Sorry if this has already been mentioned ... but did anyone else see the interview with AM's (Wednesday I believe, BBC2?) Was amazed when Alex Turner quoted Jake Thackray as an influence. Now I know some of you younger fans may think he was taking the mick ... but when you listen to Thackray's lyrics ... and then listen to the Monkey's lyrics now ... he was not taking the mick! I knew there was a reason I began (reluctantly) to like them. Now I know ... its the Thackray Factor!

Yeah they played Fire And The Thud forst ages ago. December 2007 I think. They did an acoustic session for BBC2, and played FATT and Only One Who Knows.
yeah does anyone want to send me a mp3 of fire and the thud acoustic.

I don't have the acoustic anymore on this laptop.

I'm sure Jonny will send it to ya though.

Thanks for that! I'd missed the very beginning of it so I can watch it. Not now like ... off for a nice walk around Rivington as the weather today is so fantastic!

The weather (despite some greyish to black clouds) did indeed turn out to be gorgeous!

Here's Thackray's 'The Lodger'. Forgive the imagery with it ... although there are a lot of Thackray's tunes on youtube - there are few decent visuals to go with them. In fact - my favourite of his 'The Bantam C ock' isn't even on youtube at all (sung by the man himself I mean). There is a decent version by Jasper Carrott on there ... but if ever you can - try and dig out the Jake Thackray one (borrow it from a relative who is 50 plus if you have to!)

And a bit of bio about Jake from his website. By the way ... Dewhirsts was a butcher's chainstore (re the quote on beauty pageants at the top of the page)

Seriously Josh? LOL

It's all over everywhere. I thought you were on MuzicMatters? It's on there.

If not just google 'Humbug blogspot' and you'll find it.

No need, after trawling through some right dodgy sights (my poor innocent mind has been tainted  ), I found it :D Havn't listened to it yet (apart from Fire & The Thud) but I'll post a sort of review later after I do..

Good man Josh. :D

I had posted a mini review, but it got lost when BJ decided to SELF DESTRUCT. :(

On listening, I don't know if it's me or not (probably just me  ) but I can hear similarities between Humbug & Age Of The Understatement. Which is a good thing!

------

EDIT: After first full listen, I think it's my favourite Arctic Monkeys album, it's a hard one though.

YEP, some of the slower songs on Humbug sound SO much like the Last Shadow Puppet's debut album!

you can so tell Alex has been influenced with his singing style from him.

its definitely NOT a HEAVY album

NOT a WEIRD album

NOT a DIFFICULT one

its a grower , like drinking an expensive good wine...

from one hand its just a harder version of the last shadow puppets and on the other hand some straight fast arctic monkeys tunes.

you will not find here HUGE singles like ...you know , but you ll find 10/10 very good tracks.

not a weak moment.

  • 2 weeks later...

I won't have time to get this physically this week because of Reading :( The first Alex Turner (or Matt Helders  ) related thing I haven't bought in it's first week ever! :o

Anyone downloading Sketchead from iTunes?
