How do I see today's Spotify chart?
To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. The desktop top 50 may update before anything else so is always worth checking if the website is not up to date. However recently it has been known to not to do (even when the website has), so do check all sources. Also note that the Spotify Website will update before external websites (Kworb, LivePopBars). Occasionally there will be a delay in the Spotify chart updating which could even take days.

How often does the chart update?
It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although this is not 100% guaranteed. Sometimes the top 200 on the website will update but without the top 50 on the app updating, and sometimes there will be no update at all.
How many plays on Spotify equals one download sale?
100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. (Spotify will let you play a song on repeat 600 times if you really want to).
The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread. For information on what songs are currently on ACR and what songs will be moving to ACR, refer to this thread.
How much does Spotify contribute to the chart?
Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole, although the #1 still can be decided by who has better paid-for sales. Spotify counts for a good chunk of streaming sales (although it appears to be losing some market share as Apple Music and Amazon Music gain in popularity), so doing well on Spotify is essential for doing well in the chart.
Why is my fave not doing well on Spotify?
Is it being promoted on one of Spotify's major curated playlists? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists, with over a million followers. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist.
Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.
My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?
Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped artists/releases such as Justin Bieber/Ed Sheeran/Drake who will of course enter straight at the top.
What do the numbers mean?
The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

You cannot look at just 1 day of data, you have to look at the whole week
actually, Head & Heart dropped in streams (195K on average last week vs 188K this week), same for Miley
WAP did identical numbers both weeks and Blinding Lights only had a marginal increase,
177K on average last week vs 183K this week, much less than a 25%

Looking at the figures on the Spotify Chart compared to last week, I highly doubt anything is getting reset, very few songs are up Week-on-Week and none by a particularly large amount:
Blinding Lights: +47,000 (+4%)
WAP: +1,000 (+0.1%)
Mr. Brightside: +85,000 (+14%)
Roses: +31,000 (+5%)
Dreams: +54,000 (+9%)
Dance Monkey: +42,000 (+7%)
Rain on Me: +40,000 (+7%)
Sweater Weather: +15,000 (+2%)
Tick Tock: +3,000 (+0.5%)
Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High: +9,000 (+2%)
Savage Love: +12,000 (+2%)
Rover: +10,000 (+2%)
Don't Start Now: +18,000 (+4%)
Adore You +4,000 (+0.8%)
Everything else is either down week on week or wasn't in the top 200 last week so I can't tell how much it has increased.
NOTE: Godzilla may have been reset last week as it increased by 26% due to the deluxe version of the album.
However the Spotify market (top 200) is down from 218,962,228 streams last week to 156,608,119 streams this week, a fall of 28%, I'm not entirely sure on the ACR rules but I believe its not the nominal increase in streams that counts but more the increase in streams relative to the market. Say that theoretically the market has fallen by 28%, could a song have decreased by 2% and still get reset as it would've increased by 26% compared to the market?

Good point about the market and yes I think youre right. It wont be down by as much as 28% though as therell be a higher proportion of streams outside the Top 200 than there was when everyone was listening to Christmas songs.

I do wonder if the pitiful daily numbers on Spotify are going to improve again soon or if this is just a 'new normal', slightly concerning how little numbers have bounced back after Christmas! (At the top end that is of course - I'm sure the long tail of Spotify is doing as well if not better than ever).

yes, it's always relative to the market:
i) Automatic Reset a track within the Top 100 on ACR and which is within 3 years of release can automatically return to SCR if its streams total increases by 25 percentage points greater than the streaming market change week on week. For example, a track with a week on week variance of +14%, in a week where market variance is -11%, would be automatically reset.

Happy to see the "Rain On Me" rising back into the top 30! Hopefully it crosses 1 million total sales sometime this year.
I do hope with the market dropping considerably that it'll reset a number of songs, even if they haven't increased much/at all. I really want "Midnight Sky" to be back on SCR!
It's a shame we don't get figures for Apple Music/Amazon to compare.

MS was on SCR for very long compared to some even bigger hits in 2020. Rain on Me, for instance, went ACR in its 10th week already.

