To be fair Newcastle have been a footballing club in the past, but this season they've been so bad they don't deserve to stay up. Even Sunderland and Hull can count themselves lucky as the teams below them have been so bad. West Brom tried to play football but it didn't suceed.

Sbragia standing down as Sunderland manager aswell.

Yeah Martin Jol is being heavily linked at Sunderland :o :o

Hope he takes some Spurs players to Stadium of Light ;)

I am only really a Spurs fan what happens to the other 19 clubs bar Arsenal doesn't mean much to me so Newcastle going down won't change my life but a "big" club going down is not something I will gloat about

It would have been better if the last day had been on a Saturday from 3pm, just not the same being on a Sunday.

To be fair I think everyone wanted Newcastle to go down. Just listen to the cheers at Villa Park LOL

Imo it's a good thing they're down. Shearer even said it on the interview they need a complete over-haul.

Yeah but there is a very Sunderland/Boro bias on this board lol

Don't think Shearer cares either way tbh no $h!t will stick on him, if he had kept them up he will have been hailed as the second coming of Christ up there and the Sky pundits would have had their trousers and boxers down at their ankles wanking over Shearer but now they have gone down it will be all "not Shearer's fault, he didn't have enough time" so I don't think that he will be that fussed

One I do feel sorry for though is Bobby Robson, probably the last true gent and man of honour in football who will go to his grave in the coming weeks or months having seen the club he worships despite the disgraceful way he was treated go down

TO be fair Newcastle need to go down for a slap in the face and dose of reality. They are no longer the team they were in the proper Keegan era. Mike Ashley will go nowhere, he will not sell now the club's value will collapse, otherwise he'll lose out big. And there's no chance they'll win the Championship by a record margin  I mean how? Most of their big stars will walk away, and wage bills will have to be slashed. In some ways it's easier for clubs like West Brom, Birmingham to yoyo between the two leagues as they have less to lose when they do drop down. Newcastle is going to be a replay of Leeds Utd (ironically with Viduka and Smith again), but it won't be down to League One just yet. I can see them being top 6 for certain, but they aren't going to be the team we recognise from this season. Barton, Jonas, Owen, Martins, Duff, et al will all look for the exit now. And judging from what I've heard Newcastle didn't even seem to give it everything in the 2nd half. Was it a team out of ideas or players planning for next season.

Boro well, we deserve to go down, being the most constipated team in Britain, that is the prize we deserve.

Ashley will sell out for sure, he will be as welcome in Newcastle now as Michael Jackson at a Boy Scouts jamboree, I really think he will fear for his safety now and will get out fast as he can

Money wise they will do alright, they get a Sky "golden handshake" which is effectively a payment for 1 year equal to what got in the last year plus I am sure they will still get 20-30k each home game so I don't think they will be that bad for money

Players can want to leave all they like but they are under contract bar Owen so they can be made to stay if the manager/chairman wants

Owen will leave for sure but he will be no sad loss for them, plus Duff is another injury prone old has been and Martins a one season wonder who is probably really 48

Wages will need to be slashed though, and unless every star player has a relegation wage reduction clause, then they'll have to sell, to keep a stable financial model to play in the Championship.

The Fundamental view though Craig is they HAVE to sell. Martins, Viduka, Coloccini, Duff, Butt, Smith, Nolan, Barton etc. - they're all on high wages which they cannot afford to have. They need to start again completely, and the only way they can do that is if those players leave, which is what is going to happen.

Speculation though

How many of them would get into Premiership sides ? out of that lot possibly Martins, possibly Smith and Barton if anyone dare take a risk on him, Nolan might get back into Bolton or Blackburn and thats it, the rest you listed would not be of interest to premiership sides

Plus with their fanbase they are going to get 30,000+ a game turning up so they will have sustainable revenue, Charlton, Coventry, Southampton, Derby etc can't be compared because they never had the money to get back up

But none of them will have the same sort of debt as Newcastle...

A lot of their players will go to different countries, other Championship or Premier League clubs. Bassong will definitely stay in the Premier League imo.

