Why on earth (from where i'm sitting at least), is John Mayer so underrated both in the UK and USA?

Opinions on him as an artist?

Hmm.

I've only heard one song by him (Vultures) but I absolutely love that!

Ahh, fantastic song, but you're missing out on so much more! His version of Tom Petty's 'Free Fallin' ' is particularly stunning.

Free Fallin' is amazing.

I can listen to it on repeat for days. Slow Dancing In A Burning Room is another amazing track from him. I'm a firm believer that he's never produced one bad song. Not one.

He's never tried to break into the UK..

I don't think he is under-rated in the US. He was awarded 5 Grammys this year and apparently sells heaps. Rolling Stone featured him on the cover of its Rock Gods edition. I think he's the kind of artist that sells steadily all the time without necessarily being high in the charts at any one time. I really like him. Brilliant guitarist and songwriter. He's not my favourite voice but his voice is perfect for what he does.

That's all completely fair enough. He just seems to sit back out of the lime light and away from paps. I can't get my head around his position in America, he's well loved but doesn't have much constant success in the charts (most of the time)

And if i'm correct, he tried to break the UK with Waiting On The World To Change a few years ago!

I loved his song, don't remember the title... it's about the world or so... a 2006 one. :unsire:

Waiting On the World To Change :)

It's untrue that he has never tried the UK, they tried with Bigger Than My Body back in the day too.. and I think he's a chart success in the US, 'Say' hung around for ages and 'Waiting On The World To Change' was massive if I remember right.

He is in my top 3 favourite artists, he's incredible.

He's pretty big in the US, and he used to be in the tabloids a bit while he was dating Jennifer Aniston. I love his music. MINUS 'SAY WHAT YOU NEED TO SAY', DREADFUL.

The rest is very, very good.

He's one of the artists I follow a lot and I have him on my Google alerts. so I can tell you the paps never leave him alone and the world seems to hang on every word he tweets. (He's a very clever, witty tweeter). Just for fun, put him on your Google alerts and see. He also does a brilliant blog called Battle Studies, which is the story of the making of his new album as it happens.

It's funny how perceptions about artists differ from country to country, and how people miss things depending on what their interests are. An acquaintance recently asked me about one of my favourites, as in 'Whatever happened to him?' I told her the artist in question's latest album had sold 3 x Platinum and he's got a contract for a US release and I'd just bought a ticket to his next concert in February!! But he just hadn't drifted into her circle of interests so to her he'd disappeared.

I think it's pretty easy to think artists aren't doing well if they're not doing much in our own country.

I brought Bigger Than My Body when it was released over here, although I haven't listened to it in years and I can't really remember how it went. I think I use to hear it on the car radio on the way to school but both John and the song never really took off in the UK :(

Ohhh no no no, don't get me wrong, I know they never leave him alone. (Sorry, I think I could have worded my initial post a bit better) From where I see it though, it's hardly ever about his music, it's always about him and Jennifer or him and his next girlfriend. For instance, EVERY time I buy or go to buy the National Enquirer (I know, but I can't help it!) he's ALWAYS on the cover with Jennifer, it's absolutely ridiculous. Maybe it's just the way he's so laid back? He seems to be in a world of his own, his tweets are so so random and half of the time I can't make any sense out of them.