Im just comparing it to Swimming in the Stars which was released 5pm in the UK and managed to do 168k in its first few hours. I guess the figure quoted could just have been the remix and not the original included?

Why are people surprised streams are so low, what new exciting music is there to stream thanks to Christmas songs invading the charts for 5 weeks and no one wanting to compete against them.

Kylie's album has been out 2 months and this is just a remix. It is clear Taylor doesn't care or hasn't tried to compete with the Christmas songs singles wise and just wants to sell albums with this era.
Ed has thrown out a song, it got lost in the Christmas rush and it's really struggling to recover from that by his standards.
All very exciting.

I don't think artists tell months ahead that they are releasing. January/February are THE months to release if one wants to maximise year end streams so record companies are definitely going to take advantage of it.

If only a major artist could take advantage of the lack of competition and drop new music. Surely Adele is due to release soon. 2015 seems like a lifetime ago. Even better would be new RiRi but I won't hold my breath. Even Beyonce who usually releases an album every two-and-a-half years has left it nearly 5 years...

We're in a pandemic. Why are people so shocked that streams are so low? They were low all Summer, but the difference there is that people were having BBQ's & days in the sun etc.. so they at least looked somewhat healthy. People (unlike us on a forum) aren't going to want to be listening to Spotify all day plus tie that into the fact that Alexa's/Echo Dots were probably another big present buy so maybe Amazon is the current highest market for music atm?
The thing that really strikes this home is Bieber's shocking numbers. I mean, the #1 is looking likely to do 30k-ish, how is he not debuting with 40k+ with a song that's been far better received than his latest output? It'll be because people probably aren't bothered by listening to music atm.
That's how I'm seeing it anyway. (I'm not saying what I've said is right ofc)

It was Taylor's 2nd album of the year, its hardly like anyone was gagging for more new music. It's not even #1 when 10k sales would do it and it's on sale.
It isn't really comparable to the 1st new music from Adele or Rihanna in half a decade.

I know he isnt at peak popularity now but I also expect a bit better for bieber considering the low numbers needed to peak high currently. I am sure he will climb over the next few weeks still as more awareness of the track picks up but really shows the lack of interest there is right now for new music (outside of chart fans like us)

💀 at Bieber. Well... it's 2 places higher than 'Lonely' debuted at least! His recent singles have seemed to hold up fairly well so I expect this is one that will grow over time but I really thought from everything I'd heard about this song that it would have got off to a slightly better start.
I guess the terrible numbers all around are helping but that's a surprisingly strong showing for MF DOOM/Madvillain, can't see him getting any top 100 singles entries but this should bode well for him appearing somewhere on the albums chart!
Also lol @ The Weeknd still being #1 and even The Killers only dropping 1 place.

I am not shocked Bieber is flopping, this is his 4th single release in 4 months, a single per month, along with it being 1st January. That is what you call oversaturation. The first single holy started with a 4.6m global debut, 3 singles later he is down to 2m global debut.

There's definitely diminishing returns for Bieber which isn't surprising, it happens for anyone over the course of an album campaign (the key example I use is always Rita Ora, Anywhere debuted lower than Your Song despite going on to be a bigger hit!). I did hope for a better debut than this, though, but I think it has lots of potential to grow - I really hope so as this is his best song since Friends for me!

he's had all the playlist support that exist but there is no real interest,
so it would have done the same
good that HH finally updated after ages being stuck... only Anyone added and a couple songs moved up, so no wonder why new hits are not occurring in the charts...
they moved that Goosebumps song quite a lot, and also finally they moved Golden up a lot, after being stuck 3 months at position #40

Ooh I missed 'Dead Man Walking' entering the top 200 - that song has been around for a while so I'm gonna have a sneaky guess it might be getting big on TikTok now? (Wouldn't be the first time for Brent Faiyaz as that's also how 'Trust' entered the top 100). Whatever the reason, happy to see it, was a top 10 hit on my personal chart a few months ago, a great R&B track <3 he reminds me a lot of Miguel.
Cool to see Glass Animals still reaching new heights too. And... I guess 'Goosebumps' is coming to finally be a top 40 hit in some form, already our first dance remake top 40 hit of 2021 lol (not heard this version yet so I won't slag it off until then xx).

