OCC: "We will look into the way charts are compiled"
I wouldn't be surprised if they change the streaming ratio to 1:200 but it'll probably come next year. Not sure why they didn't just have it for this year.

iTunes Weekly Thread W/C 10th March 2017
Steps No.1 on iTunes!? Never thought I'd see the day  Amazing achievement for them though, 20 years since their first hit. If they get some decent promotion the next couple of days they could perhaps scrape the top 20 of the official chart.

Kaiser Chiefs follow on swifly behind with their second and so far highest charting single following Stay Together which peaked at no.4 a few weeks back. Elsewhere The 1975 claim their 12th chart entry, with all of their previous entries reach the top five with four having gone all the way. Following on behind are Kings of Leon with their 5th chart entry and first since Beautiful War in December 2013 which peaked at No.5. Their biggest charting song remains Comeback Story which logged four weeks at no.1 in October 2013. The Weeknd makes a return to the chart with the funky I Feel It Coming. It becomes his 4th chart entry following his collaboration with Ariana Grande on Love Me Harder (No.3 - 2014), I Can't Feel My Face & The Hills (No.s 7 & No.4 in 2015). Daft Punk also make their first appearance on the chart since 2013 this week. Following the entries of Touch (No.7) and their chart topping smash with Pharrell Williams, Get Lucky, which went on to become the second highest chart point earning song of 2013. Finally Katy Perry makes her first ever appearance on the chart, along with Skip Marley, with the politically charged, Chained to the Rhythm.

The Indigo Chart
Hey JSG, Many thanks! Glad you like the chart :) I agree Castle is far superior to Shape, It just sounds brilliant especially when travelling on the train/car. But yes I don;t think Shape sounds like a song that has been no.1 for 6/7 weeks on the official chart at all, I can see Castle being remembered more fondly in later years. Apart from Ed, most of those songs took a while to grow on me (as do most songs), particularly the Chainsmokers only started liking that towards the end of the year.

The Indigo Chart
I've been compiling a personal chart since 2012 but decided to finally start posting it on here. (Sorry its late for last week haven't had chance to post it up). Basically my chart consists of the songs I'm currently enjoying but also listening to. The six sum figures are the weekly units which are complied from a mixture of points allocated to that chart position and the number of times I've listened to the song. So here's my first chart personal chart post on here, hope you enjoy my very random chart :D T H E / I N D I G O / S I N G L E S / C H A R T W/E 17th February 01 01 Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill / 60,000 / [01-01-02-03-01-01-01] 02 06 Sam Hunt - Body Like A Backroad / 49,000 / [06-02] 03 02 Ryan Gosling - City Of Stars / 48,000 / [03-01-01-02-02-03] 04 03 Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone - Lovely Night / 46,000 / [04-03-02-03-04-04] 05 05 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You / 35,000 / [02-02-04-05-05-05-05] 06 NE Maroon 5 (ft Future) - Cold / 34,000 / [07] 07 03 Lady Gaga - Perfect Illusion / 33,000 / [09-08-06-06-05-06-12-13-16-14-15-15-17-18-19-19-xx-18-20-xx-xx-15-03-07] 08 06 James Blunt - Love You Better / 32,000 [06-04-04-06-08] 09 17 Lady Gaga - John Wayne / 31,000 [17-09] 10 NE Ed Sheeran - How Would You Feel / 30,000 [10] 11 08 Big Little Town - Better Man / 19,000 [14-10-06-05-06-06-08-11] 12 10 Arizona - Oceans Away / 18,000 [01-01-01-03-05-07-08-08-10-12] 13 12 The Chainsmokers (ft Halsey) - Closer / 7,000 [16-07-05-04-03-02-02-03-06-09-10-10-10-11-13] 14 11 Rag & Bone Man - Human / 6,000 [15-11-06-05-08-09-09-09-11-14] 15 14 Passenger - If You Go / 5,000 [10-07-04-04-07-11-12-12-12-14-15] 16 15 Thomas Rhett - Star Of The Show / 4,000 [05-05-09-08-09-12-05-03-02-08-12-12-13-13-15-16] 17 13 Galantis - Love On Me / 3,000 [12-09-08-06-05-06-10-11-11-11-13-17] 18 NE Imagine Dragons - Believer / 2,000 [18] 19 18 Maroon 5 (ft Kendrick Lamar) - Don't Wanna Know / 1,000 [07-04-04-07-07-04-04-02-01-03-05-07-12-14-14-15-16-18-18] 20 19 Robbie Williams - Pretty Woman / 500 [01-01-01-01-01-02-06-08-09-11-13-13-14-14-16-20] I've decided to trial out an Albums chart as well. Will 'held-back' singles ever happen again?
I really hope it doesn't come back again I mean the charts are slow but its down to streaming, however it is a more reflective tool of what songs are actually popular. Held back was fine during the 90s because most/all single releases were eventually dealt with that way but when downloads came along and being able to cherry pick a song off an album as soon as the next single was announced it removed that element and gave held back releases an unfair advantage. I'm hoping streaming may kill that horrible element to the charts off as i really don't see (how they can/the point of) holding back streaming a single, plus i don't want to see another 2014 or 2000 again when nothing managed more than 7 days at no1. The biggest irony of held back releases is the record labels are the first to moan about illegal downloading and loosing sales but by making people wait 2 months to download a song whilst its being played on the radio they cant be surprised people go elsewhere.

