Just Champion! Coldplay star back home for university opening

By Sarah Jones

http://www.thisishampshire.net/display.var...ity_opening.php

IT was with a tear in his eye and a lump in his throat that one-quarter of one of the most famous rock bands on the planet returned to his hometown of Southampton.

Coldplay drummer Will Champion took time out of the award-winning band's hectic schedule to perform a heartfelt honour.

He was invited to Southampton University to officially open a new archaeology building, which holds special significance for his family.

continued...

The musician's late-mother Dr Sara Champion, who lost her battle with cancer in 2000, worked as a lecturer in the department with which she was associated for nearly 30 years.

The connection does not end there as his dad Tim still works in the department as a Professor of Archaeology.

A crowd of more than 100 people gathered at the opening of the new £2m Crawford Building at the university's Avenue Campus in Highfield.

Addressing the audience with a touching speech, Will, 28, said: "I will keep it brief because, as you know, drummers are not best known for their public speaking.

"The last time I was in this building, or I should say the old building, I was picking up a silver medal for a Southampton Schools under-15 trampolining competition. I am convinced it was a fix.

"I am very proud to be here on behalf of my family and my band.

"Growing up as the youngest son of two archaeologists, it is difficult to understate the impact the subject has had on my life, considering even my babysitters were archaeologists!"

The father of a five-month baby girl added that Champion family holidays invariably featured "obelisks, burial grounds and hill forts".

Will recalled working briefly for the university himself as "a penniless 18 year-old" when he assisted with a department relocation.

The avid Saints fan added: "The building seems to encapsulate lots of things my mum held very dear: art, archaeology, technology and people."

Becoming choked and glassy-eyed, he paused to clear his throat and regain his composure and concluded by saying: "It is a very fitting tribute to her and on behalf of everyone here, I can declare it officially open."

A seminar room within the new department has been named in honour of his mother.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, his father Professor Tim Champion, who has worked at the university for the best part of three decades, said: "It is a special day for the family and it is good that the school has invited Will, as somebody who grew up with two parents who were academic archaeologists who worked with the university for a long time, but did not become an archaeologist himself.

"He read anthropology at University College London which is an interest he gained from us but obviously a different career developed for him!"

The new three-storey archaeology department, which features state-of-the-art teaching laboratories, replaces a number of buildings that were spread across the campus.

Gwyneth struggles to lose baby fat

October 12, 2006

http://www.tonight.co.za/index.php?fArticl...=354&fSetId=251

Gwyneth Paltrow has scrapped her strict macrobiotic diet in a desperate attempt to lose her baby weight. The mother-of-two has been struggling to lose the weight she put on before giving birth to son Moses in April and is now following a strict eating programme designed by celebrity health guru Dr Joshi.

A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Gwyneth is really testing her willpower with this one. "She has followed a macrobiotic diet for years and has only recently relaxed rules so she can have dairy products.

"But now Dr Joshi has listed everything she can and cannot have in order to get back to her pre-baby physique - it's scary."

Gwyneth - who is married to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin - is banned from eating wheat, dairy products, tomatoes, peppers, fruit, sugar, gluten and red meat. She is also forbidden from drinking alcohol.

The vegan actress' old diet consisted of fruit, vegetables and grains. The new diet allows her to eat only turkey, chicken, white fish, vegetables and bananas.

Gwyneth - who also has a daughter, Apple, from her marriage to Chris - also has to take herbal supplements to flush out toxins and have regular colonic irrigation, reflexology and cupping treatments.

The source added: "Gwyneth has been wearing corsets to make her appear slightly thinner but she can't wait to bin them when the diet is finished."

Dr Joshi charges £750 for a detox diet and treatments and his other clients include actress Cate Blanchett, British actor Rupert Everett and supermodel Kate Moss.

Gwyneth Paltrow's mother Blythe Danner has revealed her family turned to Coldplay's music to get over the death of her husband.

Blythe has revealed her actress daughter was already emotionally attached to her future husband, Chris Martin's music before they met, because she listened to it while grieving for her director father Bruce.

She told Britain's New magazine: "I think there is something quite deep about their music.

"Weirdly enough, when Bruce died, we were all listening to Coldplay a lot, and then Gwyn and Chris happened to meet. It's really interesting."

The 'Meet The Fockers' actress has also joked that she feels like her son-in-law's "oldest groupie" when she goes to see him perform live - because she is always hanging out backstage with musicians and fans.

She added: "I don't sit in the front row when I go to his concerts, I usually hang out backstage with Gwyneth and Apple. I'm his oldest groupie!"

Coldplay invest in new studio complex

Coldplay are reportedly building a new recording complex at a house in London.

Recent speculation suggested that the British band was on the verge of splitting, but all four members have funded the conversion of a Hampstead property into a base where they can record their follow-up album to last year's X & Y.

