In second place....

2 Fantasy (30 votes, 57.69%) (commentary by Jay and therefore more educated and detailed than mine)

The true winner 'Fantasy' was released in September 1995, as the lead single from Mariah's fifth studio album 'Daydream'. The song heavily samples 'Genius of Love' by the Tom Tom Club (1981).

'Fantasy' achieved both critical acclaim & strong commercial success, particularly in the US, where it spent 8 weeks at #1, and became the first ever single by a female artist to debut at #1. It also hit #1 in Canada and Australia, as well as Top 10 throughout Europe, including #4 in the UK, where it is her 5th best selling single. *.*

This single, particularly the remix version featuring Ol' Dirty bast*rd, was something of a departure from Mariah's previous music, incorporating urban r'n'b and hip-hop, which she would explore further with the 'Butterfly' album.

This is my favourite Mariah song ever, in fact it's one of my favourite songs of all time! I was 7 years old at the time of its release, and my mum bought it on cassette for herself (yaaas stan for Mariah, mum!) - I had no idea who Mariah was at that age and nor did I care at that point in time, but I remember listening to 'Fantasy' and loving it. It was probably one of the first pop songs I ever heard & loved.

Meaning that our winner is....

1 All I Want For Christmas Is You (22 votes, 42.31%) (commentary by Joseph)

The word "classic" is most definitely appropriate for this track. Released as the first single from Mariah's 1994 festive album Merry Christmas, All I Want For Christmas Is You became an instant smash, hitting #2 in the UK. However, in the US, it was only released as a radio promotional single, and it couldn't chart on the Hot 100. This rule was removed in 1998 and the song charted in 2000 at a peak of #83. Despite being a huge hit digitally, it was classified as a recurrent hit and could not re-enter the chart in subsequent years, until 2012 when the rule was relaxed to allow songs to re-enter the top 50 region only if they showed significant gains. The song then peaked at #21, and eventually re-peaked just this week at #18! :cheer:

The song is currently at #12 in the UK top 40, becoming a staple hit every year. Officially "everyone's favourite Christmas song", according to Jameela Jamil :jameela: plus it's the song that sleighs The Pogues year in, year out *.* It's also your favourite Mariah song, a well deserved result I think!

I actually voted on the poll with my eyes closed so I forgot what I voted for

AMAZE top 2, got so hard by then, but everything under the top 10 was a bit... disastrous. Even moreso than how Elusive Chanteuse was handled.

'Fantasy' couldn't compete with the sleighage of 'AIWFCIY' but I'm so glad it came 2nd anyway.

^ lol, good gif x

I can't argue with the winner, although like was suggested in the thread I doubt it'd see the same result any other time of year.

'Fantasy' is brilliant, I'm still outraged at 'My All's positioning here but at least something horrifically overrated like 'We Belong Together' didn't claim victory.

'Fantasy' is not only the best song Mariah ever released but arguably the best song of the 90's for me.

The only song that can put me in a great mood no matter what. So joyous and happy. I'll keep it whilst you have your bloody Christmas cheer.

Love both of those songs. "Fantasy" was one of my first CD singles, that I ever owned, had it for an XMAS present and "All I Want For Christmas" is definitely one of my all time fave X-MAS songs along with Do They Know It's Christmas by the first Band Aid, Fairytale Of New York (The Pogues), Last Christmas (Wham), Lonely This Chrismas (Mud), Mary Boy's Child (Boney M) and Kylie's Everyday's Like Christmas.

So a well deserved winner, thanks for doing this.

Great thread , how about a Whitney one now ?
