They're not under the Good Cover's section, are they?

Of course they are!! Kellys version of Up To The Mountain is the best  Pretty hard to do too as the original is incredible  So haunting. Also JoJo's Weak is ons better than SWVs original.

Hmm I think I'd take Marilyn Manson :heehee:

Another nomination [Good], Sam Cooke's Summertime.

Can we have a worst one as well so i can nominate Charice's version of Note To God a gazzilion times -_- Honestly. Of all JoJo songs to cover you choose one of the most heartfelt and make it horrible -_-

My fave 10 Covers in no particular order of importance....

1. My Way - Sid Vicious (Frank Sinatra) - Absolutely fantastic when you've had a few beers, you just want to do a mad, Pogo frenzy with your mates

2. Jolene - Queen Adreena (Dolly Parton) - The most cliched of Country Songs turned into a dirty, buzz-saw Punk Sleaze-fest by the magnificent Katie Jane Garside

3. Hurt - Johnny Cash (Nine Inch Nails) - The fact that Johnny was so near to his own death when he did this just gives it that real melancholy and poignancy to it, the cracks in his voice as he sings it just punctuate his own coming mortality, here he strips off his legendary status, simply Johnny the man, not "The Man in Black"... It can almost send me into tears actually... Simple, stripped-down, bare and absolutely gob-smacking, this is TRUE EMO-tional music....

4. Lacuna Coil - Enjoy the Silence (Depeche Mode) - So many bands try to rip off DM, and so many fail miserably.... Lacuna Coil are that rare breed who actually get it right, and totally understand what it is they're doing....

5. Placebo - Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush) - Surprisingly under-stated, quite sparse, almost a lullaby quality injected into the song by Brian Molko.. The contrast with his and the female vocal really add to the effect of the song.. Quite dreamy...

6. Goldfrapp/Dave Gahan - Halo - (Depeche Mode) - And Goldfrapp also get it right.... It's probably cheating a bit to include this, officially, it's a "remix" (as it turned up on DM's remix album), but it's really been re-written and re-imagined, Alison sings the chorus along with Dave, and, again the contrast in vocals are what make the track effective...

7. Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World (David Bowie) - The Leadbelly cover is good, but I think Kurt's re-imagining of the Bowie classic kind of says more about him at the time when it was done (the MTV Unplugged thing in '93) and his own state of mind, for the same reasons that I stated for Cash's version of "Hurt", you can kind of see the same things here with Kurt Cobain in retrospect...

8. Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan) - Simply superb, and an example of how a cover completely takes over as being the definitive version of the song rather than the original... Frankly, I cant even remember what Dylan's sounds like, but GOD-DAMN when Jimi kicks in with that riff I sure know exactly what I'm listening to, and I know I'm in the presence of absolute fukkin' greatness....

9. The Clash - I Fought the Law (err, cant remember who did the original, Richard......? ) - ..As with Jimi, so the same is here, The Clash covered this but it's their version that everyone knows, they just OWN it.... Same goes for their versh of "Police and Thieves", but this just edges it for me for the more rabble-rousing "call to arms" effect that Strummer and Jones put into it..... Brilliant....

10. A Perfect Circle - Imagine (John Lennon) - It takes a very brave (or foolish) band to attempt something quite as defining as this track, but APC make changes, very significant ones too... The APC version comes out of a time of the Iraq war, Post-9/11 fall-out and Neo-Conservative American politics, so it really HAS to change from being the sort of hippie peace idealist song it was, the point is is that the idealism has been crushed under the Jackboot of the Bush Administration, whereas Lennon's original is written at a time of detante and the end of the Vietnam war, so APC very cleverly change the key of the song into a very downbeat piece of music, Maynard sings it in such a way as to sound incredibly lost, hopeless, defeated, even clinically depressed at what the world has become totally the opposite to what Lennon's own hopes were, but again Maynard plays it in such a way that "yeah, things ARE sh!t, but this is what they COULD be"..... I hope that made sense... Just listen to it, you'll see what I mean.... :)

And now for some Covers that are so beyond sh!t it's unreal.....

1. The Saturdays - Just Cant Get Enough (Depeche Mode) - to quote a Depeche Mode song title - WRONG......

2. Girls Aloud/Sugababes - Walk This Way (Aerosmith) - Utterly unispired, insipid, vacuous trash.... Oh, and the song's pretty bad too.....

3. Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love/Personal Jesus - The twin towers of utter cackness this is, it's really insufficient to name the one and not the other as they are both of equal appallingness.... This was the start of the long, hard road INTO creative Hell for Manson... Twiggy had clearly become so thoroughly p!ssed off by the time PJ came out that he just walked, and frankly the band have just never been the same since... MM lost it, BIG TIME, and this was the start of it all....