I think if they come straight back up they will be fine, if they don't then they are in quite deep $h!t and even administration might beckon if they don't come back up so I think Ashley or whoever is in charge next season will throw money in an all or nothing gamble to get them straight back up

Really looking forward to the Championship next season, with the likes of Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Reading, Ipswich, QPR, Burnley/Sheff Utd, Leicester, hey I could go on and on, it really could be anyone's season next year, but imo the favourites are likely to be West Brom. I knew they'd finish bottom this year in the Premiership, said that before it even started, but they're not likely to lose many (any?) of their main players, so going straight back up looks more likely for them than Newcastle/Boro. I think both Newcastle and Boro will actually need to improve their squads to do the business next season, especially Boro, who look very weak as a squad imo, bar a few players. It's going to be a joy to see my local side Peterborough in this league next season, our highest ever finish has been 10th in the 2nd Division of England, and who knows, anything can happen in this league :o

I'm hoping Martyn Woolford can score a hatrick at St James. Park next season for Scunthorpe. Now that would be something.

West Brom will go straight back up, then there's about 14 other sides that could get promotion/play-offs.

Wasted opportunity to get 7th with Fulham losing :(

Not fussed either way about who is relegated and so on, Newcastle will win the Championship by a record margin probably next season

Hahahahaha! Not the slightest chance. They might win it but they'll be very lucky. Useless owner, useless manager and useless players (of which 15 are earning more than 50k a week without having a relegation clause in the contract), the 'big' team that everyone wants to beat and raises their game for.

Newcastle will have about 5 players from their current squad.

Owen and Viduka will leave on frees, Martins will go and I'm sure Lovenkrands was only signed until the end of the season. If so he'll go, he can find better somewhere. Megson has said he'd like Barton, Duff will probably go and will be earning too much, Nolan is good enough to play Premiership but he's only been there 6 months so might stay. Beye, Jonas, Collocini, Enrique, Cacapa will all go back to Spain/France's top divisions, Bassong will definitily move up to the Premiership, Guthrie is a handy player who might go up, S Taylor I think is good enough to go but might stay as he's a geordie.

That leaves Harper (good enough keeper), Ryan Taylor (not good enough for Prem), Nicky Butt (too old), Alan Smith (when will someone realise he is NOT a midfielder?!) and Ameobi!

Newcastle will definitely have one of the biggest overhauls ever seen, no question. The only advantage they have is their name and if they can afford it will be buying players wanted by top Championship clubs. They could probably actually buy a good team of proven CCC players, though I hope they don't come for Earnshaw!

What a day yesterday was. f***ing typical of Sunderland to leave it til the last day to put on a performance, but once again defensive ineptitude let us down. Was a bit like the Liverpool game on the opening day, you can't give players the calibre of Anelka all the time and space in the world to place shots because they'll punish you. Exactly like the Torres shot on our first game of the season, he had the freedom of the SOL to put that shot away and he duly obliged. Sbragia stepping down = most predictable thing ever tbh, wasn't surprised in the slightest.

Last night was immense as well, I don't think i've ever seen the city centre buzzing like it was. I'm not hungover, and I don't have a headache despite being out til after 3am, but I haven't got any voice left at all  Being in that bar when they had MOTD on showing the Villa - Newcastle highlights was amazing

Ah well, I look forward to next season now. I think it's safe to say we can forget this season, it's been a complete write-off. New manager in during the summer, he can bring in players who actually want to play for us and hopefully we can actually start looking up instead of over our shoulders from next season.

I'll be coming down for Posh v Newcastle, cheers.

I never thought I'd be in a pub and have Man United as the game I'm NOT interested in  But then again in the end we sat in a place where we can see both Hull v Man Utd and Villa v Newcastle, I wanted Newcastle to stay up but in the end I'm glad it was Hull who did it because I wouldn't have liked Phil Brown to be haunted for the rest of his career by that on pitch team talk plus I want to see the reverse fixture which was a nice 4-3 win for us! :D

This might be a good thing for Newcastle as they're gonna need a COMPLETE overhaul and they're gonna need to give a manager TIME and let him actually run the club from top to bottom! The way the club is run just doesn't run in English football, they should have looked at what almost happened at Spurs until Harry came in and did the same when Keegan went!

Oh and congratulations to Burnley! Look forward to seeing them next season! :D

You can't compare us with Newcastle though

We have a debt of precisely £0, all the money we spend is self generating, we haven't got a single debt and are one of the very few profitable clubs in Europe, Newcastle have colossal debt and wages that even Utd would shy away from

I think you can compare the two clubs. Both of you were complete jokes with regular manager changes and buying average players for well over the odds.
