I will be revealing the results (today).

#21 The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire) 22 POINTS (8 votes, 1 5th place)

- Nat King Cole (1946) (covers by Christina Aguilera & Celine Dion, amongst many others)

Lyrics:

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose

Yuletide carols being sung by a choir, and folks dressed up like Eskimos

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe (will) help to make the season bright

Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow will find it hard to sleep tonight

They know that Santa's on his way, He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh

And every mother's child is gonna spy to see if reindeer really know how to fly

And so I'm offering this simple phrase, to kids from one to ninety-two

Although it's been said, many times, many ways: "Merry Christmas to you."

Nat King Cole

Christina Aguilera (1999 US#18)

#20 Walking In The Air (31 POINTS, 7 Votes 1 1st & 1 3rd)

- Peter Auty / Aled Jones

"Walking in the Air" is a song written by Howard Blake for the animated short The Snowman, which has been broadcast on TV and published on videotape and DVD; also released as a single, LP and CD. In The Snowman, it was performed by a St. Paul's Cathedral choirboy, Peter Auty. The song was released as a single, reaching number 5 in the UK charts, sung by Welsh chorister Aled Jones.

In the second part of The Snowman story, the boy and the snowman fly to the North Pole. The song "Walking in the Air" is the theme for the journey; they attend a snowmen's party, at which the boy is the only human. They meet Father Christmas and his reindeer, and the boy is given a scarf with a snowman pattern.

We’re walking in the air

We’re floating in the moonlit sky

The people far below are sleeping as we fly...

The song was so popular that a parody version of it was used in a British television commercial -- the Christmas 2006 Irn-Bru advert in which the slightly edited song tells the story of a boy and a snowman flying though Edinburgh, over Loch Ness, and over Glasgow before The Snowman drops him into the snow near George Square due to the boy not giving the snowman a taste of the drink.

#19 Peace On Earth / Little Drummer Boy (36 Pts, 10 votes 1 1st)

- David Bowie & Bing Crosby

"Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" is a medley of two traditional Christmas songs performed by David Bowie and Bing Crosby.

The track was originally recorded for Crosby’s 1977 television special Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas. The pair exchanged stilted dialogue about what they do for Christmas before singing a medley of two traditional songs, "Peace on Earth" and "Little Drummer Boy". Crosby is mildly humorous and at ease, and seems to out-perform Bowie. Bowie's appearance has been described as a "surreal" event, undertaken at a time that he was "actively trying to normalise his career". He has since recalled that he only appeared on the show because "I just knew my mother liked him." Crosby would die just over a month after recording the special.

The medley was available for some years as a bootleg single backed with "Heroes", which Bowie had also performed on the TV special. In 1982, RCA issued the recording as an official single, complete with the dialogue, arbitrarily placing "Fantastic Voyage" from the Lodger album on the B-side. Bowie was unhappy with this move, and it was the final straw of his strained recent relationship with RCA. The single would make #3 in the UK charts, boosted by a 12" picture disc release, and has since become a perennial on British Christmas compilation albums, with the TV sequence also a regular on UK nostalgia shows.

#18 Stop The Cavalry (38 POINTS, 11 votes, 2 3rds)

- Jona Lewie

"Stop The Cavalry" is a song written and performed by the musician, Jona Lewie.

The song charted at number 3 in the UK Singles Chart in November 1980. The song was never intended as a Christmas hit, but the line 'Wish I was at home for Christmas' as well as the brass band arrangements made it an appropriately styled song to play around Christmas time. The song appears to be set at the front during a war in which the UK participated, although references to Winston Churchill, the Russian Tsars and a "nuclear fallout zone" mean that its exact chronology is uncertain.

Hey

Mister Churchill comes over here to say we're doing splendidly.

But it's very cold up here in the snow marching to and from the enemy.

Oh

I say it's tough I have had enough

can you stop the cavalry.

I have had to fight almost ev'ry night down throughout the centuries

That is when I say

oh yes

yet again can you stop the cavalry.

Mary Bradley waits at home in the nuclear fallout zone

Wish I could be dancing now in the arms of the girl I love.

Lum a-lum a-lum lum lum a-lum a-lum lum lum lum a-lum lum

(a-lum a-lum)

Lum a-lum a-lum lum lum a-lum a-lum lum lum lum a-lum lum

(a-lum a-lum)

Wish I was at home for Christmas.

Bang! There's another bomb on another town while the Czar and

(Jim have tea)

If I get home

live to tell the tale I'll run for all Presidencies.

If I get elected I'll stop

I will stop the cavalry.

I have had to fight almost ev'ry night down throughout the centuries

...

Lum a-lum a-lum lum lum a-lum a-lum lum lum lum a-lum lum

(a-lum a-lum)

Wish I could be dancing now in the arms of the girl I love

Mary Bradley waits at home

she's been waiting two years long.

Wish I was at home for Christmas.

#17 Christmas Wrapping (43 POINTS, 9 votes, 2 2nds)

- The Waitresses

"Christmas Wrapping" (sometimes misspelled as "Christmas Wrappings") is a Christmas song performed in 1981 by The Waitresses and later covered by the Spice Girls (on the 1998 CD single of Goodbye).

