BBC One is starting 2016 BIG with it's 'new adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s timeless novel', War and Peace. 'Three young people experience life, love and loss against the epic backdrop of Russia’s wars with Napoleon.' It is written by Andrew Davies, directed by Tom Harper and stars Paul Dano, Lily James, James Norton, Rebecca Front, Jim Broadbent, Aneurin Barnard, Gillian Anderson and Stephen Rea.
Tonight sees the first part of six episodes that will be broadcast each Sunday night.
Episode 1:
Russia, 1805. Napoleon Bonaparte's French army has invaded Austria, drawing Russia into the war against him. Everyone in aristocratic Russian society is rattled - except hot-headed Pierre Bezukhov, who admires the French emperor's politics. Pierre is an outcast in society, and the illegitimate son of one of Russia's wealthiest men. But now his father is close to death and his scheming relatives are vying for the old man's fortune - though they expect Pierre to be left with nothing.Pierre's dearest friend Prince Andrei Bolkonsky is excited for war with Napoleon. For him it offers a chance to find purpose in life by fighting on the front line. Unhappily married to a beautiful socialite, Lise, he plans to leave her behind at his fierce father's remote country estate and seek military glory for himself. The army under Andrei's wise mentor General Kutuzov expects a swift victory. But when the French unexpectedly prove their military might, Andrei is thrust into a dangerous battle.
Pierre's other great friend is Natasha Rostova - a beautiful, lively young woman growing up fast and desperate to experience more of the world. When she sees love blossom between her brother Nikolai and his childhood sweetheart Sonya, she is inspired for the first time with romantic thoughts of her own. As the men ride off to war, Natasha and Sonya are left behind to wait and wonder if they will ever return.

...I think. Its been as hard as ever trying to organise this as I adore all of them and the lines are more blurred the higher up the chart. Its been particularly hard this year as I haven't done a personal chart so I've done my best to remember all the more obscure songs I've loved this year.
I wish I had time to do proper countdown with commentary but sadly I don't so at least its all there in one go. I've tried to limit it so that there's just singles there as I've not been very good with albums this year so it wouldn't be as well reflected as it could have been.

erm, not really sure what to think of that episode. I kinda wish Steven Moffatt would stop flitting between time frames so often within an episode/overall though. I do often enjoy it but it becomes very tiring when it occurs so often in his writing. It starting to becoming more refreshing to have a linear storyline with no sudden jump cuts to a different point in time. I got annoyed when it cut back to the waterfall.
So that whole things ties in with my biggest thought which was explained by Dandy:
It was a major concern of mine throughout Series 3 that the actual mysteries didn't have the right focus on them and that's what I was enjoying for the first half of the episode here. Then it was spoiled for me by forcing it within the overarching storyline. For a series that barely has any episodes, has such a long time span in between them, I don't get the need to have such an overarching story. Yes, there needs to be character developments and such but I think the show has really suffered for me with this special and the whole of Series 3 in that we haven't had a full-blown mystery episode and so that is basically spanning FOUR years.
I wasn't the biggest fan of having a Victorian special but the way it was handled with inserting the modern day bits ruined what could have been a really great, spooky special for me.
