I think the BBCs problem was timing (being on a Friday night) and it had some weird underground vibe which I don’t think particularly sold it very well. If they chose a Sunday evening they could have revived some of that X-Factor live show performances vibe and had the singles/albums run down, the latter feeding that nostalgic Sunday chart show. It’s also probably the one time of the week most people would actually sit in and watch TV vs a Friday night. I honestly think if done right they could successfully reboot a modern version of TOTP. I’d argue there’s an appetite for it more than what people think there is.

It's been touched on but I agree, I think there's just a lack of visualisation anymore of the charts and a who's who of the music world at the same time. We've gone from having TOTP, CDUK and other music promotion shows to nothing, X Factor as pretentious as it was, did sort of step in for TOTP for a while and helped launch successful singles/eras but that ran out of stream and also went. Another major nail in the coffin I think was getting rid of the Sunday evening chart show, which in my mind was a British staple as a lot of my family would listen to it back then and argue about who they thought was deserving of the top spot. Additionally I think for anyone who does follow the chart but isn't as involved as everyone on here is, probably don't understand the concept of a song being No.1 for 8-9 weeks and then suddenly dropping to No.10 because ACR has kicked in. There's very little transparency from the OCC on any rules to the general public and its not really mentioned in the chart show.

I think they'd wait until after Rein Me In is finally booted from No.1 for good before they change it but, I don't think they will as its a mess of their own creating really with ACR not doing what it should do. Allowing songs to dodge going to ACR is the key issue, it's meant to stop songs having lengthy runs in the top 10 and instead we've actually had more songs spend 20-30 weeks there than before it was introduced. Yes there might need to be rule to help freshen things up, however as it stands, its very poorly executed and also overly complicated imho.

I reckon Madonna is probably going to get close to 50k when streaming is added even if it’s not super huge, I reckon she’ll have decent numbers still. Is there anything that could stop Rein me In having a 17th week next week?

I think this proves why variants should be banned from the charts, people get all catty about it even though they go out an do the exact thing they complain about.. It's just all very desperate in my eyes regardless of who it is. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't represent anything really, especially in the streaming era and its certainly not an achievement worth recognising.

Not sure why but I keep reading Bebe in a Moria Rose accent in my head 😅. So is Olivia’s total of 85k from Monday? Impressive if so as I thought 50/60k would be where it opened.

I think the most weeks at No.1 on the singles chart will go to Wham unfortunately at some point, its just a question of when (unless they change rules). Christmas songs aside though I think something new beating 18 weeks is a longshot but I wouldn't entirely rule it out RMI has shown that songs can keep dodging ACR for months on end, again unless they change the rules. Most consecutive No.1 singles be a female artist I can't see being broken due to how songs are released these days, although Sabrina came close to equalising. Same with No.1 singles off an album, I think nobody has had more than 3 recently (Sabrina and Ed). There's some bigger records I can't see being touched like fastest selling single/album also.

Janet and Bon Jovi are the ones that stand out to me as they’ve had several notable hits. Janet especially as he’s had at least five or six top 3 hits? I went with Depeche Mode also as I always had the impression they had a strong (although not huge) fan base and that they must have got a quick No.1 somewhere. It’s odd they never had a top 3 hit tbh. Led Zeppelin is another I almost went for as again they were such a legendary rock band you’d have thought they would have had one somewhere.

Yeah I tend to agree with this, her global success is fairly recent, but those four markets have always been where her career success has been most consistent/biggest (especially the US). I feel she will change tactic more toward singles going forward as that seems to have been the case since she started the latest era with multiple variations/cds/vinyls. I was personally expecting slightly bigger first day streams in the UK for her new one. Will be interesting to see how it holds up though the next couple of days.

Yeah agree it’s almost gone too far the other way now but the download era was a nice middle ground.