A source told The Sun: "The four of them will have all of their band meetings there and they will start writing new material as soon as the studio is finished. It is a sign that the group will be continuing as a band for many years to come."

Coldplay lends hand to local United Way

Wed, October 25, 2006

http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/News/Local/200...123939-sun.html

By JOE MATYAS, FREE PRESS REPORTER

So far, they've turned down multimillion-dollar contracts from the likes of Gatorade, Diet Coke and the Gap for the commercial use of their songs.

But Coldplay, the best-selling British band, is now giving a helping hand to the United Way of London and Middlesex.

Coldplay gave the fundraising agency permission to use the song Fix You in a promotional video for the United Way's campaign to raise $6.85 million for 40 local organizations that help the vulnerable.

"It's not often that a major group will allow you to use an entire song," said Helen Connell, executive director of the United Way. "Usually a short clip is all you get, if anything at all."

The video is a three-minute slide show of black and white photos of vulnerable people that morphs into colour photos in its second half, signifying the hope generated by helping hands.

Made here by Brick House Productions, the producers thought Fix You, a lyrical and melodic tune from the Coldplay's latest album, X & Y, would be the perfect sonic match for photos, Connell said.

"It tells the story in sound."

To get permission, all the United Way had to do was ask, Connell said.

"They have a reputation for supporting social causes."

Winners of two Grammys and major British awards, Coldplay has supported Oxfam, Amnesty International, Live 8, the Teenage Cancer Trust and victims of hurricane Katrina, among others.

In its early years, the band was known for giving 10 per cent of its earnings to charity.

"You can make people aware of issues. It isn't very much effort for us at all, but if it can help people, then we want to do it," bassist Guy Berryman once said.

Lead singer Chris Martin, who is married to actor Gwyneth Paltrow, said the band has avoided turning its songs into commercials because "we wouldn't be able to live with ourselves if we sold the songs' meanings like that."

But the band saw the United Way video and loved it, said Ralph Singh of EMI Music Canada, which records and distributes Coldplay's music.

"They fully support the use of their song in the video," Singh said.

Not only that, said Connell, they've given permission for other area United Ways to use the video to promote their campaigns.

"We're making it available to other United Ways if they want it," she said.

The video is used to promote the campaign during workplace campaigns and to other groups.

Bloc Party Head In Coldplay Direction

by Daniel Zugna - January 8 2007

http://undercover.com.au/News-Story.aspx?id=1235

Bloc Party have admitted their new album bears similarities to Coldplay, as the band attempt to crack the American mainstream market.

'A Weekend In The City' is the follow-up to 2005's post-punk revivalist 'Silent Alarm' debut, with new single 'The Prayer' already signalling a sonic deviation for the four-piece.

Bassist Gordon Moakes told Billboard, "It's got everything that makes a Coldplay song, plus more. It has a lush sound without being too syrupy."

The sound and themes developed on the new album are reported to be more introspective, with vocalist Kele Okerke being more direct with his lyrics.

"I wanted to make something that could be more easily understood, without dumbing it down," the singer said.

'A Weekend In The City' is released in early February.

COLDPLAY ANGERS CHILE WITH HIGH PRICES, POOR ACCESS

http://www.tcgnews.com/santiagotimes/index...010&topic_id=21

(February 14, 2007) The world famous British rock band Coldplay is now in Chile, but the three scheduled concerts in Santiago on February 14, 15, and 16 will largely be a privilege for Chile’s rich. The tickets, which start at US$80 for general admission and go up to US$160, remain out of reach for most Chileans in a country where the average monthly salary is only US$500 a month.

Arriving in Chile Monday directly from London, Coldplay band members were quickly rushed into seclusion at Santiago’s Hyatt Hotel with their support staff of over 25 people. It is unknown if Gwyneth Paltrow, the Oscar-winning actress and wife of Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin, accompanied the band on their trip.

The band’s arrival received widespread press in Chile. Fans gathered outside of the Hyatt to catch a glimpse of the band, and journalists did their best to get interviews from the hotel lobby. As Coldplay has not toured since July of last year, the band’s announcement that they will debut songs from their forthcoming album in Santiago only added to the frenzy.

“We don’t know much about Chile, other than it is pretty and the quickest way to get to Antarctica,†said Martin, adding that his band was happy to be in the country.

Martin did say that he was a bit embarrassed about the high ticket prices. “We just found out how expensive they are and would like to say we are sorry. We didn’t know beforehand,†he said. “The tickets of course could not have been extremely cheap because we are playing smaller venues here, but the price is a little embarrassing. When you are a famous band, a lot of things happen that you don’t know about.â€

When asked what Coldplay would play at the concert, Martin told Chile’s El Mercurio daily that the set list was still up in the air. “It will be good material, whether it is old or new,†he said. “We don’t want to get too excited about the new songs, but rather play Yellow or Clocks (two of the band’s most famous songs). The fans that have tickets will have a great time, it will be familiar material.â€

When asked about the new disc, Martin said the topic was a bit premature. “We are going work with Brian Eno, but we’ll talk about that very soon,†he said. “Maybe there won’t even be another disc, we might just stay in Chile getting fat and drinking wine.â€

While the band mostly stayed in the hotel, a sound check was expected for Tuesday afternoon. The band was also reportedly at the famous Liguria restaurant in Providencia Monday night until 11 o’clock and said they were planning to visit Valparaiso on Tuesday. “We want to try to see the sea, take in a much history as possible, and get drunk,†added Martin.