The song is sung from the point of view a busy single woman who is adamant that she will try to sit-out the exhausting Christmas period. She reveals that, during the course of the year, she has attempted to meet up with a man she encountered in a ski shop the previous year. Despite the couple's attempts to meet, a succession of mishaps conspires to keep them apart.

Finally on Christmas Eve, while the protagonist (after stating that A&P provided her with "the world's smallest turkey") is doing last-minute shopping for cranberries at a local convenience store, ends up running into the man after discovering that he, too, forgot to buy cranberries.

This coincidence seems to hint that she shouldn't completely abandon her faith in the magic of Christmas.

NO VIDEO

Lyrics:

"Bah, humbug!" No, that's too strong

'Cause it is my favorite holiday

But all this year's been a busy blur

Don't think I have the energy

To add to my already mad rush

Just 'cause it's 'tis the season.

The perfect gift for me would be

Completions and connections left from

Last year, ski shop,

Encounter, most interesting.

Had his number but never the time

Most of '81 passed along those lines.

So deck those halls, trim those trees

Raise up cups of Christmas cheer,

I just need to catch my breath,

Christmas by myself this year.

Calendar picture, frozen landscape,

Chilled this room for twenty-four days,

Evergreens, sparkling snow

Get this winter over with!

Flashback to springtime, saw him again,

Would've been good to go for lunch,

Couldn't agree when we were both free,

We tried, we said we'd keep in touch.

Didn't, of course, 'til summertime,

Out to the beach to his boat could I join him?

No, this time it was me,

Sunburn in the third degree.

Now the calendar's just one page

And, of course, I am excited

Tonight's the night, but I've set my mind

Not to do too much about it.

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!

But I think I'll miss this one this year.

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!

But I think I'll miss this one this year.

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!

But I think I'll miss this one this year.

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!

But I think I'll miss this one this year.

Hardly dashing through the snow

Cause I bundled up too tight

Last minute have-to-do's

A few cards a few calls

'Cause it's r-s-v-p

No thanks, no party lights

It's Christmas Eve, gonna relax

Turned down all of my invites.

Last fall I had a night to myself,

Same guy called, halloween party,

Waited all night for him to show,

This time his car wouldn't go,

Forget it, it's cold, it's getting late,

Trudge on home to celebrate

In a quiet way, unwind

Doing Christmas right this time.

A&P has provided me

With the world's smallest turkey

Already in the oven, nice and hot

Oh damn! Guess what I forgot?

So on with the boots, back out in the snow

To the only all-night grocery,

When what to my wondering eyes should appear

In the line is that guy I've been chasing all year!

"I'm spending this one alone," he said.

"Need a break; this year's been crazy."

I said, "Me too, but why are you?

You mean you forgot cranberries too?"

Then suddenly we laughed and laughed

Caught on to what was happening

That Christmas magic's brought this tale

To a very happy ending! "

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!

Couldn't miss this one this year!

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!

Couldn't miss this one this year!

Stop the Cavalry, I've got that, very Christmasssy, I do like Nat King Cole's version of Chestnuts.... better than the rest.

#16 Baby It's Cold Outside (45 POINTS, 13 votes, 1 3rd)

- Tom Jones & Cerys Matthews

"Baby, It's Cold Outside" is a pop standard with words and music by Frank Loesser. Loesser the wrote the contrapuntal duet in 1944 and premiered the song with his wife at at their Navarro Hotel housewarming party. The female voice in the song is called "The Mouse" and the male "The Wolf." The tempo of the tune is published in at least one version as a "Loesserando," giving humorous reference to the composer.

In 1948--after years of informally performing the song at various parties--Loesser sold its rights to MGM, which inserted the song into its 1949 motion picture, Neptune's Daughter. The film featured two performances of the song: one by Ricardo Montalbán and Esther Williams and the other by Red Skelton and Betty Garrett. These performances earned Loesser an Academy Award for Best Song.

The song has been recorded by numerous other artists over the years, including Jo Stafford (1956); Sammy Davis, Jr. and Carmen McRae (1957); Dean Martin (1959); Oliver Reed and Joyce Blair (1962); Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews ( 1999), Alan Cumming and Liza Minnelli, Ray Charles and Betty Carter (1961); Ann-Margret and Al Hirt; James Taylor and Natalie Cole (2004); Barry Manilow and K. T. Oslin (1990); Rod Stewart and Dolly Parton (2004), and Wheat (band) and Liz Phair (2004); Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey (2004). On "Saturday Night Live" NBC on 10/11/1986, the song was featured as a duet sung by Sigourney Weaver and Buster Poindexter. It was also featured in the 1991 movie For the Boys sung by Bette Midler and James Caan. Due to the wintertime lyrics, the song is often played during the Christmas season; in 2003, it was featured in the holiday-themed film Elf sung by Zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone. In 2006, the song was reissued on the album Christmas with Dino, this time as a duet by Dean Martin himself with Martina McBride, whose portion was recorded and mixed at the Los Angeles Capitol studio used by Dean for his 1959 version.
