Whitney also getting the benefit of her biopic I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY in cinemas at the moment. That combined with the fact it has become a NYE playlist standard means it could well return to the top 40 by Friday! Her best of album at #14 in midweek estimates would be a new peak for it too. Surprisingly, itnever peaked higher than #27 unlike her 2 previous multi platinum greatest hits collections so would be great to see it go higher!

Even more incredible stat is that there isn't one person in UK who will admit to owning a Cliff Richard album... :D

This is such a refreshing top 10 to see after so many static charts for months on end. A new Number 1, 2 brand new chart entries into the top 10, 2 climbers into the top 10 and 5 songs reaching new peaks. It makes chart watching interesting again!!

I'm surprised Lady Gaga is only at #47 in the updates. I thought this was considered an event single judging by all the media interest last week. I expected a higher debut.

Nice to see Whitney Houston re-enter the midweeks singles chart at No. 50 with I Wanna Dance With Somebody. Must have been a popular New Years party choice. Her hits collection jumps 33 places too up to No.33 in the midweeks.

I think since the film Rocketman has introduced him to a whole new generation of younger fans and has been proven by the continual chart success of hits compilation Dismonds, I'm not surprised at the success of EJ's new album. Prior to the film, he would've been considered a legacy act like Tom Jones. I think his newfound fan base the various collaborators on the album and the huge hit with Dua are helping the sales also.

I think so. I think the daily streams were down significantly last year compared to the previous years despite Mariah securing the top spot for the first time. I wonder has AIWFC finally reached peak saturation...although I should never underestimate Spotify's target audiences apetities to stream the same thing over and over again indefinitely or to blindly listen to whatever the playlist algorithms tell them to listen to...... Just on Adele's new song...if its like Hello or Skyfall (both which I found underwhelming), I'm not sure it will have an extended run at the top but if it's like her brilliant 21 album chart toppers RITD or SLY, then I would expect a lengthy stay at the top!

I'm also surprised at This Love's low placing. I'd have considered it their signature song as well as their breakthrough hit. It was absolutely huge on radio back in the mid 00s. It's true that some songs resonate better on streaming platforms over time. Some massive chart hits from back in the day have minimal YouTube views or Spotify streams yet lesser known minor hits from the era can gather new legs and gain a new huge life on Spotify, YouTube etc for whatever reason.

Unusually, Whitney Houston has gone against the grain among the legacy pre 2000 diva acts in that her Greatest Hits collection is consistently in the Top 50 albums each week and is made up primarily on streams. She also enjoyed a #2 smash hit single with Higher Love only 18 months ago and which is now double platinum in the UK. Many of her classic hits, particularly I Wanna Dance With Somebody generates large streaming numbers every month. Not sure why she is outperforming her peers in this regard but perhaps Higher Love introduced her to a millennial audience who heretofore were not familiar with her back catalogue.

Whitney had 2 UK Xmas No. 1s. The aforementioned I Will Always Love You in 1992 and Saving All My Love For You in 1985.

Lol I was just about to say the same thing. Why is it that when diva type female artists (that appeal to certain fan bases) release new music, chart interest reaches hysteria proportions?' E.g. Kylie, Dua, Gaga, Madonna, Mariah, Cher etc? The Killers, Bruce Springsteen, The Weeknd, Drake etc could sell twice as many units in a chart week but would have way less "fan" attention on this site or elsewhere. Even boybands don't get this much forensic attention. PS, I'm not knocking it..just curious as to the reason for the added hype.

A Christmas album in the top 40 in early October?? Dolly Parton in at #28 This must be the most reshuffled album chart since records began with all the new entries. New entries for veterans such as Queen. Oasis, Bon Jovi, Mel C, New Order, The Bangles, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, Robert Plant among others suggests its quite a struggle for newer artists. Was there some kind of Super Tuesday mass record release that triggered all these album releases the same week?

While it has been in the top 40 for about 6 weeks now, it seems album sales are so low now in general, that a few dozen sales can add a 10 place climb to an album's chart placement. I noted last week that there was only a difference of about 200 sales between #20 and #60 in the album charts. Crazy really for a population of 65 million!

The last 7 inch vinyl I bought was(don't laugh!!🙈) Saviour's Day by Cliff Richard in December 1990 (that year's Christmas No.1). I'm racking my brain for last cassette single but it could've been More Than Words by Extreme in 1991. I really wasn't a frequent singles buyer. My last CD single was Million Dollar Bill by Whitney Houston in 2009 (only cos I was/am a huge Whitney fan). I'm probably committing blasphemy on this forum by admitting I've never purchased a digital download single! I do love music and the charts but have no need to purchase such music myself if I can stream it for free.

So using your logic, any song ever released in the last 60 years, no matter how famous and beloved and still streamed or played repeatedly on radio 30 years later is a miserable flop if it never made number 1? A very narrow minded view as to what constitutes a hit!

I think you're confusing Ladbaby's song now... :D :D For the record, Shane McGowan (lead singer of the Pogues) has explained on numerous occasions about the context. It has absolutely nothing to do with Victorian sticks or meat. It was a derogatory term the alcoholic homeless lady in the song's story hurled at her ex as a put down. Google Shane McGowan and f***** and numerous articles will explain. I can't share links yet.

I remember AIWFCIY well in 1994. I bought the Merry Christmas album from Mariah that Christmas also. If I remember correctly, it wasn't that big an airplay or ubiquitous hit on the radio etc at Christmas from the late 90s to the mid 2000s. It probably would have been played as often as Leona Lewis or Kelly Clarkson's festive hits during those early years post 1994. Familiar to everyone but not the huge behemoth it has now become. I really think it was the airing of the film Love Actually on BBC or ITV around Christmas time in the late 2000s which this song featured prominently that embedded the song in the public conscious as the sole modern Christmas classic. Then of course, downloading becoming chart eligible from 2008 onwards gave it increased prominence at Christmas time. It's the streaming that made it huge then as children seem to gravitate to it similar to Frozen's Let It Go and want to play/stream it numerous times a day. My biggest grievance with modern day chart calculation is not streaming per se but defaulted playlists that involuntarily give certain songs prominence and then they become the biggest chart hits. I do think AIWFCIY has peaked this year also and an element of fatigue has set in. Future generations may move onto newer classics or simply will not embrace Christmas hits in the same way current generations do. The 70s and 80s were golden eras for Christmas hits but new Christmas hits were not existent from 1995 to 2005. I think we are just going through another festive hit boom (albeit with very few new material - just rehashing of old hits). My favourite post 2000 hit is Kelly Clarkson's Underneath The Tree.
