My weakness caused you pain 8YzabSdk7ZA 2. Everytime | 9.937 Highest Scores: 11: (JLJ, ready for it, Tafty, Roba, Herbs, Scene, Eduardo), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Jade, Jessie Where, Slayer, Nick F1, Nick Jonas, blacksquare, Mack, Chapman, Lukuzz), Lowest Scores: 8/8.5: (Anita Hanjaab, TimConArtist, pippa, Pandamic Tension) At the runner-up spot is Buzzjack's favourite (& mine) favourite Britney ballad Everytime, released in May 2004 as the 3rd single from Britney's 4th studio album In The Zone. Written by Britney herself & her background singer Annet Artani & produced by Guy Sigsworth. After her relationship with Justin Timberlake ended in 2002, she became friends with her background singer Annet Artani. They started writing songs together at Britney's house in Los Angeles, and then travelled to Lombardy, Italy, where they collaborated on this track. Upon release it received universal acclaim from music critics, & commercially became a global success by topping the charts in Australia, Hungary, Ireland & UK, and reached top 10 peaks in 16 other countries such as Canada, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Denmark & Switzerland. In the USA it reached a #15 peak on the Billboard charts, becoming her 11th top 40 hit there. The music video's cinematography was inspired by the 1995 movie "Leaving Las Vegas" & was directed by Dave LaChapelle. The original concept had Spears kill herself from a drug overdose, but that part of the plot was removed after it received criticism from organizations such as Kidscape, who perceived it as a glamorization of suicide. This track was one of the first songs finished for the album & Britney named this & 'Touch Of My Hand' as the most personal songs on the album. This was at the #3 spot for much of the rate, until it got a slew of 11 scores & overtook 'BOMT'. In-fact this song ended up scoring the most 11 scores & in the end was only 1.5 points behind the winner. Haunting and yet heavenly at the same time this stunning pop ballad has a fragile tenderness to it with its echoed pianos, lullaby production & breathy vocals. Yet at the same time this doesn't follow the conventional pop ballad route, thanks to its stripped back instrumentation & lack of studio trickery creates something well & truly incredible & perhaps dare I say it, her best vocal performance of her career. Heartfelt & emotional, everything about this packs an almighty punch & so glad we got to experience this as a lifelong Britney fan. A very risky choice to follow a global #1 smash hit, but thankfully the fans & general public mades this masterpiece an unlikely smash hit. There's nothing in Britney's extensive back catalogue quite like this & that's what makes this so special.

Give me a sign C-u5WLJ9Yk4 3. Baby One More Time | 9.729 Highest Scores: 11: (TimConArtist, Nick Jonas, Mack), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Anita Hanjaab, Jade, Slayer, Nick F1, One For Sorrow, JLJ, GTH, ready for it, blacksquare, Tafty, Chapman, Roba, Eduardo), Lowest Scores: 8/8.5: (Pandamic Tension, Herbs, Scene, Lukuzz) Coming in at #3 is the one that started it all Baby One More Time, the debut single by Britney Spears released in September 1998 from her debut studio album of the same name. Written by Max Martin and produced by Martin and Rami. Britney had originally been envisioned as a "Sheryl Crow music, but younger more adult contemporary", but after spending about 6 months working on material, she hadn't heard any hits, until she started working with Max Martin in Sweden & heard the demo for this track which was then titled "Hit Me Baby One More Time" & the rest was history. The song was actually written for Backstreet Boys & TLC, but they both rejected it. The label thought the song would work for the English group Five, but they also passed on it. Britney felt very excited for it, but other executives were concerned that the line "Hit Me" would condone domestic violence. The title was revised to "...Baby One More Time". Upon release it became a worldwide sensation, topping the charts in more than 20 countries worldwide, including the USA & UK, where it earned quintuple and triple-platinum certifications from each country. Respectively it was the UK's best selling single of 1999 & has been named as one of the best selling singles of all-time , with over 10 million copies sold. In 2020, Rolling Stone named "...Baby One More Time" as the greatest debut single of all time. In 2021, the song was ranked at number 205 on the list of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Britney was only 16 years old when this was recorded & has stated that this was one of her favourite songs in her back catalogue along with "Toxic" & "He About To Lose Me". Bet this result will shock some of you, a song of this magnitude settling for a #3 spot, but look at that 9.7 average though, that would be a winner in most other rates. Throughout most of the rate this was in the runner-up spot, but got overtaken by a slew of 11 scores by one of the other entries. Iconic, legendary, influenciial, for any upcoming artist take notes THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE AN ENTRANCE. Without us even knowing it at the time Britney's debut single became an event, despite arriving 6 months after its American release, the buzz was already deafening & will change your lives forever. A little dramatic there I know, but this song is just so incredible with its easily relatable message delivered with the right amount of sass & set to thrilling pop instrumentals such as drums patterns, guitars & pianos all hitting the right tempos at just the perfect moments, along with the funky beats, sizzling synths that compliments Britney's distinctive vocals beautifully & then there's that explosive euphoric monster chorus that pops in all the right ways. Each of theme elements delivers an almighty pop masterpiece for the ages & even after more than 20 years this juggernaut of a pop song still sounds incredible.

