It actually lasted for 7 weeks. Many Music weeklies suffered including Melody Maker, Disc, and Record Mirror. Doesn`t stop the charts for us, because we have the EMI ones...the long forerunner to Record Business, and MRIB. This was the last week of said strike. Cliff scored his 4th hit, and first #1. Bobby Darin got his only #1...Some would say "Mack The Knife" was #1, but not on any chart (apart from NME...who were much open to question, at that time). Lonnie Doengan (a Scotsman) gave his rendition of the battle, between the British and the Yanks...Johnny Horton, and Glen Mason also took this song into the top 20. Elvis had problems, as his "Big Hunk" wouldn`t get higher than #4. A Teenager In Love not only kept Marty Wilde (Kim`s Daddy) happy, but also new boy Craig Douglas, and the American original by Dion. Connie Francis only got her lipstick to #4, as well as on the collar! Russ Conway (ever appearing on the Billy Cotton Bandshow), had 2 hits in (and 2 #1s), on an unchanged top 7. Peter Gunne provided Duane Eddy with another guitar theme to a TV series, and a Double A sided single. Anthony Newly, had a battle with Lloyd Price...Anthony won the race and got #7, as Lloyd peaked at #12. Alvin And The Chipmunks (and the voice of David Seville) was the show...possibly the U.S. equivalent of Pinky And Perky, that gave the Chipmunks a top ten hit. The late, and brilliant Mr Frankie Vaughan was having problems...was it nearing the end of his career, we wondered? No, it wasn`t because, there was the man at #1 in December 1961...with a Gene McDaniels U.S. hit, and UK flop for Paul Raven (who became one Gary Glitter). Ricky Nelson kept his double A in the top 10 for nearly 5 months. Paul Anka (later known for the English translation of "My Way")...was heading for his final top 3 hit. Johnny Mathis was almost drying up...coming back for more in those 1970s. Ruby Murray became an early Madonna, by way of having loads of top 20 hits in the same week, some 4 years earlier. Perry Como was almost heading the way of Johnny Mathis (abeit a top 3 hit in 1960), and of course he also came back in the 1970s as well. The Everly Brothers were far from finished...already 2 #1s with "All I Have To Do Is Dream", and "Bird Dog". The current double A, peaked at #10. Ruby Wright paid tribute to the Air disaster, that took away the lives of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper in Feb 59. The hits were really drying up for Pat Boone...he just couldn`t take to Rock N`Roll. His son, Nick Todd scored a hit with "At THe Hop" in 1958, and also daughter Debbie took a U.S. #1 in 1977 with "You Light Up My Life"...curiously missing the UK top 40. Joan Regan took another U.S/UK song into the chart, as "May You Always" also made the top 15, for the McGuire Sisters. Craig Douglas was about to get his biggest hit, by covering a Sam Cooke song. Chris Barber and his Jazz Band wouldn`t go away...B-rye would tell us that "Petite Fleur" means "Little Flower", but he doesn`t like this bit! Of course this week in 2009, Chris Barber is teamed up with some vintage classics, along with Kenny Ball and Mr Acker Bilk on the new album "Boaters, Bowlers, And Bowties". Winfred Atwell was probably feeling a bit put out by now...as the piano, had moved Russ Conway`s way. "Midnight Shift" was rather small for the late Buddy Holly...not a good release, following "It Doesn`t Matter Anymore/Raining In My Heart". Finally Tony Brent bombed, and it was all over in a flash...with "Dark Moon" being his biggest hit in 1957. By the way...Old Chart fans, over on replay radio (that`s www.replayradio.net), there is a whole host of classic chart countdowns on a Tuesday evening 6-11pm...a randomly chosen uk top 20 from one month and year, a European classic countdown, and between 9-11pm Richard Todd spins the UK Top 40 from this very week in the past...this week it`s July 1981. On a Sunday between 8-10pm, there`s my old mate/chart compiler Peter Jay...don`t miss