Most well-known songs that have never been #1
The Flood by take that is another one from them that I think people would generally think was a no.1 hit, still don't know myself how it failed it was a sure fire no.1 hit. Robbie's had a few other hits I'd argue that people think have been no1 but Feel and Let Me Entertain You are probably the main two, aside from Angels. I think from this decade we've had a lot of massive songs that haven't reached the top yet you'd think they would have; Kesha - Tik Tok Gaga - Born This Way Pink - Give Me A Reason Passenger - Let Her Go Bastille - Pompeii Taylor Swift - Shake It Off/ I Knew You Were Trouble Labrinth - Earthquake John Legend - All Of Me George Ezra - Budapest

What was/is your most enjoyable period of the charts?
I have two favourite periods of the charts, 1998-2000 and from 2008-2013. I used to love the big chart battles in the late 90s and the big inflated first week sales. Also only being a child at the time to me it wasn't always obvious who would be no.1 or know how the chart was trending during the week, apart from the Christmas no1. The christmas charts though were my favourite, between 1998 and 2000 we had a string of really competitive christmas chart battles with everyone who was big at the time chucking a song out and the whole top five would usually shift around 100k each and although 98 and 99 were quite predictable 2000 certainly wasn't. The only downside was the manipulation of the chart was to an extent that it became difficult for anything to be no.1 for longer than a week or two and meant a lot of songs that were growers would never be able to climb much further than the top five. But generally sales were pretty good (apart from 2000) and the charts just exciting to follow due to their always being a big release every couple of weeks. But I'd have to say the download era just about outdoes the 90s for me, the charts were more accurate and reflective of popularity and id argue they still are now but streaming has made them incredibly static. I loved how songs didn't get given a shelf life and could climb the charts at any point and that songs started climbing to no1 after a few weeks of steady rising up the charts, especially when OA/OS kicked in for a few months. But even more so i loved how huge single sales were especially having had the disappointing sales of the 2000s it was really refreshing to see them hit the highs of the 90s again, albeit over longer time periods.

Streaming | General Discussion
At the risk of dragging up a further heated discussion on streaming I've been looking into the royalty rates the past few years and trying to understand the whole streaming thing. As many said the ratio last year was far too high and I agree. When looking at the typical payout rate from Spotify last year, from what I can see it was around 0.004/5, Apple is higher at 0.007. But for some bizarre reason they decided to keep with the 0.01 revenue (1:100) which is completely inaccurate and explains partly why sales were so stupidly inflated last year. (I wont go into the playlists and other issues surrounding it) I did some very rough calculations basing last year on the 0.007 rate and if that had been the case for last years charts, Drake's total sales would have been around 1.6 million compared to the almost 2 million that chart credited him with having and Cheap Thrills on around 1.1 million with Lukas Graham probably being the only other million seller. This seems a more accurate reflection of sales imo when you compare to the 2010-2013 period given downloads were still contributing a relatively decent amount of sales last year. If i knew how to get an accurate amount of streams from every song during 2016 then I'd try and compile a proper list. From what I can tell this years royalty rates haven't really changed very much and even though the OCC have finally dropped it based on a 0.0075 rate I think its still a little too high and 0.006 or 0.0055 would be better placed (ratio of 1:200), which would mean a song that is streamed 100 million times would generate revenue or sales of around 550-600k and with downloads added would probably push totals up to around 800-1000k or so (obviously depending on how much its downloaded). As streaming continues to grow I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing most typical hits having this sort of level of streams with the big hits having around 200-300 million in the UK alone. I may have go some of the revenue figures mixed up so apologies if they are but it was just to give a rough idea.

iTunes Weekly Thread W/C 6th January 2017
Wow insane lead for Ed, both cracking songs do slightly prefer Castle. Think both songs will do 100k easily on downloads this week based on the current Kworb numbers. I can both of them reaching no.1 at some point.

Has 2016 been the worst year for UK top 40 in its existence
Yes I have to agree this year has been terrible for both music and the charts. There has been a recent uptick in music diversity in recent weeks I'd argue but streaming has smoothed that out pretty efficiently in the charts with some fantastic songs just not managing to make any impact at all. I think the industry just needs time to adjust to the new changes and when it does it may liven up a little bit. But we are overdue a new genre craze/theme as its just been EDM/Dance orientated for the past 5 years and its becoming very tired, although the tropical influenced stuff is a little more bearable. I think the 2009-2013 period was the best we'd had in a long while and most interesting due to singles sales shooting up, plus there was a little bit more variety.

