30 23 A VIEW TO A KILL - DURAN DURAN

Harold Faultermyer faultered to #2 Officially, 208 saw it differently! Sister Sledge slumping to 2. Kool And The Gang seemed to stick around forever with "Cherish". Radio 2 also favouring that one. Marti Webb`s version of "Ben" was not about a rat, but a tribute to a certain kiddie (covered on Esther Rantzen`s "That`s Life" show)...Ben Hardwick, who needed a liver transplant, but I believe later sadly passed away. Bruce Springsteen certainly came to life in the UK in 1985, after years of flops, and minor hits...Did it really take 10 years?! Always thought that the Boss, was rather too American in the 70s. Madonna had a big year as well, getting 3 singles in the top 20 at the same time at some point. Tears For Fears should have done better with "Head Over Heels"...much better than the rather annoying "Shout", which had been the butt of ex-Radio 2 presenter Steve Jones. The Crowd became the first in a run of Soccer disaster records...This one for the Heysal, where a wall collapsed after Liverpool fans charged Italian fans...Hooliganism at it`s worst, leading to a ban in Europe for the UK. Paul Young was kind of struggling, as his career took a bit of a nosedive. Mai Tai, got the first of 2 top ten hits. Howard Jones was heading the same way. Dead Or Alive couldn`t really match "You Spin Me Around". Denise LaSalle had problems with her "Toot Toot"...so we didn`t mess with it! Scritti Politti got their biggest hit. The Eurythmics did too. "Turn It Up", sang the Conway Brothers...4 Brothers, who we later asked "Please Turn It Off!" The Damned sneaked in, with a small hit...who would have guessed the 1986 recording of "Eloise" would propel them right up the chart? The Commentators were really Rory Bremner, having a go at the Paul Hardcastle hit...in view of a hit in 1982 for impressionist Roger Kitter and "The Brat". Both Style Council, and Glen Frey struggled. The Cult took a slow ride up the chart. Prince, and China Crisis both sold equally every week. Animotion gave us the anthem of the year with "Obsession", all over the radio and only peaking at #5. Duran Duran revived well, with the current Bond theme...the first with Timothy Dalton.

Just ahead of Tom, here`s our "Pops To Flop" feature...3 Songs sure to flop:

There`s Deasto and "Moondagger" released on 27th July...the fantasy world-rock of Randolph Chabot, 22 years old and playing music for 10 years. Flop #1 - no video to be found anywhere though!

And then there is Reverand And The Makers "Silence Is Talking"...John McClure and co, from Sheffield. Heavyweight Champion Of The World was #8 in May 2007, but this newie is sure to flop, with a lot nicked from War`s 1976 hit "Low Rider". Flop #2

Volutary Butler Scheme "Tobasco Soul" released on the 20th...Lounge/House/Garage from the band, from Stourbridge, who played Rochdale`s Feelgood Festival on Saturday. Flop #3.

What`s happening on the Singles front, Tom?

Thanks Dave! This is what the charts are looking like for next Sunday :)

Let's start of with some tracks bubbling under the big top 30:

CIARA is back with Work at number 56, not the same song as the Saturdays of course, but another (fairly) fresh RnB jam which shows Justin and Enrique's favourite girl getting busy with Missey Elliot and some heavy machinery!

MELANIE FIONA is a new R&B diva straight outta Canada, and her track Give It To Me Right has been generating buzz for the last six months and is already a bonafide hit in Italy and her homeland. Loving the Zombies sample! She's straight in at number 40.

Originally released in late 2008, British grimester MASTER SHORTIE reissues Dead End and makes it just outside the top 75 . Another Sound Of 2009er, hoping he can do a La Roux and not a VV Brown...

Also bubbling are:

52 NE LOVE IN TIME - HONEY RYDER

43 NE DON`T TRUST ME - 3OH!3....Dave you tipped this for a "Pop To Flop"...What happened?! :o

36 37 NEVER FORGET YOU - NOISETTES

And now it's time for that all important top 30...

