90s Top 10 sales- Week By Week- 1997
Perfect Day is such nostalgia. Takes me back to a very happy time. I’ve been loving the 1997 TOTP the last month or so-I have such vivid memories of these episodes! Really looking forward to 1998 kicking off.

EastEnders
I couldn’t quite bring myself to feel sorry for Jean. Everything Harvey and Kathy said to her was correct. Of course, they shouldn’t have cheated but she took Harvey for granted and this wasn’t a recent thing. He spent more time looking after Charli than anyone else even when he was working. Jean never appeared grateful at all for anything he did. Even when she spoke to Kathy she referred to him as if he were her property and that’s not a healthy relationship. I love how it’s backfired on Cindy. Even immediately after her taunting Harvey, he turns up a Kathy’s door and they’re clearly feeling free and happy. The only person she’s hurt is Jean, who never did anything to her.

lol how on Earth did Harvey and Kathy not notice Cindy stood there bold as brass?

EastEnders
Lacey going is always a blow but it just reminds me of the feeling that killing Martin was a mistake. This is the second time a love interest of Stacey’s has been killed off because they wouldn’t leave Stacey/the kids only for Stacey herself to be gone within the year. I don’t believe they didn’t know Lacey was thinking of going.

EastEnders
I mean, Denise had just slapped Carmel in that scene and really that should have been the duff duff, even Carmel leaving was dramatic. But they lingered to watch he pour the pasta and it became iconically bad. There were so many awful stories and cliffhangers at the time that this just became the pinnacle of it all. People had been screaming for Denise to dominate the screen for years and she was-but frustratingly so. Entire episodes dedicated to her studying for one GCSE, refusing everyone’s help so that she could eat out of bins acting too good for a food bank. It was a mess. The one story she’d had that was interesting at that point was being pregnant to Phil. The idea of her becoming a mother again late in life to the man she despised the most-that could go somewhere. But she quickly adopted her baby out so that interesting scenario was gone. Later ridiculously put right so that she could get Raymond back years later.

When did you start paying attention to the UK charts?
My brother was into the charts first and I remember starting watching Top Of The Pops on Fridays in late 96 and also the Chart Show on a Saturday morning. In early 97 I started listening with my brother to the Radio 1 chart show and I followed it then for almost 20 years. 2015 is when I completely stopped listening to the chart show. They were getting slower with streaming and I just didn’t have time to listen on a Friday night (I’ve always maintained that they didn’t NEED to move the time and day of the chart but people will always argue that with me) as I was 26 and was usually busy on Friday nights. Over the next few years, there was less and less music I liked in the top 40 that I barely even pay attention any more.

Now That's What I Call Music! [Part 7]
I’m surprised Texas didn’t make the main one or the extra with I Don’t Want A Lover.

EastEnders
I neither like nor dislike the new Vicki. I haven’t seen her enough to make any impression at all. Agreed that Ross and Joel have already done a better job integrating. Sharon being missing is an issue and I’m assuming it wasn’t necessarily planned give the abrupt departure and the clunky rewriting so that Vicki can support Zack on issues she knows nothing of, but it’s very like when Dotty was recast and June Brown just left immediately. Cindy is a broken record. Her main story was in the 90s and I agree she’d have been better just turning up every now and then to cause trouble. That’s what they should have done instead of killing her off. She doesn’t work as a regular character.

EastEnders
Ngl, didn’t miss Cindy at all whilst she was gone. Kathy is still not believable as the attacker and Cindy’s shocked face when Lauren’s waters broke was camp af. What are they actually going to do with her now? She’ll be the hero of the birth until she ends up in the same old patterns. I remember voicing concern when her return was announced that beyond the shock factor, there’s very little to do with Cindy. I do worry Nicola Mitchell will find herself in a similar spiral.

Big Songs That Were Ineligible For The Charts
Hunter charted. Do you mean All You Want? I remember it getting airplay late 2001/early 2002 but I always wondered why it never charted.

At least they’re giving Felix someone though even if it is too little too late. The nightmare would have been immediately pairing Johnny with Callum even though Felix was right there.

Chart Battle Rewind: Spice Girls vs Martine McCutcheon vs Ricky Martin
Martine. Great very underrated pop song. Ricky. Fun but not as good for me. Spice Girls. Absolute let down. LLLTW was uneventful and Holler was ok but it wasn’t them. No surprise to see them leading here though.

UK Local Elections 2025
Did you demand better from the last Tory government or were you happy to accept their efforts? Honestly, I’m really interested to hear.

UK Local Elections 2025
I mean, I can’t say that I’ve loved this Labour government so far but I’m much more interested in examples from you about what the last Tory government were actually doing better?

Maroon 5 & LISA - Priceless
I wish I could still get excited about Maroon 5 music tbh.

Celebrity Traitors UK • Series 1
It’s amazing to see a list that impressive. I’ll need Stephen Fry gone soon as though. I like everyone else.

Chart Battle Rewind: Oasis vs Rihanna
Oasis-it was their best single for some time. Rihanna’s was decent but not a stand out for me. In fact, it felt very like a one hit wonder from the off which is amazing to think now. If I recall, Pon de Replay was initially no.7 or something in the first midweek update? I seem to remember it climbing to no.2 in the next one and people being surprised as movement that abrupt midweek was pretty rare at the time.

The UK and transphobia
That’s not good enough though? Why spend time trying to court people who will NEVER vote for him? Even his comments today have been heavily criticised by the TERFs who aren’t content with their supposed ‘victory’. It was a LONG 5 years between general elections and it felt longer because this Labour shower kept courting right wingers. I was adamant I would vote Labour because we needed to get the Tories out and he kept making that so difficult. In the end, I couldn’t do it-partly down to comments he made about trans people just before the election and mainly because this Labour Party showed their colours when it comes to Wales. I didn’t vote for them in the end and I’m quite glad I don’t have it on my conscience. Apologies, I’ve been pretty angry about this all day. I haven’t forgotten how awful the Tories were and I can’t be having with reform. But this Labour Party was supposed to be about change and it feels like they’re just playing to the usual loudmouths. I remember ‘Kier has to say these things, he’ll become more liberal once he’s in’ and though some things they’ve done well, this hasn’t come into force.

The UK and transphobia
I wish I could be shocked but this has pretty much been the Labour government I’ve come to expect. They’re so scared of loudmouths who will never be pleased by anything they do yet keep pandering to them. Instead of using the five years to make a difference, they’re too focused on the next election already. Anyone with an issue with trans people clearly doesn’t know a trans person. I’ve taught quite a few trans students and, quite honestly, the other students mostly don’t care and are supportive. Whenever you do hear anything, it’s usually something that’s been parroted from home. I remember one boy telling me he ‘didn’t agree with it’ in one breath and saying he was fully supportive of the trans girl in his class in the next. And they say it’s the teachers that are indoctrinating children…

Death of Pope Francis & election of new Pope
Did you attend a Catholic school at a time a former Pope died? Going off your date of birth, probably when you were very young in primary school? I expect it would be a big deal in Catholic schools. I briefly attended one and one of my teachers had a shrine to Mother Theresa after she passed so I imaging the passing of the Pope would be a big deal. RIP to Pope Francis. I’m Catholic on paper but not practising but he always seemed very progressive and kind. He will be missed.

Surprised to see Complete leading, such a forgotten gem.