him! I`m feeling really old now...So, bang up to date with the Pre-Orders this week 2009: The Top Single Pre-Orders: 01 I KNOW YOU WANT ME - PITBULL (Physical release 27th July) 02 POPPIHOLLA - CHICANE (Physical release 27th July) 03 SWEET DREAMS - BEYONCE (Physical release 3rd Aug) 04 KEEP YOUR HEAD UP - GIRLS CAN`T CATCH 3rd Aug 05 NEVER LEAVE YOU - AMELLE/TINCHY STRYDER 3rd Aug 06 BARNEY RUBBLE - THE TWANG 27th July 07 TAKE ME TO THE HOSPITAL - PRODIGY 31st Aug 08 WHERE DID ALL THE LOVE GO - KASABIAN 10th Aug 09 FUNHOUSE - PINK (Physical release 3rd Aug) 10 CRYING LIGHTNING - ARTIC MONKEYS (Physical release 17th Aug) Girls Can`t Catch #1 on Sunday 9th August? Note: "Umbrella" and JLS should actually be at #32 behind Freemasons...We know we did the survey! Actually it`s down 9 places, and last week it actually made enough sales to be #25 on the Sunday Official Top 40...So what really is happening? This week JLS retain the #1, beating Mr Hudson by 9.1K...I would have thought that "Supernova" would have beaten "Beat Again" odds on, this week! It might have been a kind of 40 year salute to the moon landing. Outer limits of the top 60 suggest 2 hits in by Pink...Funhouse is 54, and Please Don`t Leave Me is 55! The rest of the 60 lines up with 2 x Ciara, Sean Kingston is 56 (thought he was younger)! Beat It is still in, and Dirty Diana. Tiny Dancer is back up, for Ironik and that lot. Empire of The Sun back up. Melanie Fiona falls to #60. Florence And The Machine have "Got The Love" not far away...back up for Prodigy. Use Somebody hangs around for KOL. Lily Allen is in the 75 with "22", and we wait and see if "Radar" can make it for Britney Spears, just outside the 75. Flo Rida/Nelly Furtado might set the world on fire with "Jump" too... Note: These are not the Official Charts (you know I get fed up with saying that, every week, but they`re not)! They are based loosely on Chart Show tv`s...but do not include airplay, and are much more ahead and include today`s sales! The most up to date chart in Britain, at this point...except no substitute! The Chart Show Top 20 Vids can be seen Saturday 9-10.30am/Sunday 11-12.30PM...although you won`t see Mr Jackson (quite a relief really)! ;) Now I will look forward to reading the comments of young B-rye! You know, last week our views were down by 200!!! What happened? Anyway off we go now to listen to Wes Butters on Real Radio with "High School Days"...80s retro!

(or am I? :kink:) If that top ten remains on Sunday I'm on course for 6 points in Ben's game! :o

July 24, 200916 yr I would have thought Madonna's Celebration would be a near cert #1 come August 9th. http://www.teletext.co.uk/planetsound/news...elebration.aspx
July 24, 200916 yr Don't bet on it - Shakira is also released on 5th October I'm not sure Shakira will be a major threat on the album chart if past form is anything to go by. Anyway, shame shame shame for Frankmusik. :( It's far better than the last single and deserves to outpeak it.
July 24, 200916 yr I would have thought Madonna's Celebration would be a near cert #1 come August 9th. http://www.teletext.co.uk/planetsound/news...elebration.aspx I think that may be misreporting - its released to radio on August 3rd. Unless she's planning on an immediate download release Its not due physically until mid-September
July 24, 200916 yr I think that may be misreporting - its released to radio on August 3rd. Unless she's planning on an immediate download release Its not due physically until mid-September And how many physical singles are bought nowadays. Her release strategy appears to be identical to what she did with 4 Minutes, when it was available to download in the UK/Europe on the day of first official airplay, to limit a loss of sales via illegal downloads. Still maybe her own official website is misreporting the release date. http://www.madonna.com/news/
July 24, 200916 yr I thought Shakira would do the same thing with She Wolf worldwide, but it seems not :(
