hmm.... ill try this, a thread focusing on exactly 30 years ago, so there will be a 30 years ago chart every week plus commentary. if i can be arsed! then we can re - live events as they unfold from the past.

might do a 20 years ago thread and a ten years ago thread.... anybody fancy taking them on? might appeal to people who were really into their music in 89 and 99, all you need is committment and knowlege of what was happening both musically and fashion wise. ideally id do a 45 years ago thread, to catch the swinging 60's in full swing!

anyway.... 20/8/79 the chart.

well what a mixture. pop, disco, reggae which was big in 79, new wave, rock n roll revivalists.

1 2 We Don't Talk Anymore CLIFF RICHARD - cliff reaching #1 again, he became popular and was a fav of rik in the young ones!

2 1 I Don't Like Mondays BOOMTOWN RATS - soon kicked off their punk image, sold out and courted the pound. a popular track but i dont like it.

3 11 Bang Bang B.A. ROBERTSON - student music, silly, querky, nonsense.

4 3 Reasons To Be Cheerful (Pt. 3) IAN DURY AND THE BLOCKHEADS - classic id, poignant, sarcastic, melodic...great music!

5 4 After The Love Has Gone EARTH, WIND AND FIRE - slushy soul

6 9 Duke Of Earl DARTS - wtf was a 'duke of earl'? dont make sense from these 50's revivalists on their last legs.

7 6 Hersham Boys SHAM 69 - punkpop , jimmy pursey n co, good track!

8 14 Gangsters SPECIALS - THE record that started the two tone revival. the new ska vision that would start the careers of terry hall, madness and others . the 60's themed cult film 'quadrophenia' had boosted interest in all things 60's and on the back of punk- new wave the mood was right for a 'mod' revival. great stuff.

9 5 Angel Eyes ABBA - imho past their best by now.

10 10 The Diary Of Horace Wimp ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA - a rather silly song and pretty annoying. old hippies slowly dying out.

11 19 Ooh What A Life GIBSON BROTHERS - mateniques finest...lol.. good latin influenced disco.

12 13 Angel Eyes ROXY MUSIC - roxy became popular again in the late 70's with rather smooth tracks. ferry was possibly ahead of his time regarding 'style' which became big in the early 80's.

13 23 Is She Really Going Out With Him JOE JACKSON - student music...

14 12 Beat The Clock SPARKS - rather proto hi nrg disco pop from the mael twins.

15 17 Sweet Little Rock'n'Roller SHOWADDYWADDY - another rock n roll revivalist act in the sunset of their careers, big in the mid 70's when the 50's teddy boys were all the rage... 50's revivalists, but the mood is jumping on a decade to the mods n rocker era from the mid 60's fashionwise.

16 8 Wanted DOOLEYS - hmm... family group, this was an ok pop song.

17 20 Morning Dance SPYRO GYRA - silly 1 hit wonder

18 30 Money FLYING LIZARDS - novelty cover track, it was 'of the time' but is just plain daft now.

19 7 Can't Stand Losing You POLICE - rock reggae fushionists, they were big in 79 with their unique fusion of rock and reggae.

20 16 Stay With Me Till Dawn JUDY TZUKE - student music, a great track, she should have gone on to be big.... now her offspring (bailey) has had a hit with 'uninvited' recently.

21 18 Born To Be Alive PATRICK HERNANDEZ - american disco-pop

22 22 Gotta Go Home / El Lute BONEY M - thankfully on their way out.

23 54 Street Life CRUSADERS - a decent bit of commercial jazz funk which was big in clubs.

24 21 If I Had You KORGIS - average pop

25 - When You Are Young JAM - tbh i dont know this! from possibly the geezer who kicked off the 60's revival.

26 48 Duchess STRANGLERS - punk? nah...just shrewd enough to use the new sounds to get noticed. a good act though

27 27 Just When I Needed You Most RANDY VANWARMER - awful stuff from the bloke with one of the daftest names ever!

28 15 Girls Talk DAVE EDMUNDS - quality pop from mr edmunds

29 35 Gone Gone Gone JOHNNY MATHIS - still there was 'mums' music...