30 17 BILLIE JEAN - MICHAEL JACKSON

29 16 SMOOTH CRIMINAL - MICHAEL JACKSON

28 28 KISS ME THRU THE PHONE - SOULJA BOY

27 32 NUMBER ONE - TINCHY/N-DUBZ

26 NE 21 GUNS - GREEN DAY

25 25 POKERFACE - LADY GAGA

24 27 HUSH HUSH - PUSSYCAT DOLLS

23 NE UMBRELLA - JLS

22 22 RABBIT HEART - FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE

21 15 IN FOR THE KILL - LA ROUX

20 NE POPPIHOLLA - CHICANE

19 NE CRYING LIGHTNING - ARTIC MONKEYS

18 18 RED - DANIEL MERRIWEATHER

17 09 MAMA DO - PIXIE LOTT

16 14 BONKERS - DIZZEE RASCAL/ARMAND VAN HELDON

15 11 UNTOUCHED - VERONICAS

14 NE SWEET DREAMS - BEYONCE

13 12 BATTLEFIELD - JORDIN SPARKS

12 26 I KNOW YOU WANT ME - PITBULL

11 07 RELEASE ME - AGNES

10 08 KNOCK YOU DOWN - KERI HILSON AND CO

09 10 DIAMOND RINGS - CHIPMUNK

08 06 BOOM BOOM POW - BLACK EYED PEAS

07 04 WHEN LOVE TAKES OVER - DAVID GUETTA

06 05 MAN IN THE MIRROR - MICHAEL JACKSON

05 36 I GOTTA FEELING - BLACK EYED PEAS

04 03 PAPARAZZI - LAY GAGA

03 02 BULLETPROOF - LA ROUX

02 01 EVACUATE THE DANCEFLOOR - CASCADA

01 NE BEAT AGAIN - JLS

So JLS look dead-set to get the most inevitable number one of the year (just like we said, weeks ago) with the Chris-Brown-lite Breathe Again. It's a bit Another Level for my liking tbh...

Sheffield's finest (apparently) Arctic Monkeys are new at number 19 with Crying Lightning... hope they're not crying about their chart position!

Green Day aim and fire at the charts with the second single from 21th Century Breakdown, 21 Guns, at hit at number 26.

And after a couple of download-only flops in the shape of Ego and Diva, Beyonce finds that hit songs are made of this, as Sweet Dreams debuts at number 14.

And to round off the singles, here's three Picks To Click, which should be hitting the top 30 in coming weeks.

GIRLS CAN`T CATCH - KEEP YOUR HEAD UP (pretenders to the Girls Aloud/Sugababes crown, but rather more a new Saturdays, this great song looks like a future top 10 hit)

FRANKMUSIK - CONFUSION GIRL (After a total flop with 3 Little Words, and a middling hit with Better Off As Two, hopefully this will be the breakout smash for the London based electro-hipster. Top 20 for sure, but on quality, number one for weeks and weeks...)

VIVA CITY - HAVE YOU EVER FELT SO MESSED UP (New synth-indie band from out of Newcastle, totally new to me to be honest, but sound pretty good, and this song could well be top 40 on Sunday 2 August)

Anything more to add, Dave?

I have to say...It certainly surprised me at 3OH!3! I still say it`s a flash in the pan, though!

And JLS get the physical #1 today too...No suprises there, as GaGa falls from 1 to 2. As the 2nd highest physical entry is Green Day.

The top dvd this week is looking to be "Young Victoria".

I think we are all done and dusted for the coming week. Don`t miss the preview next week!

Green Day probably won't end up that high ;)

Interesting that Essential MJ is still #1, I wonder what will dethrone it?

GO CHICAWESOME AND JLS UMBRELLA! :D

I haven't heard Umbrella, but it'll be VERY interesting to hear a B-Side to a super smash #1 on the chart show.

Honey Ryder will end up being excluded for sure, like their last single did.

3OH!3 for top 40 pleases xD

I wish Master Shortie could do well with Dead End, it's absolutely brilltastic... but it's just bound to have #81 be it's peak now :(

Thanks Dave! 3OH!3 surprised me too... And it looks like neither of us saw Chicane coming! Here it is:

I saw Chicane coming from a mile away. I knew it was going to defy the laws of chart success, it was obviously too good to flop. (:kink:) I am quite surprised it's doing QUITE as well as it is, I expected only top 40 or so, but it is at 15 and 230 on iTunes currently...

08 06 YOU`LL NEVER WALK ALONE - CROWD

The Crowd became the first in a run of Soccer disaster records...This one for the Heysal, where a wall collapsed after Liverpool fans charged Italian fans...Hooliganism at it`s worst, leading to a ban in Europe for the UK.

Whilst Heysel happened in May 1985 The Crowd charity record was for another football disaster that occurred at the start of the month - the Bradford City fire disaster which claimed the lives of 56 people .
The Chicane track is really melodic, it just grows on me on every listen.

Have you heard the original by Sigur Ros?

Have you heard the original by Sigur Ros?

Yes I have, for some reason I do think Chicane's version is much better.