My loneliness ain't killing me no more AJWtLf4-WWs 4. Stronger | 9.5 Highest Scores: 11: (Nina West, Jessie Where, One For Sorrow, Tafty, Lukuzz), 10: (spiceboy, Slayer, Nick F1, JLJ, Nick Jonas, blacksquare, Mack, Chapman, Eduardo), Lowest Scores: 5: (Scene) At #4 is one of my personal all-time faves - Stronger, released in October 2000 as the 3rd single from Britney's 2nd studio album Oops I Did It Again. Written and produced by Max Martin & Rami Yacoub. The song was one of the several tracks recorded in Sweden with Max & Yami at Cheiron Studios. The track features self-empowerment lyrics about a girl who is tired of her cheating boyfriend and decides to move on without him. Upon release it received acclaim from music critics, with many deeming it the best song on the album & became a global success, reaching top 5 peaks in Austria, Germany & Sweden, while reaching top 10 peaks in Ireland, Switzerland, Finland and in the UK. In the USA it peaked at #11 on the Top 100, becoming the album's 2nd highest charting hit there. The song ranked at number 37 on Rolling Stone's "The 50 Most Inspirational LGBTQ Songs of All Time" list. One of Britney's greatest achievements in pop music and its something that became a lot more meaningful long after its release. Opening with that glorious snarling electric guitar riff then the aggressive thumping beat kicks in and you can already tell that you're in for something very different to what she's done before with its heightened drama as she belts out the chorus with almighty confidence & never lets up until the middle eight before coming back with a new melody and distorted beats & therefore this pop masterpiece takes you on one hel of thrill ride from start to finish. The visuals that accompanies the song is equally as iconic and remains one of the most toweringly epic in her extensive back-catalogue. Despite its somewhat mixed commercial success, it's #7 peak in the UK meant that it was her first to miss the top 5, doesn't take away how prominent and well-regarded it has become, especially in relation to her career & how successfully it pushes those bondaries to become an absolute powerhouse of a song, that has now become a triumphant anthem of survival.

I'm not that innocent CduA0TULnow 5. Oops I Did It Again | 9.395 Highest Scores: 11: (Anita Hanjaab, Roba), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Slayer, Nick F1, TimConArtist, GTH, pippa, Nick Jonas, Mack, Pandamic Tension, Tafty, Eduardo), Lowest Scores: 7: (Jessie Where, blacksquare, Lukuzz) Let's kick off the all important top 5 in almighty style with Oops I Did It Again, released in April 2000 as the lead single from Britney's 2nd studio album of the same name, and her 6th single overall. Written and produced by Max Martin and Rami Yacoub. The lyrics refer to a woman who views love as a game, and she decides to use that to her advantage by playing with the emotions of a boy who likes her. The bridge features spoken dialogue which references the hit 1997 film 'Titanic'. Upon its release it received mainly positive reviews from music critics & became a massive commercial success worldwide by topping the charts in at least 20 countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland & in the UK, becoming her 3rd chart topper there. In the USA it only managed a #9 peak due to Jive Records not issuing a physical release, as they were focused on album sales, a tactic which worked as her 2nd album sold over 1.32 Million copies in its first week there. The song was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2001. The iconic accompanying music video was directed by Nigel Dick; it depicts Britney dancing on Mars dressed in a red bodysuit. It went on to receive three nominations at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Probably one of the most meta pop moments of all-time, its something that would have never existed without 'Baby One More Time', as despite having a similar formula to it, this manages to take the essence of what worked before, while at the same time takes some unexpected and unorthodox deviations to create one of Britney's most iconic and signature career hits that successfully continued the momentum built up by her first album & singles. Britney was simply too big to fail at the time and whatever she released it would have been successful anyway. However, now that her direction and sound was firmly established there was no going back. There was a lost riding on 'Oops' being the first new single to launch a new album cycle, the title alone is a knowing, self-referential nod to the role that the track was fulfilling. It successfully evolves her sound with one of the most recognisable intros in pop music, the thumping double synth stabs, catchy chorus and that tempo sustained throughout is glorious thanks to the stellar production. Then there's that now iconic tongue in cheek spoken interlude between Britney and her lover (voiced by Max Martin), which went onto become a pop-culture phenomenon in its own right. This has to be the lead single, it wouldn't have made any sense in any other context and what a brilliant offering it was, an incredibly fun pop song.

