Girls Aloud - What Will the Neighbours Say?
01. The Show – 10/10 The album opens in almighty style with roaring acid synths that’s instantly synonymous with the Girls Aloud name as well as marking a step forward in their evolution. The track brims with creativity with its fuzzy electro basslines, pulsating beats, quirky lyrics, and stylish production which ensures that this lead single is as catchy and memorable as hell. This fun colourful and upbeat anthem was the perfect showcase for their new direction. 02. Love Machine – 10/10 Swapping out the synths for bass and guitars for this catchy yet unconventional number. The catchy guitar riffs, frantic beats and fantastic vocals are wonderfully paced and gives everything a raw and sexy to it thanks to the slick production. One of Girls Aloud’s very best and signature tunes in their stellar discography. An iconic pure pop masterpiece. 03. I’ll Stand By You – 7/10 Slowing things down with this rather nice and tender ballad that became the album’s 3rd single. A cover of the 1994 hit by The Pretenders and doesn’t really stray too far from the original or anywhere that interesting, it just kinda wafts along with some stunning vocals. This is an okay cover version but feels a little too safe and doesn’t compare to the greatness of the first 2 singles. 04. Jump – 8/10 Another single that feels very oddly placed on here, given that it featured on the special edition version of their debut album. This is another cover version – this time originally sung by The Pointer Sisters back in 1984 and the girls do at least give a credible stab at it, with growling synths, fuzzy synths, catchy beats and solid vocals. Definitely one of their better cover versions of their careers. 05. Wake Me Up – 10/10 Back on form now with this harsh yet brilliant electro pop rock number that’s packed with energy and sass with its thrashing metal guitar riffs, throbbing beats and twinkling synths before switching to a more playful tone for the verses and then ramping things up again when it comes to the rousing chorus. This rightfully became the 4th single and stands as one of the Girl’s most brilliant and yet underrated singles. 06. Deadlines & Diets – 8/10 A really nice and chilled out mid-tempo R&B pop number with soulful vocals and warm acoustic guitars that weaves in and out beautifully amongst the soft beats. The lyrics and catchy verses do elevate this track somewhat and gives everything a nice chilled out vibe. 07. Big Brother – 7/10 The dreamy soundscapes and crunchy electro bass lines gives this track a cool mysterious vibe to it and the vocal harmonies are strong on here, but the chorus feels very lacking and undercooked. As an album track its decent enough. 08. Hear Me Out – 8/10 This is a lovely little electro ballad that marks a welcome change of pace with some wonderfully low bass synths, soft seductive vocals and gorgeous percussive beats that gives this a rather elegant sound. 09. Graffiti My Soul – 10/10 A firm standout moment with its interesting sampled acoustic guitar riff into before the funky beats and stuttering basslines kicks in and keeps the pace flowing nicely. Fun, upbeat, loose, and yet at the same time totally all over the place and lacking any sort of chorus, but that’s what’s so great about it, even the girls spoken verses and rapping adds another layer of weird greatness to this quirky number. One of Girls Aloud’s greatest album tracks for sure. 10. Real Life – 8/10 A fun catchy upbeat number with frantic pacing, strong melodies, great lyrics, and fantastic vocal performances from each of the girls. 11. Here We Go – 9/10 This opens with a 60’s bossa nova style with breathy vocals with twangy guitars before the rousing chorus kicks in and heads into a more pop/rock style and then it switches back for the verses. This is a fantastically catchy number that really takes you another place in time. A fun standout moment for sure. 12. Thank Me Daddy – 7/10 The stabbing synths are back again until the electro pop beats kick in for the verses. This is quite catchy during the chorus, but it does feel very much like album filler material. 13. I Say A Prayer For You – 6/10 A stunning soft ballad sung entirely by Nicola Roberts. Her vocals are delicate, as she sings softly over the gorgeous piano and strings. She gives a solid performance here, but this isn’t something I’d go back too very often when revisiting this album. 14. 100 Different Ways – 6/10 Ending the album with yet another slow plodding ballad that does have a nice warming feeling to it but doesn’t go anywhere interesting production wise or vocally. This & the previous track weren’t really needed on here as this is the definition of bonus filler material.

