Chart Battle Rewind: Leona Lewis vs Take That
Voted for 'Rule The World' one of Take That's very best songs... they were unlucky to run into such a juggernaut. McFly were also at #3 for one of these weeks (with 'The Heart Never Lies') and this exact combination of artists had been top 3 in 2006 as well... what a fun fact

Julian rates every 21st century Top 40 hit
Catching up on the last two sections... 🩷 'Get Me Off' is a quirky, layered banger as per usual from Basement Jaxx *.* I recall reading that the song was originally intended for Janet Jackson, so would've been interesting to hear her take on it too. Agreed that it deserved better in the chart! I remember 'Hot In Herre' from the time but was definitely too young for those lyrics it has aged well anyway... that Neptunes production is suitably sizzling. 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out' has emerged as my favourite Heathen Chemistry single now, definitely one of their best 2000s songs overall I agree that it shares similar lyrical DNA with 'Don't Look Back In Anger'. It's a refreshing vocal delivery from Liam and I love how the instrumentation progresses within the piano intro, drums and outro riff. I vaguely remember Bill & Ben being a thing but don't recall the song. Those verse melodies are reminding me of 'Livin' La Vida Loca'! It's like Bob the Builder having a crack at that. I'm not a huge fan of Taylor Dayne's voice so prefer the Kelly version by default. My clubbercise instructor recently added that cover to our exercise class playlist, the impact. The version of 'I'm Gonna Be Alright' that I know is the one Rich mentioned with the same sample as 'I Got 5 On It', unfortunately that does most of the heavy lifting. I know times have changed (still pretty recently - Iggy's 'Fancy' and Eminem's 'Rap God' got away with it a decade ago off the top of my head) but I hate hearing the r-word slur in a song. I watched Preeya Kalidas' entire stint on EastEnders at the time (2009 - 2012) but my knowledge of her singing was limited to 2010's 'Shimmy' (got some music channel airplay and was sent to BJSC five years later in my debut contest ) and her feature on Skepta's 'Cross My Heart' (Shakespeare has been awfully quiet since "I never had a pen but I made a mark") for years. 'Shakalaka Baby' only entered my life two months ago while watching a TOTP-style 'Eastenders Sings at the BBC' programme for the 40th anniversary and it is admittedly an earworm Crazy that Amy Studt's team waited an entire year to follow up 'Just A Little Girl' unlucky that Avril swooped in during that interim. 'Baby's Got A Temper' is a rare Prodigy miss for me but thankfully their next chart stint is a triumph and one I did follow at the time 🥰 I wasn't familiar with 'American English' until it popped up in a competition on here (I'd like to say favourite non-top 10 hits of the 2000s or something), a good'un indeed. Cool for Gary Numan to have his own modern chart moment post-'Freak Like Me' as Rich mentioned - but also after being sampled in 'Where's Your Head At' the previous year! I wasn't familiar with this specific song and your assessment was correct - I'm rather into its dark and twisted sound on first listen 🖤 I feel like I should be into Red Hot Chili Peppers more than I actually am, judging by people with similar taste on here, but 'By The Way' is fantastic and their best song for me! Nice top pick - 'Clubbed to Death' is an iconic, atmospheric piece of music

no tears left to cry • 1st Single
Today marks 7 years since this was released! 🩵 Loved this ethereal sound for Ari and it's cool that she's been leaning more into that space again with some of her recent work. I got to see her live in 2019 and her performance of this was my favourite moment of the night.

Your favourite songs performed by a minor(s)
Just remembered that two of my favourite retro Eurovision winning songs were performed by under-18s! Gigliola Cinquetti - 'Non ho l'età (per amarti)' won for Italy in 1964 when she was 16 years old: Then the following year France Gall was victorious at 17 years old with 'Poupée de cire, poupée de son', representing Luxembourg:

#SlayberryTop50 REVAMPED - w/e 04/11/2025
Issa Knife #1! almost a snap chart-topper as the original made #1 for me, but the remix stalled at #2, still the combined power of both came out on top for my points-based EOY last year *.* Great to see the beautiful 'twilight zone' on the rise 💙 and Miley's new one is pretty cool as well so taste with that highest debut.