30 32 Lost In Music SISTER SLEDGE - disco.

31 29 Teenage Warning ANGELIC UPSTARTS - abit of punk for you, i like these

32 36 You Never Know What You've Got ME AND YOU - tbh i dont know this!

33 33 If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against me BELLAMY BROTHERS - awful, lame silly aor american paprock. what a crap joke <_<

34 34 Girls Girls Girls KANDIDATE - dunno this either

35 57 Reggae For It Now BILL LOVELADY - another silly name and another reggae track. personally i like it!

36 52 Get It Right Next Time GERRY RAFFERTY - student music... from the old hippy nightowl himself.

37 37 Rock Lobster B-52'S -american punk...abit silly, abit cult.

38 24 Breakfast In America SUPERTRAMP - student music, old rockers fav..

39 44 Strut Your Funky Stuff FRANTIQUE - french disco act and one hit wonder...

40 26 Good Times CHIC - class funk.

41 25 My Sharona KNACK - punky pop one hit wonder currently featured on an oatibix advert.

42 40 You Need Wheels MERTON PARKAS 4 - 60's revival act with a novelty hit, one hit wonder.

43 - Spiral Scratch BUZZCOCKS - great stuff from a class punk act

44 68 Boy Oh Boy RACEY - another fading 50's revivalist covering a buddy holly track.

45 28 Bad Girls DONNA SUMMER - peep peep! lol, the queen of disco paying homage to prostitutes

46 64 Lines PLANETS - excellant track! reggae/pop should have been huge

47 31 Silly Games JANET KAY - silly reggae track, one hit wonder

48 51 Conscious Man JOLLY BROTHERS - dunno this

49 63 Lookin' For Love Tonight FAT LARRY'S BAND - nor this

50 39 Rock Around The Clock TELEX a novelty track, a 50's track done in an uptodate 'futurist' mode...

all in all you can see that reggae and disco were predominant, with new wave, pop and 50's revivalists coming close behind. as 50's revival acts were starting to fade, in came the 60's influenced acts. quadrophenia had stirred interest in 'mods' and parkas were becoming fashionable along with 'harringtons'. skinheads too were resurging, losing their original 'bovver boy' image of football hooligans, they were now a more respectable class of guy. (but still 'geezers')

79 is all about The Specials and Gary Numan for me.

and obviously 'London Calling' - The Clash, 'Highway To Hell' - AC/DC, 'Off The Wall' - Michael Jackson, 'Three Imaginary Boys' - The Cure, 'Unknown Pleasures' - Joy Division are all great albums from the year.

But 2 of my most favourite albums ever were released 1979,

Gary Numan - 'The Pleasure Principle'

The Specials - 'Specials'

(sorry didnt want to focus on the chart as i hadnt heard half the tracks lol).

Im pretty sure it was the start of 2-tone, rather than a revival, it was a ska revival in the image of '2-tone'. 2-tone = ska+punk (the 2 tones), there wasnt much (or any) punk before the mid-70's and ska didnt really come back in until the late 70's.

two tone was a fabric in the 60's worn by mods, trousers, i had some! (as a boy) and also as this vid shows, it uses the 2 tones (black and white) yet another 60's fashion referance.

interesting, punk and ska?... dunno, two tone ska is pretty much just ska...

so two tones origins seem to be somewhat obscure, i always took it as a 60's referance as two tone was a 60's fashion. i also think 2 tone is refering to skin colour...you have both black and white men playing ska which is black music...

2 Tone (or Two Tone) is a music genre created in England in the late 1970s by fusing elements of ska, punk rock, rocksteady, reggae and pop. Within the history of ska music, it is classified as its second wave.[citation needed]

[edit] Origins

The 2 Tone sound was developed by English musicians (mostly based in the West Midlands area) who grew up hearing 1960s Jamaican music and decided to play a similar style of music.[1] They combined that style with influences from contemporary punk and pop music. The new music genre (and associated subculture) became known as 2 Tone because most of the bands were signed to the record label 2 Tone Records at some point. Other record labels associated with the 2 Tone sound were Stiff Records and Go Feet Records. Bands considered part of the 2 Tone genre include The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat, Madness, Bad Manners and The Bodysnatchers.