I don't think this sort of thing is uncommon in the world of pop music - many songs probably get offered to different artists and it doesn't work out! The Middle by Zedd quite famously went through numerous incarnations before it ended up on the line-up of artists it got.

Away from that - I'm impressed by Bieber's progress! It's his best in a while. This is exactly the opposite of what happened with 'Friends' - I remember at the time that the site was convinced that it would block Dua's second week at #1 but it stalled at #2, now people were writing this one off and it looks like a future #1 contender!

Some of these songs wouldn't have been hits in the hands of the artists they were originally intended for anyway, it's often about artist profile rather than the song itself, sadly.
I doubt Zara would have smashed with Sweet Melody, Little Mix's relevance wasn't exactly as big as it used to be prior to this single but it was still way bigger than Zara's and enough to get them decent radio and streaming support.
Likewise Leona with Burn all those years ago, that seems to have gone into folklore as a major missed opportunity but I doubt she'd have even gone top ten with it.

but The Middle is a different case, they tried like 15 singers as featured and went with Mae Morris, the song was always Zedd's, it's not that 15 different acts rejected it

wow the story about The Middle and a fascinating read. So an early version of the song was offered to Dem but rejected
then the song ends up in Zedd's lap and finishes it up and tries it with almost every female singer out there from Camila Cabello to
Carly Rae Jepsen, at a certain point there is a supposedly final version with Anne Marie with artwork and release date but that gets cancelled
and in the end it's Maren Morris

By the way Sweet Melody was actually written by MNEK and the other writers in a writing camp for Demi Lovato (we don't know if it was for TMYLM or her upcoming album tho), then it was rejected by other pop girls (Zara, Selena, Jojo and Hailee Stenifeld) and then it went to Little Mix who loved it immediately.

On Friday, just as expected, the 25-year-old released two new tracks off his upcoming album χ, giving fans their first taste of new music since his 2014 album X. Lovers of the Brit and his music were delighted with the new songs "Castle on the Hill" and "Shape of You," but one of those tracks was almost never released.
That's because Sheeran originally wrote "Shape of You" for Rihanna. During an interview on BBC Radio 1's Breakfast Show the singer revealed that he had gone into the studio with collaborators Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid to write songs for other singers, Bustle reports. "I was like, 'This would really work for Rihanna,'" he told host Nick Grimshaw, speaking about "Shape of You." "And then I started singing lyrics like 'putting Van the Man on the jukebox' and I was like, 'Well, shes not really going to sing that, is she?' And then we sort of decided halfway through that we were just going to make it for me." Sheeran went on to reveal that the jam her originally penned for the Barbados singer was one of the last tracks added to his album.

I think 'Good Days' is probably my favourite SZA song to date (excluding 'All The Stars'), happy that it is looking to be a hit! Although judging by the fact it seems to be cut out from the lyric video of the song I'm guessing Radio 1 is probably going to also cut the outro of the song out despite it being the best part of the song, would be 'bad guy' all over again. x

There's been a lot of discussion about Spotify numbers being lower than usual - do we know the figures that Apple/Amazon etc are getting? I think it was mentioned briefly, but I genuinely think loads of people have switched to the others because they were giving away amazing free trials (for 3 or 4 months)! If numbers are down on those then it's probably a fair assumption that streaming is down but I honestly think the lower numbers on Spotify are being made up by the other services!

A quick look at the sales for the official chart top 10 this week is enough confirmation that streams are actually down overall (for the top hits) and it's not just people switching to other services (if anything they'd be getting even higher if it were just people switching, since other services have a higher / 100% proportion of streams counting at the premium tier).
Obviously it's very possible that Spotify is also losing market share but there's no getting around that streams for current big hits really are just unusually low at the moment. This is the case in the US as well I believe (the numbers for the overall streaming chart, not just Spotify, are heading for record lows).
I wish the other streaming services would provide actual numbers or even any indication of relative popularity of songs but they don't sadly ~

Tidal for me has better mastered sound quality and many different versions of the same albums which helps with my last.fm scrobbling needs to.
I think many Spotify users disregard the other services (not saying you have done this because you may have also subscribed to the others in the past) - and I was guilty of this before I actually experimented with different services!

