yep, all in all a pretty poor chart, there seems to be no direction, no trend, no 'big thing' just bland insipid music...

I love 1991! Can't say this chart is of the best of 91, but some gems... Rob you're right, there is no underlying trend. I think the second half os 91 tells a different story, we see rave and UK dance making a BIG impact!

when in doubt....post a chart!

37 Quartz With Dina Carroll - Naked Love (Just Say You Want Me) good grief

38 T'Pau - Whenever You Need Me oh my God

39 Paula Abdul - Rush Rush chart fodder

40 Kraftwerk - The Robots one of the only points of interest in a bloody awful chart

So I make that 5 songs that I do like and 3 of those were re-issues. That is a poor chart

What a rubbish chart, these are the only ones I would listen to, and 3 are re-issues

7 REM - Shiny Happy People

8 Madonna - Holiday

10 The Doors - Light My Fire

13 Kylie Minogue - Shocked

18 Lenny Kravitz - It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over

19 Soft Cell featuring Marc Almond - Tainted Love

27 The KLF featuring The Children Of The Revolution - Last Train To Trancentral

So it's agreed we're all KLF fans! It really is a case of diamonds in the dirt on this. Another track on this list that didn't really set the Top 40 alight was Massive Attack "Safe From Harm". For me personally, this is an devastatingly brilliant track that will always be eclipsed by "Unfinished Sympathy". Shara Nelson has a wonderful voice.

I was 14 and pop music was my life! Remember this time very well and liked most of the chart (curmudgeonly indie snobbery hadn't hit me by then)

I still like...

9 Salt-N-Pepa - Do You Want Me

This was their comeback before becoming mega again with 'Let's Talk About Sex' - nice melody and some nice rhymes.

10 The Doors - Light My Fire

Still not sure why this was re-released...the single version was incredibly short I recall.

12 Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman (La Da Dee)

I only still like this because my mate hates it. Must admit it took ages and ages to grow on me. I heard it on Dance Energy's dance chart a few weeks before release and I thought it was awful.

13 Kylie Minogue - Shocked

When Kylie's pop was at its best - slightly naff but not as embarrassing as what went before or as cringingly desperate as what came after.

17 LaTour - People Are Still Having Sex

I have this little curio on 7" - it's aged really really badly but at the time I thought it was the future of dance music.

18 Lenny Kravitz - It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over

The only song of his I've ever liked - totally arsed up by Mutya Buena's producers and destroyed by her terrible new vocal.

19 Soft Cell featuring Marc Almond - Tainted Love

Again, not sure why this was ever re-released.

20 Cathy Dennis - Touch Me (All Night Long)

Loved Cathy!

27 The KLF featuring The Children Of The Revolution - Last Train To Trancentral

Where the Beatmasters took Drummond and Cauty even further into the world of pop - had a brilliant video of a toy car flying around a scale model village.

28 Rebel MC featuring Tenor Fly & Barrington Levy - Tribal Base

Best track in this chart by miles - pre-dated ragga-rave / jungle etc by a good long way and the best use of Enya's 'Orinoco Flow' ever!

30 Massive Attack - Safe From Harm

Back as '...Attack' with the Gulf war ringing in our ears like the percussion on previous hit 'Unfinished Sympathy'. This one didn't do so well, shame as it's quite possibly better.

35 Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Sailing On The Seven Seas

I probably shouldn't like this one, but I do. Andy McCluskey danced like a geography teacher on TOTP.

40 Kraftwerk - The Robots

Great comeback from the techno godfathers.

I had just turned 20 ...

I know & like:

2 Amy Grant - Baby Baby

4 Beverley Craven - Promise Me

10 The Doors - Light My Fire

12 Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman (La Da Dee)

13 Kylie Minogue - Shocked

14 Pet Shop Boys - Jealousy

15 Divinyls - I Touch Myself

18 Lenny Kravitz - It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over

19 Soft Cell featuring Marc Almond - Tainted Love - This new version just did not work for me with Marc Almond's technically perfect voice, spoil the memory and charm of the original.

20 Cathy Dennis - Touch Me (All Night Long)

24 Kirsty MacColl - Walking Down Madison - Co written and produced by Johnny Marr, this is a great uptempo tune. Kirsty was a true great, who is sadly missed today; and it was criminal how she was not selected as one of the 12 Queens of British Pop programme.

27 The KLF featuring The Children Of The Revolution - Last Train To Trancentral - The KLF (Drummond & Cauty) were so far ahead of the music scene it was unreal. They came, they saw, they conquered, then p!$$ed off. Legends!

30 Massive Attack - Safe From Harm - Vocals by Shara Nelson. This Bristol trip-hop debut album Blue Lines was a classic, that remains so today.

31 Marillion - Cover My Eyes (Pain And Heaven)

33 Living Colour - Solace Of You

34 PM Dawn - A Watcher's Point Of View

35 Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Sailing On The Seven Seas
