The upcoming Beatles remasters could dominate next week's top 20 album chart, it has been claimed.

The studio back catalogue of the Liverpool four-piece is being reissued in full on September 9, with the albums available individually and in stereo and mono box sets.

Gennaro Castaldo at HMV told the Evening Standard: "We feel there's every chance that The Beatles will dominate the top 20 next week, even with only four days sales compared with other artists.

"Chances are Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road will battle it out for the No.1 spot against the current incumbents - the Arctic Monkeys."

He added: "All the albums being reissued next week will comfortably make the top 40, which will create a new record for the official charts."

The BBC will air number of programmes dedicated to The Beatles on BBC Two and BBC Four next week.

I'm not sure if this will happen, but you never know :)

I can't see that happening at all.

Maybe Sgt Peppers might go Top 20; with Abbey Road, The White Album & Revolver in the top 40. But I can't see them challenging for #1.

But I would be delighted to be proven wrong.

They all might make it into the top 100, depends how much you need to sell to reach 100, I don't know. I presume boxsets purchased would not count towards a chart position.
^ Yes, the box sets would just count as one sale of the box set. A shame they can't count as one sale for each of the studio albums.

Why all the negative comments on bj in the chart forum about the Beatles CD's being re-issued, comments like "my worst nightmare", some people are unbelievable. Its not as if the Beatles are banned, if people want to buy albums by the greatest act ever, then it is a free country last time I looked. It comes across as petty minded, actually bring some competition to the current dull charts. Its only a pity the singles weren't being re-released.

I am surprised by some of the more respected posters being of this view ( no names) but you know who you are. :)

10 Albums in the Top 40, after two days sales compared to 5 for all other albums is not bad going.

It's not bad going, but if they don't get a Top 5 album - then it's pretty poor really, especially with album sales so low at the moment.

Why?????

The CD in the 1987 Remasters format have been freely available to buy for the past 22 years, hence anyone expected them to top the charts is far off the mark.

Plus back in 1987 when the original CD's were released their first week sales hardly set the world on fire either, as they had been available to buy on vinyl or cassette for the previous 17 - 24 years.

1987 Chart CD issues UK chart peak:

Please Please Me #32

With The Beatles #40

A Hard Day's Night #30

Beatles For Sale #45

Help! #61

Rubber Soul #60

Revolver #55

Sgt Peppers.. #3

Magical Mystery Tour #52

The Beatles (White Album) #18

Yellow Submarine #62

Abbey Road #30

Let It Be #50

Past Masters Vol 1 #49

Past Masters Vol 2 #46

Hence, these remasters are already doing far better than back in 1987.

Plus Beatles fans are all round more likely to be music fans and historically are less obsessive about collecting music for the format/special edition/limited edition than Elvis or Wacko Jacko fans are/were.

The Beatles' remasters top the charts here, there and everywhere

Beatlemania has conquered the world once again with the Fab Four's remastered albums set to reach No 1 from Liverpool to Tokyo

guardian.co.uk, Friday 11 September 2009 10.06 BST

The Beatles with Alan Livingston

It's 1964 all over again – Beatlemania 2.0 is making its effects felt at cash registers over the world. From Liverpool to Tokyo, buyers are snatching up the Beatles' remastered albums – and even the £170 box sets.

In the UK, the Beatles will dominate this week's album charts based on only one day of sales (plus pre-orders). According to the Official Charts Company, Liverpool's finest will have five albums in the top 20 – and 15 in the top 75 – led by Abbey Road and Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. In their first day on the market, retailers sold more than 6,000 copies of the Beatles stereo box set – helping the expensive package into the UK top 20.

"[The Beatles] are likely to dominate the album charts over the next few weeks and set a new record ... for the most albums in the charts by the same artist at any one time," a HMV spokesperson told Billboard.

In Germany the box set is the top seller for both Amazon.de and internet retailer JPC. German shops are unable to keep up with demand – and EMI is reportedly back-ordered for weeks. "I suspect that EMI did not expect such a boom in Germany and is now having trouble keeping up with demand," a spokesperson for Hamburg's Hanse-CD told Billboard.

It's a similar story in France, where the stereo box set is at No 1 on Amazon, in Canada, where the Beatles occupy the top 15 spots on HMV's charts, and in Japan, where the imported stereo set is HMV Shibuya's biggest seller. "Japan has been hit hard by Beatlemania," said a spokesperson for HMV Japan.

The only sign of weakness is in the much-hyped The Beatles: Rock Band video game, which has not even broken into the top 10 on Amazon.co.uk. Rock Band and other deluxe video games have suffered over the last year due to their high price.

I am pleasantly surprised that possibly 3 and maybe 4 might make the top 10, plus all the others could make the top 40. As you rightly say, anyone could have and probably has already bought the albums either on Vinyl (like me) and CD (like me), and it must be mostly them that are once again buying the new updated version.

I must own up to buying Abbey Road and Sgt Pepper today :)

Irish Charts Top 100 (which captures sales from Friday to Thursday (2 days sales))

- 13 THE BEATLES IN STEREO

- 19 ABBEY ROAD

- 22 SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND

- 28 REVOLVER

- 31 THE BEATLES (WHITE ALBUM)

- 64 RUBBER SOUL

Judging by the UK mids and the Irish charts the stereo boxed set's sales were obviously far more concentrated on Wednesday than the individual albums. Having bough said boxed set on Wednesday I now feel very predictable