It's Britney, bitch elueA2rofoo 6. Gimme More | 9.25 Highest Scores: 11: (Chapman, Lukuzz), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Jade, Jessie Where, Slayer, Nick F1, GTH, Nick Jonas, blacksquare, Tafty, Scene), Lowest Scores: 5: (Anita Hanjaab) At #6 is Gimme More, released in August 2007 as the lead single from Britney's 5th studio album Blackout. Written by Jim Beanz, Marcella "Ms. Lago" Araica, Nate "Danja" Hills and Keri Hilson, and was also produced by Danja. The song recorded in 2006 during Britney's second pregnancy and was one of the first solo productions by Danja whose vocals are also used on the outro. The single's only promotion was at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, which was panned by many critics, with one deeming it as one of the worst performances to grace the MTV awards. The music video mixed to negative reviews from critics, who panned the lack of storyline & dancing. Despite all this the song itself received critical acclaim & became a massive commercial success worldwide by reaching top 5 peaks in 14 countries such as Canada, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Australia, UK, Switzerland, France & in the USA where it peaked at #3, becoming her 2nd highest charting single at the time. After her MTV performance, Cara Cunningham (then known as Chris Crocker) uploaded a video on YouTube in response to the criticism titled "Leave Britney Alone!", which made her an Internet celebrity and attracted attention from the media. That iconic opening line "It's Britney Bitch" has to be one of the most brilliant lines in the history of pop music, then the hypnotic electronic beats and fuzzy basslines kicks in and you instantly know that you're in for something very different to Britney's previous work & its fantastic. The brooding futuristic production, pulsating rhythms & breathy vocals gives everything a slick and thrilling sound at the same time, and sets the perfect tone for what to expect from her 'Blackout' which was very ahead of its time. The song like the album itself is a pure masterpiece and despite being released at what was perhaps her darkest time period in the public eye, she still managed to deliver something incredible and you have to commend her for that.

I'm so excited, I'm in too deep Q4VK9_CfOLQ 7. (You Drive Me) Crazy | 9.02 Highest Scores: 11: (Herbs), 10: (Nina West, Anita Hanjaab, Jessie Where, Nick F1, GTH, Lukuzz), Lowest Scores: 6: (JLJ) Heading into the 9 averages now at #7 with (You Drive Me) Crazy, released in August 1999 as the 3rd single from Britney's debut album Baby One More Time. Written and produced by Max Martin, Per Magnusson and David Kreuger with additional writing by Jörgen Elofsson and remix by Martin and Rami Yacoub. It was also featured on the soundtrack to the 1999 teen romantic comedy "Drive Me Crazy". The song was remixed for its single release titled "The Stop Remix". Upon release it garnered positive reviews from music critics & became a commercial success worldwide by reaching top 10 peaks in more than 17 countries such as Belgium, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand, UK & in the USA. The music video features cameo appearances of actors Melissa Joan Hart and Adrian Grenier, who star in the movie "Drive Me Crazy", which is named for the song. As part of promotion for the song, Spears performed the song at the 1999 MTV Europe Music Awards and 1999 Billboard Music Awards. This track & the #8 entry 'BTMYH' were constantly neck and neck throughout the competition, but about half way through this started getting much higher scores & beat that other track by 6.5 points. This song especially in its remixed form acts as a spiritual sequel to her debut hit 'Baby One More Time' with its immediately distinctive thumping intro, however, this isn't doesn't pale in comparison by any means, as its a fantastic song in its own right with its simple yet effective formula of bouncy beats, edgy synths, recurring cowbells & smart production that helps this soar above the usual teen pop fodder from this time period & thanks to Britney's strong vocals and charisma the song bursts with infectious energy at the right moments. This is become one of Britney's most prominent and celebrated gems from her early career that further cemented her ongoing chart dominance that would continue to flourish with each release.