Do you feel me now? LOZuxwVk7TU 1. Toxic | 10.0 Highest Scores: 11: (Nina West, Jade, Nick F1, One For Sorrow, Nick Jonas, Mack), 10: (spiceboy, Anita Hanjaab, Jessie Where, Slayer, TimConArtist, JLJ, GTH, blacksquare, Pandamic Tension, Chapman. Roba, Scene, Eduardo, Scene), Lowest Scores: 8: (ready for it, Herbs) There you have it Buzzjack your #1 Britney single is Toxic, released in January 2004 as the 2nd single from Britney's 4th studio album In The Zone. Written and produced by Bloodshy & Avant, with additional writing from Cathy Dennis and Henrik Jonback. It was initially offered to Kylie Minogue for her album 'Body Language', but she turned it down. The song features varied instrumentation, such as drums, synthesizers and surf guitar. It's Bollywood strings are sampled from Laxmikant–Pyarelal's "Tere Mere Beech Mein" (1981). The original single choices were between "(I Got That) Boom, Boom" & "Outrageous", but Britney selected 'Toxic' instead. Upon release it received acclaim from critics, and became a huge global smash hit by topping the charts in 11 countries, including Australia, Canada, Hungary, Ireland, Norway & in the UK, as well as top 5 peaks in a further 15 countries such as New Zealand, Sweden, France, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland & Spain. In the USA it became her 4th top 10 hit there by reaching #9, and became her first top 10 hit there since 'Oops I Did It Again' in 2000. The song won Best Dance Recording at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards, marking the first Grammy win of Britney's career and has become one of her signature songs and is widely cited as among the most influential and innovative songs in pop music. The song has been included in multiple all-time lists of best songs, including by Pitchfork, NME and, in 2021, was ranked among Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Britney has revealed that this is her favourite song in her catalog. This was pretty much the winner from the start, I mean just look at that average 10.0 a perfect score for a perfect song & I would love to thank everybody whose taken part in this rate & made it a massive success. To think that the song's writers thought that this was too weird to be a hit, but thankfully they were proven wrong. Hearing this for the first time back in 2003 I knew it was something special, even if it was quite far down the tracklisting at #6, quite baffling when you think about it. Well anyway the production by Bloodshy & Avant is top notch by combining many elements that should not work - into a timeless pop masterpiece that even to this day still sounds fresh exciting and yet at the same time captures that time period perfectly. Everything about this pop classic is fantastic down to the twangy guitars, frantic techno beats & those classic high pitched string melodies are just sublime with Britney's etheral vocals sitting on top of everything beautifully. This is Britney's greatest achievement in pop music no question & a well and truly deserved winner choice.