Steps’ Tragedy was another one that unusually stuck around for 5-6 weeks before climbing to No.1 too. Although I guess all saints did something similar a year earlier. How do I live was another one that’s not been mentioned that sat around for a while but never managed the top 5. Growing up in the late 90s I remember always being puzzled when records were broken for the most no.1 debuts etc as I had no other concept of how the charts were. I do miss going to Woolies or Asda (as ours had a huge music section) and seeing the singles chart as it was usually a good indicator of how the Sunday chart would look. Also buying the odd single here and there. The only thing I didn’t like was that if a song you liked debuted at a relatively low spot you had to just accept that was it and it wouldn’t improve not to mention the high No.1 turnover at some points got very boring.

I’d be surprised if Taylor isn’t >900k on the first day on Spotify. Although I tend to agree, I can’t see it holding up but then again folk/country pop seems to be in favour the last couple of years. The bar is low for No.1 I think she has an easy chance to get there with physicals if the streams do fall off.

Thought Mel might have got past Kneecap by now, at least the top 3 is on lock and a best ever peak wise on the albums. It’s not a bad album either.

Noah could potentially nudge just past 50k in the albums by Friday especially if his streaming numbers continue to hold. Shame Doors is just outside the top 10, I need to have another listen of the album, I feel it’s a grower.

Oh nice! I must admit I was expecting Noah to drop a lot more so I’m chuffed to see it’s holding up well. Maybe Doors could clinch a top 20 spot at least this week, hopefully it’s enough to keep the album ahead of the foos too.

By removing older hits you allow more chance for new music to break into the chart though, which is one part of the issue I would say. I think another factor which I thought of the other day aside from the compilation of the chart itself, is there’s no platform to promote music from, like we had in previous generations. Ok there’s tik tok but I don’t think it’s something you can bank on for breaking out a song. In some ways I feel we’ve gone back to that 70/80s format of where songs climb gradually over a few weeks and artists take at least a couple of eras to breakout into mainstream success (Olivia/Sabrina/Sam) but unlike then there’s nowhere for anyone to get strong consistent promo. I think we need something of a cross between TOTP and the X Factor live shows (but not so cheesy and full of lip syncing) to help give songs/artists a push as if it’s done in the right way I think it would work.

Hope Titi Me Pregunto holds in the top 20 till Friday, such a bop that totally passed me by in 2022 but been obsessed with it the last week. How many weeks has reign on me had in the top 10 now? Must be close to 30 surely? I do like it but it is a bit crazy it’s now heading to no1 after all this time.

Amazing for Bad Bunny, I do love DtMF it’s the first song of his I liked. I’ve since become obsessed with some of his older hits since the Super Bowl. Love to see it doing well, would be happy if it went to No.1 on the singles chart.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s intentional so she can try and sneak a week at No.1 in the US. Bad Bunny has probably thwarted a chance of her doing it this week following his Super Bowl performance.

I think there needs to be two charts, a singles chart only and a songs chart that incorporates everything without any rules. Once a song has been charting for say a year or 18 months it gets removed from the singles, but likewise if an album track gets pushed as a single it can transfer across. Additionally and quite controversial perhaps I think AirPlay is needed for the chart in the absence of people buying records. Unlike the US it should be a select bunch of stations that focus on playlisting new music routinely and it only has a short duration to the chart like a couple of months so it doesn’t get stale. I think record labels would jump at this as a way to push something up the charts and make things more competitive. ACR also needs to be changed so that the drop isn’t so harsh for one and secondly there shouldn’t be any dodge rules, like give them 12 weeks to peak and then if it’s made the top 10 then that’s it. No resets or second reruns unless it’s going to actually repeak, if a song still manages to hang around for months in the top 10 as it’s that big then so be it. Albums are also a mess, a lower ratio for streams and remove the downweighting rules. The greatest hits don’t need removing, the problem is the occ double count any streams from any act toward a greatest hits even if it’s not even been listened to so that just needs to stop. Also soundtracks should be brought back into the albums as well.

Was surprised at how well Noah started on day one but glad to see it. Hasn’t clicked with me yet but hope he manages to nab a top 10 placing this week, seems to have stabilised reasonably well after the initial drop.