I'm sitting here alone up in my room Yy5cKX4jBkQ 8. Born To Make You Happy | 8.75 Highest Scores: 11: (Nick F1, pippa, Pandamic Tension), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Anita Hanjaab, ready for it, Mack), Lowest Scores: 5: (Jade) At #8 is Born To Make You Happy, released in December 1999 as the 4th and final European single from Britney's debut album Baby One More Time. Written and produced by Swedish duo Kristian Lundin & Andreas Carlsson, and this was the first work by the duo & was mixed at Cheiron Studios by Max Martin. Britney's producers were unhappy with the sexual overtones of the song, and the song underwent at least one re-write before its release. Britney first recorded the vocals for the track in May 1998, which were later re-recorded in September 1999 for the ‘Bonus Remix’ of the song. The 'Bonus Remix' was recorded following the label's idea to remix the song to have more punch & to be more commercial. This idea came from the success of the remix release of "(You Drive Me) Crazy". Within 24 hours of hearing the new remix, Clive Calder decided to keep the original album version for the single release, and to have the "Bonus Remix" as the b-side to the single. Upon release it received mixed to positive reviews from music critics & became a massive success throughout Europe by topping the charts in UK & Ireland and reaching top 5 peaks in 15 other countries including Austria, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden & Switzerland. The song wasn't released as a single in the USA & Australia, instead "From The Bottom of My Broken Heart" was released as the final single in those countries. Talk about ending a successful debut era with an almighty BANG (well in Europe at the very least). This song was an important bookend to the album's campaign in the UK as it became her 2nd #1 and reignited interest in the album itself, which went onto reach a new peak of #2 & eventually go onto sell over a Million copies. This cute mid-tempo ballad is laden with stunning synths, drum kicks & beautiful melodies gives it a more organic sound than the previous singles, along with Britney's sweet yet earnest vocals helps elevate it far beyond its teen pop foundations. Britney's fantastic vocals and charisma helps sell this song for everything that's its worth right before it heads into that massive key change & still to this day stands as one of her finest ever recordings.

To think that I would be a victim not another rMqayQ-U74s 9. Womanizer | 8.708 Highest Scores: 10: (Nina West, Anita Hanjaab, Slayer, Nick F1, TimConArtist, JLJ, Nick Jonas, Mack, Chapman), Lowest Scores: 3: (Jessie Where) At #9 is Womanizer, released in September 2008 as the lead single from Britney's 6th studio album Circus. Written and produced by The Outsyders, the song was re-recorded after a snippet was leaked onto the internet. The song was intended to Britney back at the top of the charts after a tumultuous year following her highly-publicized personal struggles in 2007. Britney wanted to move away from the darker & more urban themes of her previous album 'Blackout' & wanted her next project to be lighter. Upon release it received critical acclaim from music critics who deemed it a strong comeback single & became a major global success. In the USA it became her first #1 hit since 1999 & broke the record for the highest jump to number one at a time - 96-1, which was later broken by Kelly Clarkson in 2009. Elsewhere it managed to top the charts in several countries such as Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Norway & Sweden, as well as hitting top 5 peaks in almost every country it charted in and receiving several certifications from several countries. The song received a nomination for Best Dance Recording at the 52nd Grammy Awards, becoming her second nomination in the category. This is the highest ranking song not to get an 11 score, in fact none of the 'Circus' era singles manged any 11 scores which is surprising. While this did put Britney back at the top of the charts, but it came at a price, as from 2008-2021 anything she recorded and released during that time period became the product of a 13-year conservatorship under her father, Jamie Spears, in which she had no control. Pushing all that drama aside this comeback single is a really good pop song and everything a Britney lead single should be in terms of setting the perfect tone for the album. From the opening intro of loud sirens and juddering drum kicks, it pushes Britney to the forefront with her quick fire delivery, making her sound active and engaged with razor sharp confidence. The throbbing synths that runs throughout the relentless dance beats sound refined providing the perfect backdrop for the girl power lyrics thanks to the slick and stylish production. This is a solid Britney track through and through and well deserved its top 10 placement on here.

Top of the Flops: 2006
Didn't like this song & didn't think it worked as a follow up in my opinion. "Turn It Up" should have been the 2nd single & could have fared much on the charts than this lacklustre effort. "Jealously" & "Screwed" would have made great choices as well.

Britney Spears - Singles Rate: THE RESULTS
OMG how can anyone call a #3 & #5 peaks flops, I don't recall either being labelled flops or underperformers at the time as they both continued the momentum & massive success of her debut 'Baby One More Time'. "Sometimes" was a great 2nd single in my opinion & shows a different side to her by releasing a mid-tempo ballad. Anyway anything released after that record breaking smash hit would be compared unfavourably to it & this was a nice change of pace for Britney at the time. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" - Another firm fave of mine, this was obviously held back for release due to it being remixed for its single release, which was a smart move as while the original album version was good, the 'Stop Remix' pops even more. It's #5 peak was FAR FAR from an underperformance & it was released during a very busy chart week with S Club 7 & Shania Twain ahead of it & its chart peak was a great result given the album had been out for several months by this point & had already sold by the bucketloads.

