From time to time, we get singles which are number two or three on midweeks, then improves to number one by Sunday. But was there ever a case where a single starts off in a top 10/20 (or lower) position in midweeks then goes to the top on Sunday? Was there ever a surprise like that before? Just wondering.

I'm sure that if mids existed back then, Elton John's 'Something About The Way You Look Tonight / Candle In The Wind 1997' must have jumped out of nowhere to #1 on 600k+ sales ;)
If my memory serves me correctly Rihanna started at number 8 in the first set of midweeks on a tuesday with umbrella and ended up number 1 that week

Released 13 September 1997, Monday if I recall correctly, so not a surprise as would be #1 in midweeks.

perhaps we can get 28-1 if Mr Hudson makes it, although that's doubtful imo.

Would it really be fair to count it, seeing as it's showing at #28 was an obvious error? I agree though, it won't be #1 either way so I guess it doesn't matter so much.

Candle in the Wind was actually released on the Saturday after Diana's funeral. I remember searching all over for a copy and not being able to buy it until Monday.

Back to the original question, wasn't Mercy quite low down on the first set of mids?

For a time when physicals counted 100%, Ciara's Goodies was midweek #4 but ended up at #1.

Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone started at 5 if I am not mistaken

And Tinchy Stryder featuring N-Dubz - Number 1 started at 3
