"Love, Simon" is based on the novel "Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda", a book that Jay recommended to me many months ago and I really need to crack on reading! The movie stars Jurassic World's Nick Robinson in the lead role, with Katherine Langford and Miles Heizer from 13 Reasons Why both in supporting roles! The first poster was revealed yesterday to go along with National Coming Out Day (it's nothing exciting but Nick looks gorgeous as always wub.gif)

I imagine it'll be very similar to an adaption of a John Green novel

holding you to it cool2.gif Do you reckon you'll get around to reading the book before seeing the movie, or would you rather see the movie first? ohmy.gif (Actually after I wrote this, I remember that you're holding off until the newly printed versions of the book with Nick Robinson on the cover is released kink.gif ).

I'm looking forward to seeing this! I can't recall many (or any?) other major-studio produced movies that are aimed at a mainstream market, with a gay teen character as the lead. It seems pretty groundbreaking to me, so I really hope it's successful!

Here's a synopsis for the book:

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

Incredibly funny and poignant, this twenty-first-century coming-of-age, coming out story—wrapped in a geek romance—is a knockout of a debut novel by Becky Albertalli.

This looks SO good, and so refreshing to see a major rom com with big actors have a gay storyline. I hope it's well made / well received.

Finished reading the book in under a day earlier this week and thought it was really sweet - it had me guessing who the anonymous e-mailer was and had a really lovely ending too which was nice. Nick Robinson is a very good casting choice for how I imagined Simon when reading the book so I'm very excited to see the film now, the book captured really nicely a lot of feelings and inner worries/thoughts that I've definitely had too growing up with my sexuality etc. x

I bought a non-Nick Robinson copy months ago sad.gif I'm doubtful, I'm busy and distracted with other stuff so don't end up reading as much as I'd like to (how some people can finish a book in a day I have no idea.....)

I'm mainly her for Jennifer Garner tbh. She really is the perfect choice for that warm Mum role. Weird seeing her as a mother of a teen when none of her own kids are teens laugh.gif

^ That's made me feel even more excited to see it too! wub.gif

It currently has a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes! I'm so glad that it's been critically well received. Really willing this to be big commercial success, and I can't see why it wouldn't be because there's such a positive buzz around it!

I saw it last Thursday with Sky vip tickets Really liked it. Quite emotional at bits. Very sweet. But it also reminded me of another movie which I shouldn’t mention otherwise I’d be spoiling the end. Recommend

I can't make it to the preview after all! sob.gif Hope you enjoy it, Jonjo!

~

Love, Simon debuted at #5 in the US weekend Box Office, with $11.5m. It's seemingly performed as well as it was expected to (it was predicted that it would open between $10m and $12m range). Hopefully it'll prove to have a consistent run in the US!

1 (1) [$27.0m] Black Panther (Rotten Tomatoes - 97%)
2 (N) [$23.5m] Tomb Raider (RT - 49%)
3 (N) [$17.1m] I Can Only Imagine (RT - 62%)
4 (2) [$16.6m] A Wrinkle in Time (RT - 40%)
5 (N) [$11.5m] Love, Simon (RT - 91%)

Forbes:
QUOTE
The other big wide release is 20th Century Fox’s Love, Simon. The Greg Berlanti-directed romantic dramedy is noteworthy because, even in 2018, it is the first major-studio teen rom-com about a gay kid. The film earned mostly rave reviews, and Fox also sneaked it last Saturday to build word-of-mouth.

So, having said all of that, its $11.5 million debut weekend is squarely in the realm of “Okay, I guess.” The Nick Robinson-led heart warmer (it’s about as good as Wonder, especially in the second half) cost just $17m to produce, so a $11.5m opening weekend is good enough. It is right in line with projections and about on par with Paper Towns ($12.65m in 2015) or Everything, Everything ($11.7m in 2017).

I’ll be honest, I was hoping this would break out a bit, especially with the rave reviews and the national sneak preview thing, but a good opening is a good opening. Total speculation, but I must wonder if at least some of the targeted demographic bought tickets to other movies and snuck into Love, Simon. With an A+ CinemaScore rating, I can only hope that the film legs it out over the next month.

MGM and Warner Bros.’ Everything, Everything legged it to $35 million last year, but 20th Century Fox’s Paper Towns was frontloaded and ended with $32m (but then earned $53m overseas). New Line’s If I Stay snagged $50m from a $15m debut in 2014 while CBS Films and Lionsgate’s The Duff earned $34m from a $10m debut in 2015. I am hopeful that the high audience marks and media coverage will keep this one in the game.
Movie City News:

Teen gay coming-of-age story Love, Simon was predicted to open in the $10 million to $12 million range. Its audience was largely female at 58% but younger with 59% of its crowd aged 35-years and younger.