All you people look at me like I'm a little girl Mzybwwf2HoQ 10. I'm A Slave 4 U | 8.625 Highest Scores: 11: (Anita Hanjaab, ready for it), 10: (Nina West, Slayer, Nick F1, GTH, blacksquare, Tafty, Scene), Lowest Scores: 5: (JLJ, pippa) Kicking off the top 10 in almighty style at the #10 spot is I'm A Slave 4 U, released in September 2001 as the lead single from her 3rd studio album Britney. Written and produced by Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams. The song marked a transition for Britney from the teen pop sounds of her previous singles & delves into a more urban & R&B influenced dance pop with the lyrical theme describing the plea of a young woman to be liberated and feel independent. The song's writers & producers Pharrell & Chad also collaborated with Britney on "Boys" another track from the album. Both songs were originally intended for Janet Jackson's album "All For You", she recorded one of the tracks in demo form before she passed on them both and was then handed to Britney. Upon release it garnered a mixed response from music critics, but achieved commercial success worldwide by reaching top 10 peaks in almost every country it charted in such as Germany, Belgium, UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Spain, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, Denmark & France. In the USA it managed to reach a #27 peak on the Hot 100, becoming her first lead single not to crack the top 10. The low sales points were mostly due to the song's 12-inch single release instead of a competitive regular CD single. Since it's release the song has become one of her signature hits, as well as having been considered one of the defining songs of the early 2000s, the new millennium, and of the pop genre. Her 2001 MTV Video Music Awards performance of the song is considered amongst the greatest live performances in pop music history. This marked a true turning point in Britney's career as she leaves behind the bubblegum pop phase of her career & steps forward into a more mature chapter of her career. From the opening beats of this track, it became clear that everything was about to change as she ditches the winning formula of her past hits with this somewhat shocking yet brilliant track. The hypnotic grooves, thumping bass & bouncy beats really expands Britney's sound further and the percussive claps and breathy vocals sounds fantastic against the crisp production that has aged incredibly well & really shows her versality as a performer and even despite the shift in tone, it never sounds anything less than the legendary Britney herself. This may not have had the same commercial impact that her previous lead singles had, but it was no less significant as still to this day stands as one of Britney's most iconic and brilliant that stands the test of time.

I'm Miss American Dream since I was 17 u4FF6MpcsRw 11. Piece of Me | 8.562 Highest Scores: 10: (Anita Hanjaab, Slayer, Nick F1, ready for it, Nick Jonas, Mack, Tafty, Eduardo), Lowest Scores: 4: (Jade) Just outside the top at #11 is Piece of Me, released in November 2007 as the 2nd single from Britney's 5th studio album Blackout. Written and produced by Swedish producers Bloodshy & Avant and Klas Åhlund as a response to the media scrutiny and sensationalism of the singer's private life, which they had witnessed first hand after working with her over the years. The was actually the last song recorded for the album which was considered finished by this point. but the producers were persuaded by her A&R Teresa LaBarbera Whites to work on a new track. Winnberg commented that it had always been an unwritten rule not to write songs about Britney's personal life since the label rejected "Sweet Dreams My LA Ex", a response track to Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River". However, the duo wrote "Piece of Me" & sent it do Britney, who loved it. Upon release it garnered widespread acclaim from the music critics & became a global success by topping the charts in Ireland & hitting top 10 peaks in several countries such as Australia, UK, Netherlands, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Finland & Sweden. In the USA it reached a #18 peak, becoming her 9th top 20 hit there. Rolling Stone ranked the song at number 15 on their list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007. Only missing the all important top 10 by a mere 1.5 & has scored consistantly well throughout the rate. This song makes a bold statement against the toxic tabloid's & even now after 17 years it remains just as bold and effective as it was back then. Despite all of her personal struggles she still manages to deliver the goods & this cracking tune is a testament to that with its defiant attitude, distorted dance beats, mid-tempo melodies & killer hooks each adds to its overall brilliance. Upon my first listen of the album I knew that this was gonna be a single & thankfully this masterpiece of 00's electro pop got its time to shine & became an instant classic overnight. The crowning glory of the "Blackout" era for sure.
