But Bananarama invented the pop Sugababes have made a living on... so it's only fair they pinch some stuff back. Plus, whereas Sugababes perform like their lives depend on it, po-faced, gammy dancing to their increasingly dire singles (especially the teeth-jarringly dreadful new one), it's nice to see the Nanans, the undisputed goddesses of this style doing what they do best - having a laugh and getting out the dressing-up box and not taking things too seriously. Bravo to them, I say. Even if the single's rubbish.

Couldn't really put it better myself. Unfortunately Radio 1 won't touch them because they are, "like oh my god they are OLD!" (idiots), it doesn't fit into Radio 2's music policy. Luckily - as Kylie would def tell you - it will be their gay audience that will show their indeniable gratitude towards them.

As pop songs go, this ranks low but they are still great and they do it with gusto despite being in their 40s.

i find theres something rather tragic about old women trying to recapture their youth. pop as such is for the young, middle aged mums should be producing more 'adult' material and not repeating things they did over 20 years ago. look at their female contemporaries...kate bush, siouxsie sioux, their material has matured with their age and has a dignity about it. i guess you could argue that bush and sioux never courted the pop market in the same way the banana bints did, fair enough, but why come back to that now?...

the track is ok, nothing special, which it really needed to be to give them some credibility, frankly music fans would be better off supporting girl groups from their generation and not from mine.

When in your opinion did they become old - e.g 40th birthday - and were they young when 39 years 364 days old?

theres no one date... its a gradual process, but as they are old enough to have children who could be in the charts... thats 'old'. i dont know EXACTLY how old they are, they are slightly younger then me so i reckon about 45-6. in theory they could be the mothers of most of the saturdays.. so the young should be listening to the sats and not the sats mums.

But why should anyone only like/listen to music created by someone in their age range?

It's a pretty awful pop song. Shame as they used to be pretty good up until Siobhan left...mind you, that was over 20 years ago!

erm.... because they talk the same language, experiences, have similar drives/goals in life ... mums shouldnt still be having the same aspirations that their teenage daughters are having..

what im saying is IF these women insist on having a comeback, then their music should also have matured, theres nothing so sad and pathetic as middle aged people trying to be young and fitting in with current youth culture.

Sorry but I find that a ridiculous argument - whether a song is by Girls Aloud, Bananarama, Cliff Richard or Vera Lynn and a person likes it, its the song they like - whether the singer has kids, grandkids, wants to pass their driving test is irrelevant.

it depends upon what you want from music, its an art form, a way of expressing an emotion, conveying a story, stimulating something inside you.... if all you want it a 3 minute pop fix then fair enough, but our great musical heritage, the best bar none in the world, wasnt build on that.

if you are happy listening to music created by mums, fair play,... i just dont agree with the whole premis.

I agree with Mushy on this one actually - my mum is 41, so watching people the same age as your mum trying to be young is quite awkward and almost embarassing to watch..

I honestly can't understand that point of view guys. I know you can't answer because you know who's singing it - but if you heard the song without knowing who it was or what the singers looked like - then the age of the singers wouldn't come into it, you'd either like it or not like it.

Anyway, I'm a 43 year old who's loved the Nanas since their first song (can't believe that at the time that I thought the Belle Stars would outlast them) and I think it's a great song.

It's ust a bit of fun, they've never taken the music scene seriously.

then i owe you an apology for assuming you were a 'kid'... sorry.

fair point, but when we do know whos singing it doesnt that make you :puke2: ?... i see your viewpoint and in some ways i agree, ive never been political in my appreciation of music, simply put 'i likes wot i likes' regardless of whos singing it...

i dont much like the track itself, its bland and pretty unremarkable, what would i do IF these old women released a track i liked?... id reluctantly like it! (abit like the new saturdays track...lol), which boarders me on hypocrisy... so im not saying old people cant make good pop, i think im saying they shouldnt! lol as ultimately ive always believed that 'pop' is for the young, by their generation for their generation.... oldies like us can watch from the sidelines!

actually thats true, i think the hardcore fans took them and their material more seriously then the bananabints did themselves as they lined their pockets!

No worries

No way does it make me want to puke  :) - after Abba they're my favourites of all time. They've always had that 'f*** off' attitude which I've always liked about them, have that amatuerish style which has always struck a chord with me. They'd not get past the audition stages of the X Factor if they were starting out now, but they have that certain something and can knock out a classy pop tune (in my opinion) usually with a naff dance routine (which I also love)

Pop should be for everyone, I was over the moon when Cliff Richard got to No 1 with Millennium Prayer, despite that fact that I didn't like the song, purely because of the ageism shown against him.

Anyway I'll be following the charts this week for the first time in a few years - not even sure if songs still don't go up in the second week nowdays.

now id NEVER knock abba who were absolutely classic self penned pop, thats how pop should be imho and not the cheesy garbage bananarama produced most (but not all) of the time. abba = class, bananarama = crass....

i never really 'got' their f off attitude, as they were born out of the punk movement i should have liked it... but it doesnt equate... having a punk attitude then producing cheese ...

yes pop should be for everyone, but differing generations should be appreciating it in different ways pertainant to their age... i quite like some modern r & b, but id be a right knobhead if i tried to dress the part and talk the (chavvy) talk.. which is the crux of my argument against the bananabints , if they are coming back imho they should be producing more adult, 'abbaesque' pop and not the teenage cheese.

Bananarama are fabulous... Rob, get off your high horse.

As for credibility - you obviously forget the album they made called Pop Life - featuring Paul Cook from the Sex Pistols on drums and Killing Joke member Youth on production duties.... they've been there, seen it, done it...and now they're doing what they love - making pop music.

OK, it's far from their greatest single, but it's certainly worthy of a high chart placing, and it's GREAT to see these 2 lovely ladies back where they belong.

Sad indeed... hardly - especially when you look this great minus ANY surgery.

but russ, you are a fan, so you like that cheesy pop theyve littered the charts with.

been where exactly? done what exactly?.. so they mixed with some cool dudes, but there music was pure pop cheese, nothing more nothing less ... now thats fine, but dont try to pretend it was summut it wasnt... like i said, abba = class, bananabints = crass, not in the same league at all.

funny thing is.... in the punk era that gave rise to many greats that are still around today, i couldnt possibly conceive of MY generation listening to 'old' artists, i guess you could argue that we didnt have too as our generation had creative artists capable of forging out new sounds for us... 'da kidz' (of the time). maybe this is why i take the attitude i do, because ive seen at first hand each generation having 'their' music , their identity and not the big karaoke show music is becoming now.

i feel sorry for todays youth.... living on our leftovers, re-vamping retro sounds/fashions...

Sad indeed... hardly - especially when you look this great minus ANY surgery.

I know, they must have some pictures in their attics.