Robbie Williams - Heavy Entertainment Show
Have a mixed view of the album whilst I generally like it overall, its not as good as his classic first five albums, but better than Take The Crown which I think was a good album plagued with poor single choices. Pretty woman is an absolute corker, how an earth this wasn't the lead single i'll never know as it could have had a chance at no.1. Also really like Hotel Crazy, especially the film quotes, "the only thing they should be checking out, is my ass" almost spat my tea out the first time I heard it.

Is the streaming conversion rate too generous?
Its a difficult topic I find with regards to streaming, as I personally think they should put a cap on individuals streaming songs rather than the general population as realistically nobody goes out an buys the same song 3-4 times (unless its a boyband ect) and thats how the streaming sales look to me. But on the other hand if download sales were non-existent then the streaming sales would be very accurate. So I can see why its been set the way it has, the problem is download sales are still fairly reasonable so we are having very inflated sales and weekly sales, plus songs are having inflated streaming amounts due to playlists ect. I'd agree this year and even the past couple are up there with some of the worst years for music, although this year seems to be waking up at last but its still awful. But not just talking about pop music i think all genres other than dance or edm have been killed off since 2014 and everything sounds the same imo. I think this is also the problem with the chart, there just isn't enough good music or variety around and the music industry just seems to be grinding to a halt. Im sure the charts will go back to being more fluid but it may take a couple of years for record labels/management and the general public to adjust to the new change (plus some better music :P )

Robbie Williams - Heavy Entertainment Show
After a few more listens its grown on me quite a lot. I can see this being a slow burning hit with it gradually becoming popular.

Robbie Williams - Heavy Entertainment Show
Hmmm not sure what to make of Party Like A Russian. Sounds alright till it gets to the chorus, the sample doesn't work at all. Know idea how this will perform, its not anywhere near as catchy as Candy. Bad Mother****** would have been a better lead single or Sensational

Slightly annoyed Robbie's released the new song today its going to be hard for it to get to the top 10. Much better than any of his last few singles though, very classic Robbie

I really hope he hasn't just re-written H.E.S as thats my favourite song thats he's done in recent years, but this already sounds a million times better than Candy did when I first heard it. Quite excited! :D

Is the album format dying?
I think cherry picking has a lot to answer for. You can now simply just download the songs you like from an album if your a casual fan. Also I think we are in an era where singles are just more popular and easier than ever before to buy/listen to. Plus whilst the download era saw single prices drop by nearly 2/3 albums haven't really followed suit, most new albums still cost around £10 which was around the same price they were before downloads came in, as soon as an album is put at half price on iTunes they get a boost in sales, sometimes increasing by serval thousand copies.
-
How can the OCC change the chart?
I must admit adding streams as sales as made singles sales go stupidly high. This year could see maybe 15-20 songs shift 1 million units which is ludicrous. I think they need to change how streams are added to the singles chart; Firstly the song has to be played in full to count towards the chart. Secondly there should be a cap in place so that a song is capped at 100 streams permanently. Finally only once a song has been streamed 100 times should it be counted as a chart sale. This would see sales drop but it would be more accurate and would create a faster moving chart with it becoming easier for more songs to reach the top 10. There's a lot of mess as well imo of how singles and albums are formatted which is going slightly off topic (apologies) but if I were a recording artist I certainly wouldn't allow my album to have the songs be allowed to be cherry picked or put on streaming services but would sell it in its entirety and reduce the price. A lot of people have said previously it would create a drop in single sales, but given streaming is the new main source for that it can be easily done with little impact. Adele has proven this given her recent strategy and has had 2 top 10 hits of an album that at the time had sold over 2.5 million units.
-
Drake v Bryan Adams v Wet Wet Wet
I agree that I think the last 3-4 weeks it was no1 One Dance was only there by default but its streaming has remained constantly high. The other thing with One Dance its been more of a streaming hit than a song that people would download like Lean On and What Do You Mean, it cleared 5 million stream for 8 weeks which no song has managed yet not even Adele or Bieber. So its first 10 maybe 11 weeks I'd argue it was no1 outright. I think the song probably didn't deserve its 15 weeks at no1 but it's likely that Love Is All Around and Everything I Do stayed at no1 by default for several weeks also. Whilst I think the streaming figures are slightly inflated and they should have a cap, they do represent what is popular and One Dance was the most popular song of those 15 weeks due to lack of big releases towards the end. I can see Cold water managing 4 weeks at least maybe 5 given that August is usually quiet.

Head of Radio 1 proposes chart shake-up
Adding airplay would be a terrible idea we'd have songs being no.1 for an average of 5-6 weeks probably longer and they would be more stagnant then they are now. I must admit they are kind of boring at how slow they have been the past month but then again there's not exactly tons of killer hits or big songs that have been released during that time so people have kept listening to the same stuff. The music industry itself has gone rather stale and boring and has been for the past couple of years and the charts reflect that imo. I think with regards to streaming that it should be counted differently where its based on individual peoples streams so when someone streams a song 100 times it then no longer counts towards the chart as thats equal to one sale. The problem with that is I guess it would take most people weeks to reach that milestone so sales would be more spread out over a longer period.
