BBC Films has confirmed that plans are afoot to bring Doctor Who to the big screen.

In a BBC News article about current Time Lord David Tennant's appearance in spinoff series The Sarah Jane Adventures, a spokeswoman for the corporation's film division disclosed that "a script is in development" for a Who feature.

It is not yet known if executive producer Russell T. Davies or incoming showrunner Steven Moffat are writing the script, or whether Tennant or his replacement Matt Smith will play The Doctor. Tennant will appear in special 'The Waters Of Mars' this November, and two subsequent one-offs, before handing the role to Smith.

The Doctor has previously appeared in the 1965 film Doctor Who And The Daleks and 1966's Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 AD, with Peter Cushing playing the Time Lord on both occasions.

Excellent News IMO

Delighted  Even if the script goes into development though its gonna be ages before anything happens.

I wanted a movie with David though so I'm a bit disappointed at that.

Great news  Sorry Andrewy but I think Who is a little more popular than Veronica Mars :kink:

I don't really see any point in this really. Why not just keep it as a TV series, like it's always been.

Just seems a bit unnecessary really.

is it going to be a cinema release movie or is it going to be an extra long episode on BBC1?
Not hugely exited but perhaps i will be if it's Moffat writing the script.
I don't see the point in this as a different actor is going to play the Dr obviously, unless Matt Smith will take the prominent role of the Dr. All the other attempts of the film version of Dr. Who, were a bit of a flop. It be a long time before they take it to the next level, just leave it as a TV series.
Perhaps it will be David and Matt ... Matt as the current Doctor, and David as the doctor living in the parallel world with Rose et al. Although I don't remember exactly how that all played out, whether David's doctor can get back etc. But I'm sure they'd get him back if they wanted to
I agree. The spare doc was created for a reason. I'd rather it was all about the 2nd DT doctor and Rose though and didnt feature Matt :kink:

I seem to recall a Doctor Who movie released in 1996, where Sylvester McCoy regenerated into Peter(?) McCann's version....also had Eric Roberts in the role of The Master....

It was made by Universal's TV dept, so it was really a Telefilm, as opposed to a "movie", it wasn't released into cinemas.... It was pants anyway.... Certainly not Paul McGann's fault, the story/script was utter rubbish, he went on to voice-acting the Doc in the Big Finish audio books and he was actually really good. Apparently they tried to get Christopher Lloyd to be The Master, pity they didn't, cos he would've been miles better than Eric Roberts.....

Given the dodgy track record of Dr Who films, whether on big screen (as in the two in the 60s with Peter Cushing, a great actor let down by terrible scripts....), or made-for-TV, I'm seriously not convinced by this... Frankly, I'd much rather a US cable TV firm such as HBO or Showtime got involved, injected a LOT of cash into the show and get in worldwide syndication, invest in state-of-the-art FX (of BSG or Heroes standard) and then getting in some really bloody GOOD actors to play the Doc and the Assistant rather than rather bland unknowns who are cheap.....

According to the Daily Express, David is playing the Doctor for the movie! :o

WTF....??? How does that work then.....? Yeah, the "clone" or whatever... But, god, how utterly LAME and obviously "deus ex machina".... I was rather under the impression that Tenant quit the show to go and do other roles... Now, of course I'm thinking it's because the Beeb weren't offering him enough money..... Which, of course he'll get fukkin' potloads of for being in a major studio film.......

Hmm, I wonder if they're gonna do some sort of "Three Doctors" thing (wouldn't be the first time we had a story with multiple Docs)... The new boy, Tenant and Chris Eccleston  .....

Well, if they did, it sure wouldn't work out in Matt Smith's favour......
