guitar work and a good song that was overshadowed by Brass In Pocket 15 Narada Michael Walden - I Shoulda Loved Ya ....... excellent bass and the song itself was OK 16 Leon Haywood - Don't Push It, Don't Force It ....... boring disco song 17 Hot Chocolate - No Doubt About It ...................... loved this song, their best for a while 18 The Nolans - Don't Make Waves ......................... awful 19 Sad Cafe - My Oh My ............................ OK, nothing special 20 Madness - Night Boat to Cairo (Work Rest And Play) (EP) ................... excellent EP and a great title track! 21 Saxon - Wheels Of Steel ............................... I bought the follow up, 747 (Strangers In the Night) but this was just boring 22 Jimmy Ruffin - Hold On To My Love ................ still gets play on the local oldies station, a bit boring to me 23 Cockney Rejects - The Greatest Cockney Rip Off ....................... plastic punks and a poor song. The follow up was the West Ham United theme song! 24 Liquid Gold - Dance Yourself Dizzy .................... Liquid Gold and Kelly Marie should be incinerated for the rubbish they produced in 1980. This song was sampled on Synth & Strings by Yomanda in 1999. 25 Whitesnake - Fool For Your Loving .................... bland adult rock 26 Barbara Dickson - January February ................. bland adult pop 27 Kate Bush - Breathing ...................................... very unique song that I didn't really like at the time but now love 28 BA Robertson - Kool In The Kaftan .................... not very good 29 The Beat - Mirror In The Bathroom .................... excellent song 30 The Ruts - Staring At The Rude Boys ................. another excellent song 31 Selecter - Missing Words .................................. and another! 32 The Lambrettas - Poison Ivy ............................. the "mod" revival of 1979 and 1980 was now fizzling out but these were just having their first hit. Had one more top 20 hit, and a near top 40 miss called Page 3 which earned them an injunction from The Sun, thus forcing them to change its title to Another Day (Another Girl). The lead singer died last year from cancer aged only 50. 33 Bad Manners - Ne-Ne-Na-Na-Na-Na-Nu-Nu ......... fun at the time and had a very strange chart run 64-55-62-49-34-39-38-36-36-28-33-29-33-39-OUT 34 The Average White Band - Let's Go Round Again ............. slightly catchy though ultimately boring 35 The Cure - A Forest................ excellent song 36 Smokie -Take Good Care Of My Baby .................... they were getting desperate for a hit by now and this was their last until the Chubby Brown disaster in 1995 37 New Musik - This World Of Water ................... I had this single, quite good though not their best 38 Mystic Merlin - Just Can't Give You Up ............ dreamy, jazzy, soulful song that still gets plays on the vintage soul shows on radio 39 Michael Jackson - She's Out Of My Life ........... OK song 40 Bodysnatchers - Let's Do Rock Steady .......... had this, as I did all the 2 Tone records at the time. But 2 Tone, Specials aside, were just about over as a big thing. This group soon split with most of the band going on to form the Belle Stars

May 13, 200916 yr Saxon - Wheels Of Steel! What a tune that is, such a classic riff. That's when Saxon were relevant at that time. :D Shame they don't get any success anymore. :(
May 13, 200916 yr It's a real shame that sort of music rarely breaks the mainstream these days. Saxon actually came out with a new album in January and it's a real cracker! Definitely recommend it if you like their older work.

May 14, 200916 yr kate bushs take on impending nuclear war (seemed a distinct posibility in '80, cruise missiles etc) 9n2VSe_lja4 Just downloaded a pirate copy of a DVD of The Whole Story (Yes I own the original video but I can't convert from VHS) and it is still so good.
May 15, 200916 yr Author Thanks Rob No don't remember any of them. Don't like them much either! Except Geno of course which is pure class. Although I don't go much on the rest of Searching for The Young Soul Rebels. Burn It Down is good though. 'burn it down' was their first hit earlier in 80, the re-titled 'dance stance'. well i disagree, i rate 'searching for the young soul rebels' throughout. imho not a bad track.

May 19, 200916 yr Author What a fantastically diverse Top 40. Looking at this chart really does make me feel sorry for today's teenagers. absolutely, and it was original too , ok often a contemporary take on an original style, but acts like dexys, madness, etc made the style their own, adding to the genre. todays youth seem to be 'indie by numbers'... get the look, get the sound...thats it! but they lack sincerity. kevin rowland once said that he threw a load of stax soul records down infront of his mates and said ' i want to do music like this'... in fact as many 60's artists did upon hearing rock n roll from the states, wanting to play rock n roll and blues. nowdays they seem to want to do it for fame and money more, far more then the sheer enjoyment of making interesting music.