Coldplay had been expected to meet with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet as ambassadors for the NGO Oxfam, but no visit had been confirmed as of Tuesday afternoon. Bachelet previously met with U2 and Shakira when they were in town but is currently in the south of Chile on vacation.

Press access to the band has been remarkably restricted. DG Medios, the company in charge of Coldplay’s Santiago concerts, repeatedly ignored The Santiago Times’ requests for information.

Coldplay shot to fame in 2000 with the single “Yellow†and subsequent debut album “Parachutes.†Since then, the Brit band has emerged as one of the hottest groups in the world with their albums “A Rush of Blood to the Head†and “X&Y.â€

Coldplay has frequently supported international NGOs including Amnesty International and Oxfam. Martin said he had saved five tickets so that Oxfam members could pass out postcards at the three concerts in Santiago.

The Latin American tour will also take the band to Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico.

Tickets for the Santiago concert still remain, but only those priced for US$120 and US$160. The “cheap†seats quickly sold out. The three concerts are taking place at Santiago’s Espacio Riesco, and tickets can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.cl.

Martin goes geeky over Gwyneth's comic book role

Bang! Showbiz | Friday, 16 March 2007

http://www.stuff.co.nz/images/285025.jpg

Chris Martin has turned into a "big kid" since wife Gwyneth Paltrow landed a role in Iron Man.

The Coldplay frontman is a huge fan of the Marvel superhero and has splashed out on hundreds of copies of Iron Man comics to help Gwyneth research her character.

A source told website Absolute Now: "Chris is like a big kid with this. He's ordered a whole stack of comics which he says are for Gwyneth to help her get into the role but in fact he's spent more time reading them than she has."

The mother-of-two is set to play Virginia 'Pepper' Potts, the executive assistant to Iron Man's regular alter ego, billionaire industrialist Tony Stark.

Gwyneth, 34, will star alongside Robert Downey Jr - who will play the armour-clad hero - in the Jon Favreau-directed film, due to be released in May 2008.

Kevin Feige, president of production for Marvel Studios, said: "Gwyneth is the embodiment of a leading lady.

"She brings intelligence, poise and an incredible range of talent to this role."

Timbaland Signs On For New Coldplay Project

Producer to meet with band in April

LOS ANGELES, CA Friday Mar.23.2007 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- Coldplay is bringing in super-producer Timbaland to help create the sound for band's fourth album.

NME reports that Timbaland will going to the UK in April to meet the band.

The producer told GQ Magazine that he's not going over there with any preconceived ideas about what the album will sound like. He said, "I try to get into their heads, see what they're thinking about. I just try to figure out how they are feeling.

"And if they are feeling a certain way, I go by that. It's more about everyday life - then it (should) be about music."

Coldplay is also working with Brian Eno at their studio in North London.

Chris: That put me In My Place

http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,4-2007150214,00.html

April 03, 2007

COMMENT ON THIS STORY

THERE is nothing sweeter than a school bully getting his comeuppance.

So imagine just how special it was for CHRIS MARTIN to bump into the man who once made his classroom days a misery.

The tables couldn’t have turned more emphatically for the COLDPLAY frontman since his days as a pupil at Sherborne School.

The booky class swot hadn’t seen his nemesis for ten years, during which he had been transformed into a multi-million-selling household name with an army of fans.

Oh — and he was with his stunning, Oscar-winning Hollywood actress wife GWYNETH PALTROW.

That’s going to hurt more than Chinese burns, having your tuck stolen or your head pushed down a flushing toilet.

Chris said: “I bumped into a guy who used to give me hell at school. He was a bully who always said I wouldn’t make anything of myself.

“I had great pleasure asking what he was up to now. He wasn’t up to much. Then I turned around and said, ‘This is my wife Gwyneth.’ His face dropped and he looked really embarrassed.

“It was a proud moment. I’m not one to get my own back and look for revenge — but that was pretty sweet.â€

Singer Chris, whose hits include In My Place and Fix You, was terrorised as a boarder at the posh private school in Dorset.

He has admitted in the past that he was painfully shy, timid and geeky.

His obsession with music left him isolated from the in-crowd, making him a target for bullies.

He added: “I wasn’t the happiest at school. I was good at sport because I was a decent athlete but I was quite geeky. I was a bit of a swot and just wanted to do music.â€
