Julian ranks the #1s of 2003
Blimey there some awful number 1s in 2003. Cannot argue with the ones out so far, though not sure the rank would be exactly the same as mine. Like others, I really like Sneddon’s Don’t Let Go, shame it wasn’t his number 1.

Was it? I never knew that!! I am going to conveniently ignore that then to avoid a R&J bottom 4 l

14. Cher, Chrissie Hynde, Neneh Cherry & Eric Clapton – Love Can Build A Bridge 1 week at number 1, March For the talent on display here for 1995’s Comic Relief single and for Neneh Cherry’s only UK number 1, my god this is DULL. What a wasted opportunity.

Jester’s rank of 1995 number 1s
15. Outhere Brothers – Don’t Stop (Wiggle Wiggle) 1 week at number 1, April They were a duo from Chicago which combined rap with dance. Not as well known in the USA as the UK oddly. This was everywhere before it was released and the 'wiggle wiggle' shoutback gave it the edge it needed to hit the top spot. I can’t deny that this is catchy, but I find the vocals very strained (especially on the live TOTP reruns) and the whole wiggle wiggle bit makes me feel oddly annoyed. I can see the appeal but I just don’t like it.

I ranked both sides. Both are terrible but one less terrible.

Jester’s rank of 1995 number 1s
17. Robson Green & Jerome Flynn – Up On The Roof 4 weeks at number 1, November/December Insipid cover that they didn’t even sing. Terrible. This double A side (second side to come) kept Oasis’s Wonderwall off number one. Let that sink in. This kept one of the most famous songs of the 90s off the top spot. Wow.

Jester’s rank of 1995 number 1s
18. Robson Green & Jerome Flynn – Unchained Melody 7 weeks at number 1, May/June/July Let’s start with the worst number 1 of all time, although the biggest seller of the year. YAY. They were convinced to record this monstrosity by Simon Cowell after they ‘performed’ it on Soldier, Soldier. There is so much wrong with this, where do I start?! Lets begin with the fact that they didn’t truly sing their own songs. Uncredited vocalist were brought in for the pair of them to cover the higher parts (and worryingly some of the lower parts). No wonder Milli Vanilli were annoyed when this was revealed. I must say it was suspected at the time as they never sang live once on TOTP. Frauds. Secondly, the uninspired heap of shite kept the era defining Common People by Pulp off the top of the charts in its 7 (!!) week run at number 1. No wonder this set up Simon Cowell to inflict similar horrors on us in years to come. Awful, awful, awful. Both are great actors by the way, a case stay in the right lane please.

Jester’s rank of 1995 number 1s
Right, Starting this now :) I have ranked 18 UK number 1 singles from 1995. I have missed off East 17's Stay Another Day as I have decided it is a 1994 number 1 so will be rated in due course. One of the Robson & Jerome songs was a double A side so I ranked both sides. Lets start with the worst number 1 of the year....

90s Top 10 Sales- Week by Week- 1998
Horny is kind of clever - double meaning with all the horned instruments in the song. C’est La Vie is such fun pure pop, so joyous! The Boy is Mine is superb, shame no TOTP performance. Glad Feel It eventually got to number 1 - loved it at the time!

Djo - The Crux
Very Beatles-esque

Tame Impala - Deadbeat
Loving Loser! Djo though

I agree (even though I have all the 12” singles)! I’d have laid more for a 5th LP with b-sides, but I hope for a future RSD Pulp b-side album instead.

Yes, got the one with the sticker set too! Pricey, but worth it. I’d like cardboard cut out shape stickers in the style of Mis-shapes!