My weakness caused you pain 8YzabSdk7ZA 2. Everytime | 9.937 Highest Scores: 11: (JLJ, ready for it, Tafty, Roba, Herbs, Scene, Eduardo), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Jade, Jessie Where, Slayer, Nick F1, Nick Jonas, blacksquare, Mack, Chapman, Lukuzz), Lowest Scores: 8/8.5: (Anita Hanjaab, TimConArtist, pippa, Pandamic Tension) At the runner-up spot is Buzzjack's favourite (& mine) favourite Britney ballad Everytime, released in May 2004 as the 3rd single from Britney's 4th studio album In The Zone. Written by Britney herself & her background singer Annet Artani & produced by Guy Sigsworth. After her relationship with Justin Timberlake ended in 2002, she became friends with her background singer Annet Artani. They started writing songs together at Britney's house in Los Angeles, and then travelled to Lombardy, Italy, where they collaborated on this track. Upon release it received universal acclaim from music critics, & commercially became a global success by topping the charts in Australia, Hungary, Ireland & UK, and reached top 10 peaks in 16 other countries such as Canada, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Denmark & Switzerland. In the USA it reached a #15 peak on the Billboard charts, becoming her 11th top 40 hit there. The music video's cinematography was inspired by the 1995 movie "Leaving Las Vegas" & was directed by Dave LaChapelle. The original concept had Spears kill herself from a drug overdose, but that part of the plot was removed after it received criticism from organizations such as Kidscape, who perceived it as a glamorization of suicide. This track was one of the first songs finished for the album & Britney named this & 'Touch Of My Hand' as the most personal songs on the album. This was at the #3 spot for much of the rate, until it got a slew of 11 scores & overtook 'BOMT'. In-fact this song ended up scoring the most 11 scores & in the end was only 1.5 points behind the winner. Haunting and yet heavenly at the same time this stunning pop ballad has a fragile tenderness to it with its echoed pianos, lullaby production & breathy vocals. Yet at the same time this doesn't follow the conventional pop ballad route, thanks to its stripped back instrumentation & lack of studio trickery creates something well & truly incredible & perhaps dare I say it, her best vocal performance of her career. Heartfelt & emotional, everything about this packs an almighty punch & so glad we got to experience this as a lifelong Britney fan. A very risky choice to follow a global #1 smash hit, but thankfully the fans & general public mades this masterpiece an unlikely smash hit. There's nothing in Britney's extensive back catalogue quite like this & that's what makes this so special.

Give me a sign C-u5WLJ9Yk4 3. Baby One More Time | 9.729 Highest Scores: 11: (TimConArtist, Nick Jonas, Mack), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Anita Hanjaab, Jade, Slayer, Nick F1, One For Sorrow, JLJ, GTH, ready for it, blacksquare, Tafty, Chapman, Roba, Eduardo), Lowest Scores: 8/8.5: (Pandamic Tension, Herbs, Scene, Lukuzz) Coming in at #3 is the one that started it all Baby One More Time, the debut single by Britney Spears released in September 1998 from her debut studio album of the same name. Written by Max Martin and produced by Martin and Rami. Britney had originally been envisioned as a "Sheryl Crow music, but younger more adult contemporary", but after spending about 6 months working on material, she hadn't heard any hits, until she started working with Max Martin in Sweden & heard the demo for this track which was then titled "Hit Me Baby One More Time" & the rest was history. The song was actually written for Backstreet Boys & TLC, but they both rejected it. The label thought the song would work for the English group Five, but they also passed on it. Britney felt very excited for it, but other executives were concerned that the line "Hit Me" would condone domestic violence. The title was revised to "...Baby One More Time". Upon release it became a worldwide sensation, topping the charts in more than 20 countries worldwide, including the USA & UK, where it earned quintuple and triple-platinum certifications from each country. Respectively it was the UK's best selling single of 1999 & has been named as one of the best selling singles of all-time , with over 10 million copies sold. In 2020, Rolling Stone named "...Baby One More Time" as the greatest debut single of all time. In 2021, the song was ranked at number 205 on the list of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Britney was only 16 years old when this was recorded & has stated that this was one of her favourite songs in her back catalogue along with "Toxic" & "He About To Lose Me". Bet this result will shock some of you, a song of this magnitude settling for a #3 spot, but look at that 9.7 average though, that would be a winner in most other rates. Throughout most of the rate this was in the runner-up spot, but got overtaken by a slew of 11 scores by one of the other entries. Iconic, legendary, influenciial, for any upcoming artist take notes THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE AN ENTRANCE. Without us even knowing it at the time Britney's debut single became an event, despite arriving 6 months after its American release, the buzz was already deafening & will change your lives forever. A little dramatic there I know, but this song is just so incredible with its easily relatable message delivered with the right amount of sass & set to thrilling pop instrumentals such as drums patterns, guitars & pianos all hitting the right tempos at just the perfect moments, along with the funky beats, sizzling synths that compliments Britney's distinctive vocals beautifully & then there's that explosive euphoric monster chorus that pops in all the right ways. Each of theme elements delivers an almighty pop masterpiece for the ages & even after more than 20 years this juggernaut of a pop song still sounds incredible.
