If we had a Buzzjack post of the month contest this would surely be a candidate to win.

A beach ball now has a higher scoring tally than half the strikers in the Premier League :heehee:

Cheers for the vid TIP, I heard it described on Soccer Saturday. Found it hard to visualise.

Carlisle seem to be continuing their slide down the League One table with a 3-1 defeat away at Yeovil.

Good choice for captain there, I see.

 at that picture. If you were the Liverpool fan who threw that ball onto the pitch wouldn't you just be in hiding right about now?

The beach ball goal should never have stood. The ref was wrong to allow it within the rules of the game, but Sunderland not coming away with 3 points would have been an injustice. Liverpool were just so disfigured and disjointed and Jay Spearing is never in a million miles good enough for Liverpool. He looked like a little lost boy yesterday. Definitely don't think we're out of the title race yet, next weekend against Man Utd is an absolute must win...
Beach ball aside if you can't score more than a beach ball you can't grumble. I mean why didn't someone get rid of it, or are they too highly overpaid for that :drama:

Reina kicked it into the goal, the wind blew it back out while we were on the attack. It's just one of those things, desperately unlucky but I honestly couldn't give a shit - it's about time something like this went our way. We fully deserved the win and like Roo said, a draw or a defeat would have been a massive injustice.

If anything, the goal is a blessing in disguise for Liverpool because it's taking all the attention away from how poor they were.

Wonder if Liverpool should sign up the beach ball as back up for Torres. If they don't then Man City surely will.
It's probably the most open season for a long time. Everyone of the big four teams have major faults; Manchester United don't seem to have anywhere near the same cutting edge as last year, and haven't really replaced quality with quality, Chelsea are all over the place really with Cech really struggling so far, Liverpool don't seem to be able to create anything when Torres and Gerrard aren't around and Arsenal don't have anywhere near enough experience in their squad to mount a title challenge. Gonna be interesting to see where Spurs will finish, if key players stay fit they should be will up there in the top four.

Yeah this season will definitely be interesting. I think all the Top 4 teams are going through a period of change at the moment, and no particular team is looking a cut above another at the moment. Man Utd, yeah they probably do look the favourites at the moment but they've been desperately shocking at times this season, so who knows. I definitely think Liverpool missed Torres and Gerrard yesterday. I think it was more the fact that because they were both definitely out and it had been branded about the media, the Sunderland players knew they had a chance. As lets be honest, a lot of teams just concede defeat as soon as they're playing one of the top teams, so fair play to them. The 3-5-2 formation didn't quite cut it off yesterday, but the season's a marathon not a sprint. I'm looking forward to Aqualini coming into the Liverpool team as I think he'll offer us a lot, but we'll just see.

To be honest I don't think even that Aqualini kid alone will bring that much, especially if Torres and Gerrard are out. Can't say I've ever seen him play like but I've heard he's not that much of a game changer, but I guess we'll see.

Liverpool need goals though. There's no-one there who's gonna bag 20+ a season if Torres gets injured. Voronin is a shocking player, Kuyt isn't a out and out goalscorer and Babel is useless. And with the greatest respect to N'Gog I don't think he's anywhere near good enough. He's more Sinama-Pongolle then Torres to be honest.

Too much emphasis is put on the Torres-Gerrard thing - we almost won the title last year, and for a large bulk of the season they barely ever played together. Another striker is definitely of the essence, but whose going to want to come and play for Liverpool when they know they've arguably the world's best striker in front of them in the pecking order? Is not going to happen, especially in World Cup year. I hope Aqualini will make a difference - he seems a very classy player. I think he's definitely the sort of player we need in midfield and he's very box to box, so more goals will be scored. The Roma fans went mental when he was sold, a lot of that is probably down to the fact he's a Roma boy, but the Roma medical team didn't handle his injury very well which is why its reccured, and is why he's been injured so much over the past 2 years.

I think Liverpool are pretty strong in attack. Goals will come from all over the pitch - its the defence i'm more worried about personally.