The music term 2 Tone was coined by Jerry Dammers of The Specials. Dammers, with the assistance of Horace Panter, created the Walt Jabsco logo to represent the 2 Tone movement. It was based on an early album cover photo of Peter Tosh, and included an added black-and-white check pattern

from wiki....

so theres no 60's referance in that, however that doesnt mean theres wasnt one!

I do believe it oringated (or rather was influenced) by the 60's, but in terms of the musical movement it started late 70's.

yep. two tone wasnt a musical referance from the 60's.

You hardly ever hear Angel Eyes by Abba now yet I always preferred it to the other more popular side of the double-A, Voulez Vouz.

Hey Mushy, do you think you could post the top 10 or 20 albums from that week each week? Doesn't have to be with comments. May be interesting to see if any of those with a big hit single are matching it in the albums? I can post it if you like but don't want to step on your toes!!

no stepping on toes.... but bri beat us to it!

The records I find interesting in this chart are 'Spiral Scratch' which charted years after it was originally released back in '76. It's still the Buzzcocks best work, back when Howard Devoto was the singer and they had a truly fantastic line-up.

Patrick Hernandez's 'Born to Be Alive' is actually a really great piece of disco music. You can actually hear the influence it had in the work of DFA Records / LCD Soundsystem etc. (well, I think so anyway) and it'd still sound pretty good today.

'If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me' is a terrible joke, but it did hold the record for longest song title ever in the charts until The Freshies had a very minor hit with 'I'm in love with the girl on a certain Virgin Megastore check out desk'.

The B52's 'Rock Lobster' still sounds great - such a shame most people immediately think of 'Love Shack' or the god awful version of 'The Flintstones' when they're mentioned.

Janet Kay's 'Silly Games' is ace - anyone remember the Lindy Layton cover from 1990?

  • Author

well heres a youtube vid of that rather obscure track by 'the planets' - 'lines'. as a white reggae rock act they are clearly doing 'the police', but imho they didnt do a bad job! i like this .

and heres the merton parkas , a silly play on words and yes....they were a 'mod' group! looking more mod then anything from the 60's ever did!

and finally one of our great unsung heros ... ian dury.... this is one hell of a class pop song, with influences here ranging from jazz through to african... they dont compose music like this anymore.

back in 79 'da kidz' didnt have much disposable income, and it was the slightly older generation (25-35) who possibly had more. their musical tastes too were not quite up to date, i think this shows in the album charts by quite alot of the more 'sober' acts in here. apart from the police, there was no reggae reprisented, unlike the singles chart. 'modern' groups who were reprisented were by and large 'safe' acts, blondie, police, rainbow ... whilst the 'old hippy' brigade were quite heavily in evidence , mike oldfield, supertramp, gerry rafferty, queen, elo.... the sex pistols by then were a complete joke.

it's a shame the Flying Lizards are considered 'plain daft' now... Money was far from a novelty track.... and it's a shame Joe Public only seem to remember this track by this band.

Their best moment, IMO, was the follow-up 'TV' and the self-titled album that followed is like gold dust these days - the cd selling for up to £50 on eBay.

The charts great - I even rather like the Cliff track for sentimental reasons and there are a fair share of the best singles released in the whole decade in that chart. Sparks, Chic, M, Joe Jackson, The Specials, Boomtown Rats.... a great, great chart.

14 12 Beat The Clock SPARKS - rather proto hi nrg disco pop from the mael twins.

A classic Giorgio Moroder production. And Ron and Russel Mael are brothers but not twins.

I still love a bit of sparks. In recent years they've recorded some of their best material.

I know Sparks fans don't really like the Moroder stuff... but I still think the No 1 in Heaven album is their best - I bought it on CD recently after having worn out the vinyl... still sounds incredible now.

I think they should do another album with Moroder.... he is still working isn't he? I remember his single 'The Chase' around 10 years ago - clear that he's still making classic records, still has the golden touch.
