1964, The Kinks third single 'You Really Got Me', was at No.1 on the UK singles chart. Future Led Zeppelin founder and guitarist Jimmy Page played tambourine on the track.

1964, Rod Stewart recorded his first single, a version of Willie Dixon's 'Good Morning Little School Girl.' Future Led Zeppelin bass player John Paul Jones played on the session.

the yardbirds also covered this as their first release.... well dodgy lyrics!

interesting, 2 led zep referances...

As Tears Go By is one of my all-time fave songs and Marianne's version is far better than the Stones one.

Wonder if Shame Shame Shame is the same song as Shirley & Company in '75.

the kinks hold #1 spot whilst the excellant honeycombes hold #2. the supremes, hermans hermits and a cautious roy orbison are climbing... roy will get #1 but boy, what a slow climb!

matt monroe is the highest new entry with 'walk away', out of all the 'mums music' in the charts (jim reeves, dean martin etc) i rate matt monroe quite highly, reckon hes got a good voice..

but then come 3 new entries that are among my all time favs...

#40 'im crying' - the animals .... a live version!

#41 'when you walk in the room' - the searchers ...my fav by them, a great uplifting track

#46 'were through' - the hollies ... fantastic track! possibly the best hollies track, melody, beat, harmonies... love it!

1964, The Supremes, The Shangri-La’s, Marvin Gaye, Dusty Springfield, The Ronettes, Millie Small, The Temptations, The Miracles and Little Anthony and the Imperials all appeared at The Fox Theatre, Brooklyn, New York.

that would have been some show!!!!

A lot of good stuff in the charts back in 1964, this was one of my favourites

Zombies - She's not there

This was another I quite liked

Nashville Teens - Tobacco Road

on this day

1964, during a UK tour two dozen rugby players were hired as ‘a human crash barrier’ at a Rolling Stones gig at the Liverpool Empire. The ‘human chain’ disappeared under a wave of 5,000 fans as the Stones took to the stage.

1964, police arrived at a Rolling Stones gig at the ABC Theatre in Carlisle, England, after a trouble broke out with the 4,000 fans at the concert.

1964, during a US tour The Beatles appeared at the Municipal Stadium in Kansas City. The Beatles were paid $150,000 for the show, which was more than any other act had ever been paid for a live show. Tickets cost $4.50.

the only new entry i know is this

interestingly the beatles are only very slowly rising up the charts, and wont top the chart until after 'oh pretty woman', nice to see slow risers..

The longest runner in the chart was "I Love You Because" by Jim Reeves, it has been in the chart for 33 weeks.

Of the future number ones of this year, only Roy Orbison is currently in the top 50, the other 4 are still to chart.

The Beatles were falling after having spent 3 weeks at the top in July/August.

They entered at #3, rising to the top the next week. Hardly a slow riser!

Just checked and apart from Love me Do and Please Please Me, all their singles reached their peak positions within three weeks of appearing on the charts.

Or within 2 weeks, if you check out the NME charts! The retrospective "official" charts compiled by Record Retailer had a strange sales chart week. The NME charts back then tended to see them enter higher and reach number one much quicker. In fact they entered at #1 with a few of their singles, something that only happened once on the RR chart, and that was only after the RR chart had become the official music business chart in 1969 (Get Back being the song).

Is there an online archive of NME charts coz I would like to take a look if there is.

The mindbenders had Eric Stewart in the line up, who wrote a lot of their songs, he would go on to be in 10CC in the '70's.