I think another thing Liverpool missed yesterday was an Alonso, someone who could come off the bench and change the game in your favour. Mascherano was probably the best player to come off your bench yesterday and he didn't make much of an impact which says it all. The rest of the options were pretty poor tbh.

I can remember last season at the SoL it was a pretty even affair until he came on, completely changed the game and there was only ever one team going to score after that.

Another thing, how did Carragher ever manage to get into the England squad? Was probably the poorest performance from anyone from either team yesterday, he's a complete liability. I don't know if it's his age showing or what but the amount of times he allowed players to get the ball past him was criminal, had we punsihed Liverpool for their mistakes he'd have been single handedly responsible for another couple of goals. I also have to agree with Roo that the young Spearing lad doesn't look ready for first team football yet, not by a long shot.

All in all I don't think Liverpool will win the title, or come close. Was saying to my mate yesterday that they'd do well to finish 3rd this season and a Liverpool fan that overheard me completely agreed.

I am looking forward to seeing how this season finishes. There have been some surprise results already.

We have a few fixtures this week with the Champions League and the Coca Cola Championship. There is also Leeds V Norwich this evening.

Think there is another fixture on Friday as well. Can't remember who is playing. :(

To be fair to Lucas and Spearing they were pretty much the only central midfield players we had avaliable. There was no way Mascherano would have lasted 90 minutes as he'd been half way around the world, and only got back Thursday night. Masch never plays after he's been on international duty, Aqualini is injured, and so is Gerrard. But Spearing will never ever make it at Liverpool, nor any Premier League team just because he's not good enough. Even though to be fair to him there was a mass amount of pressure on him on Saturday, and he was playing in a system that Lierpool have only ever played in a competitive match once or twice before.

Carragher is past his best now, but 2005/2006/2007 he was on top of his game. He's never had the most pace, but his positioning and leadership qualities are second to none. Top defender. Was definitely as good as Terry and Ferdinand back before he made the right decision to retire when Ledley King was getting picked ahead of him. :manson:

You've pretty much highlighted exactly the point I was making, the overall lack of strength in depth at Liverpool. You've not got a real game changer you can bring off the bench to grab you that vital goal or turn a game on its head (Example: Alonso last season). If I was a red i'd be very concerned, especially with teams like Spurs and Man City who can now bring quality off the bench.

Not that Sunderland's bench is particularly amazing like, but we're at least making progress with the inclusion of the likes of Zenden. For me Liverpool are a team that seem to be going backwards. You did exceptionally last season but this season, even with your star players you've been all at sea at times and there's already talk of your title challenge being over in October. It's up to Rafa to inject that bit of confidence into the players again and get them performing because if you're serious about the title you really cannot afford to drop any more points against teams who you should really be winning with ease.

I'd love us to have more strength in depth but two yankee cowboys seem intent on paying off debt on the club.

We're just going through a bit of a blip at the moment. Is unfotunate that we've had a few injury problems at the wrong time, but that's football so I can't moan about it. There's no way i'm concerned at the moment though. Maybe if we get beat by Lyon and Man Utd then yes, but two victories will be a big thing.

It's a shame tbh, I can see it hampering any hopes you'd have for the title (Just my opinion like). I'd rather not be sitting here saying Liverpool are being counted out of the title race in October mind, would much prefer to see you or Arsenal lift the trophy this season as opposed to United or Chelsea. Again.

There's no way we're out of the title race yet, despite what some people are saying (even fans are thinking!). No team thus far has been head and shoulders above another, and as has been proved so far, the 'weaker' teams can take points off the big teams, as well as any of the top teams being able to beat each other on any given day. Long way to go yet. 3 points against Man Utd and it's game on again.

Well, best of luck next weekend anyway. You're going to have to pray at least one of Gerrard or Torres is fit and available for the game because I really can't see you winning it without them. Man United haven't exactly been performing like champions themselves but they're picking up the points and that's what makes the difference. It's set up to be a cracking game anyway.