4. Madonna - American Pie (Don McClean) - A cover so thorough dreadful, that even Madge left it off her "Greatest Hits" album... An absolute floating TURD...... And, as with MM, this saw the beginning of the end for Madge in a creative sense....

5. Britney Spears - I Love Rock N Roll - No you dont Brit, and no matter how hard you try to pretend, we KNOW you dont... So, er, just leave the Rockin' to the ones who actually CAN.... Such as Joan Jett, the genuine rocker chick who did justice to this tune before you......

6. Orgy - Blue Monday (New Order) - I liked Orgy, good band, decent enough Nine Inch Nails-style Alt/Industrial/Rock.... Then for some inexplicable reason, they drop this stinking, festering turd..... And I end up hating them for ages because of it.....

7. Cradle of Filth - Temptation (Heaven 17) - This is just taking the p!ss frankly.... I do enjoy a bit of CoF, they're rather fun in a tacky, 70s Hammer Horror kind of way, but REALLY, just what was the point guys....? What seems like a bit of a lark in a studio jamming session after a few snakebite and blacks really, really SHOULDN'T be released as a single..... At all....

8. Wet Wet Wet - Love Is All Around - CHRIST!!!!!! This piece of sh!t was No1 for about 15 bloody WEEKS, and it was literally EVERYWHERE, on radio, on telly, stamped into our consciousnesses in the most Stalinesque way....... :puke2: :puke2: :puke2: The absolute epitome of everything I hate about covers... Every time I saw Marti Pellow's smug, grinning fizzer, I wanted to kick the telly.... URGH!!!!!!!!!!!! Horrendous, horrendous, horrendous.....

9. Stereophonics - Handbags and Gladrags (Rod Stewart) - Never liked Rod, but liked the sodding Stereophonics even less..... An insipid pile of Dad Rock dog poo, and it was probably this that nailed the coffin for Britpop more than anything else....

10. Blue (I think....) - We Will Rock You (Queen) - Blue, or whoever it was, frankly wanted shooting for this.... One of the precious few Queen songs that I can actually bear, turned into this horrid, horrid trash... And SHAME ON YOU BRIAN MAY for being involved in this travesty, this crime against good music.....

^ Bobby Fuller Four did the original of I Fought The Law. Green Day's cover could be a candidate for the worst list.

And it was 5ive not Blue who destroyed We Will Rock You with Brian May & Roger Taylor playing on the track.

Cheers Rich for both corrections... I kinda got my generic, bland boy-bands mixed up there..... Oh well, I mean, neither are any great loss to music anyway let's face it.....

I haven't heard GD's cover of "I Fought the Law", and I dont really want to either, I mean, what could they possibly do with the tune that The Clash didn't....? Looks like they're kind of undoing the good work they did with more proper Punk tunes like "American Idiot" and "Jesus of Suburbia"..... Unfortunate really.....

best cover ever...

Hurt (orginally by Nine Inch Nails) by Johnny Cash, anyone who wants to argue with this statement can f*** off as they have obviously dont have ears or havent heard it.

as for worst...

Police Story (originally by Black Flag) by Los Campesinos! talk about ruined classic.

I feel so embarrassed, but... Adam Lambert's cover of 'Mad World' is phenomenal. Genuinely great!

It was surprisingly alright... Again, the sparseness of it is effective as with Johnny Cash's Hurt and Placebo's "Running Up That Hill"... It's a definite "less is more" idea.... Still like the Tears for Fears orig though.....

So do I, I just LOVE that cover, think the guy has a phenomenal voice - I haven't seen him too often - only stumbled across him on YouTube - but I think he's a great performer, and apparently, there's talk of him becoming Queen's new front man... Whilst I doubt he (or anyone) can/could ever match Freddie's voice, he'd be better than Paul Rodgers...

Ellie Goulding

Much better than the original imho ^_^

"Americans are stupid Part 1427"

How the hell did Adam Lambert not win 2009's American Idol? :o

The guy who won it was awful compared to him.

I don't really follow American Idol, or any talent show, but weren't something like 3.8/10 votes from the winner's home state?

So here's how it will work, this is the nominations thread, where we must nominate no more than THREE cover songs. (NOT the original songs obviously :heehee:).

Please respect other people's nominations. If you don't like their nomination add it to your WORST cover song nominations list if you must :kink: and Again nominate TWO to THREE songs!

:P

Anywayz, I will keep this open until THURSDAY 4th June :) So you have just a little over a week ^_^

If a pop mod could move it to The Lounge, as I should have put it there in the first place and I would like a few more nominations please :D! Thankyou :P

I would like to swap my nomination for Marilyn Manson - Personal Jesus for this gem
