TaraElla 2013 Top 100
10. Hailey Rowe - My Boyfriend Is Gay Weekly Chart Peak: #2 One of the most surprising hits of the year, the very funny My Boyfriend Is Gay, by newcomer Hailey Rowe, was kept out of the top spot by the longest running number one this year. Still, it made a big impact on our pop music landscape this year. It comes with a really funny video too. I know this is not 'classic material', and would likely be seen as 'bad music' by many of you, but it's really lots of fun, isn't it? 9. Colbie Callait and Gavin DeGraw - We Both Know Weekly Chart Peak: #1 This song is from the Safe Haven Soundtrack, and it debuted back in January. I knew it would go far in the yearly countdown even back then. Colbie Callait is no stranger to the top spot in our weekly charts, but it's her best performance yet in a yearly countdown. Meanwhile, it's Gavin DeGraw's first number one. Elsewhere out there, this did not seem to be a big hit. I really don't know why. 8. Nina Nesbitt - Way In The World Weekly Chart Peak: #1 Nina Nesbitt, a newcomer to our charts in 2013, shoots straight for a position in the top 10 with her hit Way In The World. Again, this was not as popular elsewhere out there, as evidenced by its failure to make the official UK top 40. I also remembered that throuhgout the period it was in the top 3 on my charts, it was not on any other top 3 here. It's yet another mystery to me why this wasn't big everywhere, like it should be. But with only ONE of my top 10 being a major international hit this year, it's something that I'm bound to say over and over again. A bit of trivia here: this is the last non-USA song in this year's yearly countdown. That means we have an all-American top 7, the first time this has happened in the 12 year history of the countdown. 7. Jeff Marx - You Have More Friends Than You Know Weekly Chart Peak: #3 Jeff Marx and Mervyn Warren co-wrote this modern classic, debuting on a show about the It Gets Better movement last year, and Jeff released his own version as a single this year. The release co-incided with Glee doing a cover version. The thing I like most about Jeff's version is that the vocals have feeling - something quite lacking in many songs out there today. 6. Kree Harrison - Crying Weekly Chart Peak: #1 A 1960s classic that has been covered again and again over the decades, Kree's version in American Idol this year has been one of the best I have heard. This performance and others like it quickly cemented Kree's place as season favourite for me. It's a shame she did not win, really. 5. Janelle Arthur - The Dance Weekly Chart Peak: #1 Janelle Arthur was somewhat overshadowed by fellow country singer contestant Kree Harrison in my view throughout the series, but for me this all changed when she did The Dance. It was the performance of the season in my opinion. Sadly, she was eliminated soon after. Some trivia: this is the last American Idol 2013 entry. 4. Melissa Benoist and Darren Criss - All Or Nothing Weekly Chart Peak: #1 I have never been a big fan of Glee originals, as they are often overly cheesy even for me, but this one was different. As a bonus, it featured the vocals of Melissa Benoist, my new favourite actress and singer on the show. At initial release it was kept to a peak of #3 by strong competition, including another Glee entry, but it remained on our radar for a long time, almost as if asking for another fair shot at the top spot. Its time finally came when the yearly countdown preparations were heating up, and on re-entry in November it went to #1. 3. Katharine McPhee - Beautiful Stranger Weekly Chart Peak: #1 Katharine McPhee is no stranger to our charts, and she has had a yearly #1 (It's Not Christmas Without You, 2010), and yearly #2 (My Destiny, 2006) in the past. Therefore, this #3 means that she has been in the top 3 for three different years already, something achieved previously by no other artist. 2. Macklemore ft. Mary Lambert - Same Love Weekly Chart Peak: #1 And now, the biggest hip-hop song ever to grace our charts! And the topic: none other than my top political passion for a decade, marriage equality! I never imagined somebody would make a song about that and how such a song would be popular at all, let alone it being a hip-hop song, but this was how it turned out to be. On my charts, this was initially slow to climb up the charts, debuting at #17 in January when it was already #1 in Australia's ARIA countdown. A few weeks later, during a major milestone for marriage equality in the UK, it shot straight up to #1. It peaked again at #1 a few weeks later. Throughout the year, it remained on our radar, and right now in December it is still in the top 40 (re-entering after dropping out for a while however), which is truly spectacular. Although this song did not make the #1 this year, it has certainly broken all hip-hop related records on this chart. So in a sense it really is a number one. As the fight for marriage equality continues in the new year, it will remain an anthem for years to come. 1. Melissa Benoist and the Glee Cast - You Have More Friends Than You Know Weekly Chart Peak: #1 Although Same Love did break many important records, even more record breaking is this year's number one, the Glee version of You Have More Friends Than You Know. It is officially the biggest song since Raining Sunshine in 2009, and the biggest yearly #1 song ever (Raining Sunshine, A Moment Like This, I'm Not A Girl Not Yet A Woman etc all built up their record over years). It is also the longest running #1 ever, at 15 weeks, eclipsing the 8.5 week record of Raining Sunshine in January 2010. It is also the only song ever to have nine lives at #1, i.e. to have 9 separate runs at the top spot. Just like the #1s of 2011 and 2012, this one is also a cover. However, the original debuted in 2012, so it's not like the other two years where a 70s cover won. It's still a 'modern song'. And it's officially the fifth year running where my #1 of the year did not enter the top 100 in any country's official chart. Nobody seems to like my favourites. I guess I will never know why