Perhaps so and to be fair I have not used tidal. I tried Apple Music but just did not get on with it. YouTube music is a bit messy but not bad and I don't like Amazons interface. Perhaps I will try tidal for the sound quality.
Apple sales are dwindling and more people have androids however I'm surprised Apple Music dont have a bigger share as a lot of kids have iPhones.

Whether this translates into more for her, I'm not sure. She could just as easily be as irrelevant as Rachel Platten was after 'Fight Song' for example or she could go the way of Billie/Lorde and form a decent career for herself.
Either way, I'd probably say she's gonna be the first "Disney/young star" of the new generation. Probably the Ariana/Selena/Demi/Miley equivalent.

I've just had a look back, if we're being strict, the last female artist to get a #1 with their debut single was Meghan Trainor in 2014! Rachel Platten, Ava Max and Tones and I all reached #1 with their breakthrough hits but none of those songs were their debut singles (though I suppose All I Want means this isn't Olivia's either really).

It's kind of sad times that a Spotify #1 with 325k suddenly seems relatively healthy but wow, this sudden explosion for Olivia is really unlike anything we've seen in quite a while. One would assume she is still unknown to the large majority of the casual audience so those numbers still have room to grow a lot more, can see her being absolutely miles ahead at #1 by the end of the week at this rate.
Probably the most unexpected Spotify #1 (at least as of a couple of days before it got there) since... Dave's 'Funky Friday' at least?

The last time I recall being shocked at something blowing up to quite an extent was the first few days of Daft Punk's Get Lucky, I had no idea that would be so well received. That was download era of course though, it very very rarely happens that a new artist blows up out of nowhere on streaming.
Is there a list of official top five debuts in the streaming era, no doubt most of them are either by superstars or acts with established fanbases, or novelty like LadBaby. I can't think of many new artists smashing out the gate like this.

I think it's pretty likely his proper lead will be a big commercial song (especially after the performance of Afterglow, which nevertheless is a No.2 record) and will be an easy, mammoth No.1.
If anything, an underperformance - if you can call pushing out a not-hugely-commercial song midway through Christmas week and peaking at No.2 with it an underperformance - is good to push people with big aims for success like 'ginge', as in his eyes a low-selling No.2 will be a bit of a failure and will motivate him to do better and push harder next time.

The fact that it's something totally unexpected is what makes it more exciting from a chart perspective but I do have to agree with those that weren't sold. It is sounding better on second listen for me though.
I'm not against Ed or Bieber getting to #1 but it makes for a nice change seeing them behind other songs for once. Especially Ed.

I think regardless of how huge she is smashing, the generation of musicians coming up will find it easier to chart very well but will find it much harder to become household names. E.g. Selena Gomez, Bieber, Rihanna etc. barely made top 10 when they blew up but everyone instantly knew of their names.
This girl is smashing like there is no tomorrow and nobody even knows who she is. It seems that all you need now is a niche base who really mess with what you do and then allow word of mouth to take over, and you can do really well on the charts.

To me it's because you are bringing these opinions to our forum which often don't reflect the general membership of our site. A lot of the stan Twitter world is very full on and can give the impression of blind support without reason behind it. When you respond to these opinions, but at the same time bring them to the conversations in these threads for the first time, you can come across as rather defensive and hyperbolic because that's how those communities interact, which is something that usually doesn't go down well on here! Like you disagree with their opinions, but you bring that energy over here too, would probably be better to stay more linear or deliberately refer to what you're reacting to. We prefer to be a bit more logical and converse rather than battle!

I assume it's just the song with the widest appeal atm. Ik quite a few people who don't think it's "amazing" but "really like what they have heard" and added it to their playlists or found it to be a grower on repeated listens.

I have seen a bit about it on Twitter - from chart accounts and Olivia's tweets being retweeted - but apparently it's everywhere on TikTok - that and Disney Channel are a genius meeting of platforms for a younger audience. Obviously 1 million streams suggests an audience that transcends just that but yeah that's where the hype is at apparently!
