2nd of 10 weeks at the top for John & Olivia on the Record Business chart in 1978. Holding off the Rolling Stones...and sadily Father Abraham! James Galway gave us his flute rendition of "Annie`s Song"...originally a #1 for the late John Denver in 1974. James, was involved in a car accident some years back, and was in a wheelchair for a period...Positive faults for people who happen to be in such a bad situation, James recovered and threw away the chair...thank goodness. Manfred Mann`s Earth Band played at a Radio One Roadshow in 1978, coincidently with David Hamilton as the host. Smokie almost nicked a Neil Sedaka hit...but this was a different song! Plastic Bertrand sank into "Ca Plane Pour Moi"...I tried to get the translation, and basically Mr Bertrand wanted us to send for some help...quite! Darts covered the Ad-Libs. Goldie had their one and only slice of success "YOU, YOU!" The Motors cranked in for a 2nd hit...as the follow up hit to this...almost sounded like the theme to Grandstand. We must remember though, Grandstand had used 3 themes during it`s existence. The latest one, was first used in 1977. Yvonne Elliman does it for me everytime...I vote her the best female singer ever. Marshall Hain were Julian Marshall, and Kit Hain...unfortunately we tend to forget the floppy follow up "Coming Home" in the Autumn of `78. The Bee Gees got that "Night Fever" after 3 weeks at the top. Kate Bush had her "Man With The Child In His Eyes" up 16 places...If you can find the original copy, you will find that on the cd versions, the beginning is missing "He`s Here, He`s Here". John Paul Young was Australian and got his only UK hit. Heatwave got a hit twice, as "Mind Blowing Decisions" was also on the other side of "Always And Forever" at the end of the year. Brotherhood Of Man got their last top 20 hit, although one more top 40 came via "Middle Of The Night"...3 releases in 1979 failed to chart, even one heavly played in the Cafe in Coronation Street. Ian Dury got his first hit, and it certainly was not a waste! Rod Stewart went World Cup 78 crazy in Argentina...still got the Radio Times 1978 souvenir! Bob and the boys got their first top 10 hit with "Like Clockwork"...Tick Tock Tick Tock! Black Sabbath currently riding the top 50 album chart in 2009, were pulling in some concerts in 1978. Tavares gave us more Saturday Night Fever...so much more interesting than that sung by the Bee Gees. David Joseph provided the stuff with Hi Tension. Elvis was back, via Elvis Costello (Declan McManus). There was a bit of a "Cult" with those Blue Oyster boys...and what a piece of classic pop/rock. Thin Lizzy were live with "Rosalie"...coincidently a connection with Brotherhood of Man...who remember`s "My Sweet Rosalie?" Bruce Springsteen wrote "Because The Night", as Patti Smith scored...the connection with Manfred Mann`s Earth Band, who had another Springsteen hit, 2 years previous with "Blinded By The Light". The O`Jays bounced back into the top 20. Ruby Winters got her second of 3 hits...we told you of a flop on the Next Week`s top 30 last week via 1979. Bob Marley justed missed the top 20 with "Satisfy My Soul". Wild West Heroes were the name of the game, with The Electric Light Orchestra providing Jeff Lynne with another top 10 smash. Western films...are they all the same?! A bit of class with Manhatten Transfer, playing the UK in 1978. Everyone`s thinking who/were Sine? Well, it was a disco hit for producer Patrick Adams. Rock with AC/DC...another concert I saw in 1978. Meat Loaf next door...followed by a forgotten hit by Real Thing (whom I detest)...New Faces 1975! Rafaella Carra performed with a boat in 1978, somewhere I seem to remember..."Do It Do It Again"..."Hold him, Hold him, Hold him fast, never mind if it doesn`t last!" Probably the next biggest thing to pigeon english in 1978, to Bacarra!

19k ahead for La Roux. I didn`t disqualify Cameleonz, not my job! Shinedown manage #57, but Man In The Mirror crashes in at 58, and Thriller in the top 60, and Billie Jean not far behind, Beat It and Smooth Criminal are the other top 75 re-entries as we speak. I prefer the younger Michael, personally...must end with a tribute.

Back in 1972, while working at the BBC, we joined up with Radio One to record some stuff with the family. This was heading towards Christmas, and we were all rather astonished when this song failed to make the top 10...

This is it, as introduced on the Sonny And Cher Show:

I'm amazed my Sophie has held up all week, out of curiosity what is her position likely to be on Sunday?

Thank god for the physical I guess! It's slumping on downloads now.

Yes, another sad happening. As Farrah Facett (Majors) then, married to the Six Million Dollar Man (Lee Majors)...I believe she had left Charlie`s Angels by 1978, if I remember correctly...Was she only in Season One?

Yes only in Season 1, Cheryl Ladd followed her played her sister, but she did appear as guest stint in further episodes.

Well, this week has been a bit like Sunday 3rd May...Girls Aloud physical #1, combined #11...It depends if Florence rises on downloads.

Thanks Dave! Cameleonz so high :o

Do you think any Michael Jackson songs will make it to the top 40 by Sunday?

  • Author
Dave, do you know why the Cameleonz were disqualified?

Some texting rule, I believe. Didn`t it happen to someone else, a while back?

I know I'm not Dave, but I reckon Man In The Mirror will just scrape a top 40 positiion, and Thriller/Billie Jean will end up just outside the 40.

Man In The Mirror is very much likely...Big Top 40 top 10 contender! I think it`s likely to be a #1 at some point, as it became the most requested song on British radio today.

Back in the day, the death of Elvis pushed the entire back catalogue of singles on the market. I glanced at a top 200 back in September 1977 (only available to the minority), and a quarter of the chart was Elvis. The stuff that actually pushed "Way Down" to #1, when it would have stalled at #46!

Could Jordin overtake her as well do you think? :o

That's what I was thinking at the Sunday Chart Predictions thread (in a badly constructed question though ).

There can't be any other reason why it's not eligible to chart.

Wow :o Do you still have access to top 200 data from that period? TBH I like Elvis but Way Down is not one of his best... almost the opposite :puke2:
