September 15, 200915 yr 1989 = Summer of Love. If your a devout dance music fan, you'll be hard pushed to find a better year than this.
September 15, 200915 yr Author 01. Black Box - Ride On Time Absolute pop/dance classic with a terrific Loleatta Holloway sample 02. Jason Donovan - Every Day (I Love You More) Bland. Bland. Bland. Even the biggest S.A.W. fan couldn't think this is any good. 03. Richard Marx - Right Here Waiting Mid atlantic ballady tosh from a guy who recorded a mountain of such tripe 04. Jive Bunny And The Mastermixers - Swing The Mood f***ing Hell. This is a crime against music and offended my ears every Saturday morning while watching the chart show 05. Tears For Fears - Sowing The Seeds Of Love Don't know whether this is more inspired by the Beatles or ELO but was probably the last decent single they released 06. Big Fun - Blame It On The Boogie Urrgh! This possibly could be one of the worst singles in history. Jacksons meet S.A.W. (I think - correct me if I'm wrong). Hideous. 07. Damian - The Time Warp {1989} Dreadful cover of the Rocky Horror show tune. 08. Alyson Williams - I Need Your Lovin' I didn't know this but turns out to be a slow jam sort a thing. Not for me. 09. Starlight - Numero Uno Italo-House down on a piano. There were hundreds of these things around then and this is no better or no worse than seversl hundred others 10. Tina Turner - The Best Awful awful song with any credibilty now laid to rest by David Brent 11. The Beatmasters Featuring Betty Boo - Hey DJ I Can't Dance To That Music You're Playing/Ska Train The sort of thing Buzzjack would have gone mad for if the site had been around in 89 12. Cliff Richard - I Just Don't Have The Heart OMG! This is even worse than Big Fun. Cliff produced by SAW! Ye Gods! 13. Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus Genuinely great song later covered by Marilyn Manson and to better effect by Johnny Cash 14. Prince - Partyman Second rate tune from the previously peerless funk rock pop genius. The Batman album definitely signalled a downturn in critical fortunes. 15. Alice Cooper - Poison Alice's most cliche ridden rock ballad but ended being played everywhere in 1989. Now found on every Top Gear type album. Probably. 16. Madonna - Cherish Fairly innocuous pop from the old tart. Not one of her best 17. Sydney Youngblood - If Only I Could Sorry, some of these songs evoke such a knee-jerk reaction that I just can't bring myself to comment 18. The Cure - Lovesong Amazingly this reached #2 in the US. Great track from indie stalwarts 19. Technotronic Featuring Felly - Pump Up The Jam Now I know this may come as a bit of a suprise but I love this 20. Martika - Toy Soldiers Now this I absolutely adore. Felly's off-kilter (fairly crap) rapping sets the track up nicely 21. Bon Jovi - Lay Your Hands On Me Typically subtle power-rock from the big haired tit 22. Guns N' Roses - Nightrain Classic track from THE rock album of the late 80s 23. Aerosmith - Love In An Elevator Aerosmith get down with the double entendres one more time and didn't I love it 24. Debbie Gibson - We Could Be Together Miley Cyrus forerunner who amazingly only had 2 top ten hits. Seemed much more ubiquitous than that. 25. Janet Jackson - Miss You Much I'll leave comments about the Jackson clan to someone who cares 26. Kylie Minogue - Wouldn't Change A Thing More SAW pop. Yawn. 27. Lil' Louis - French Kiss A kind of house Je T'aime. Great track 28. Adeva - Warning I never never liked Adeva. Bland soul. 29. Donna Summer - Love's About To Change My Heart More SAW produced insipidness 30. Marillion - Hooks In You Marillion descended into AOR rock hell after Fish left. 31. Eurythmics - Revival Well past their best 32. Lisa Stansfield - This Is The Right Time Standard dance pop fare 33. Malcolm McLaren - Something's Jumpin' In Your Shirt This is badly in need of a good tune. 34. Shakespear's Sister - You're History Great single from Siobhan Fahey and certainly better than her former bandmates in Bananarama 35. WASP - Forever Free WASP were an awful rock band and this is that horrendous 80s cliche, the big rock power ballad 36. The Rolling Stones - Mixed Emotions Forgettable pub rock from the old stagers 37. London Boys - Harlem Desire HI NRG Euro-disco stomp. Sends a shudder down my spine (in a bad way) 38. S-Express - Mantra For A State Of Mind At this point they they had lost the impetus of the earlier hits. Generic dance groove. 39. Redhead Kingpin And The FBI - Do The Right Thing Hip-hop track. New Jack Swing apparently 40. Aretha Franklin And Whitney Houston - It Isn't It Wasn't It Ain't Never Gonna Be Just a bog standard late 80s soul work out that did no justice to the Queen of Soul 41. Deacon Blue - Love And Regret This is just wet 42. Liza Minnelli - Losing My Mind Pet Shop Boys produced comeback single 43. The Alarm - Sold Me Down The Ruver/Yn Cymraeg My interest in The Alarm had well waned by this point. Standard rock song although was always well intentioned 44. Queen - The Invisible Man Awful track as Queen continued to completely lose the plot in the 80s 45. Gloria Estefan - Oye Mi Canto (Hear My Voice) This track didn't really endear itself to a twenty year old rocker in suburban London and time hasn't changed that at all 46. Cry Sisco! - Afro Dizzi Act Annoying dance tune that will probably mean a great deal more to somebody else 47. Karyn White - Secret Rendezvous {1989 Re-Release} Hitman and Her fodder 48. Tin Machine - Tin Machine/Maggie's Farm (Live) Bowie's attempt to play in a band. Bad bad move. 49. Gloria Estefan - Don't Wanna Lose You Tasteful but uninteresting ballad 50. Spandau Ballet - Be Free With Your Love Their last chart entry and good riddance on the strength of this to be honest Well there's my first commentary. If you disagree with the opinions expressed therein then you know what to do. Edited September 16, 200915 yr by grebo69
September 15, 200915 yr Author I am going to try and find old specialist charts from the Chart Show in this thread which I think were the dance, indie and rock charts. Just so happens that the Indie chart is the only one represented from September 1989 so here it is: 7dypm2Dz5Jg 1. Inspiral Carpets - Find out Why 2. Regina - The Sugarcubes 3. She Bangs The Drums - The Stone Roses 4. Run 2 - New Order 5. Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode 6. Backwards Dog - The Soup Dragons 7. W.F.L. - Happy Mondays 8. Tom Verlaine - The Family Cat 9. Ivy Ivy Ivy - Primal Scream 10. Sally Cinnamon - The Stone Roses God I think there's only one track here that I don't have! Bloody Indie Kid! And surprise surprise, no Erasure! Madchester obviously on the up ahead of the big break through in chart terms coming up in November. Soup Dragons jumping yet another indie bandwagon before their sudden conversion to baggy by dogging Primal Scream's every move.

September 16, 200915 yr Author 1989 = Summer of Love. If your a devout dance music fan, you'll be hard pushed to find a better year than this. I always thought 1988 = Second Summer of Love 1989 = Summer of Rave or is this just splitting hairs?
September 16, 200915 yr Author Agreed, some great house and acid tracks here. Plenty of PWL too :kink: Not a single acid track there. That was the summer before.
September 16, 200915 yr thought it was 'the second summer of love' anyway, THE summer of love was 1967! ... oh you lot werent born then!
September 16, 200915 yr I hate The Best by Tina Turner and yet most radio staions play that far more than any of her other 80's/90/s hits.
September 16, 200915 yr Wow, this is amazing timing...I just found 'Monster Hits 1989' on CD for a quid in a music store and released around this time, it's got half this chart in it! I was just turning the age of 1 back then, but I love the music of this time loads. Lots of Stock/Aitken/Waterman on the cheese side of things - and of course the London Boys! - but good, likeable pop music all the same. Then there's Depeche Mode with literally one of the greatest songs of all time, and loads of classic Italo house too! Can't decide between Personal Jesus and 'Losing My Mind' over which is the best here, the Pet Shop Boys were literally on fire at this time, anything they touched turned to gold!

September 16, 200915 yr Thank God a classic Tears For Fears single rescues a Godawful top 10! Great tracks lower down from S-Express, Shakespears Sister, Lil Louis, Liza Minnelli and an all-time classic from The Cure (how on earth wasn't this a number one single over here? Crrrrazy)... same with the Depeche Mode single.... another classic.
September 16, 200915 yr 01. Black Box - Ride On Time Absolute pop/dance classic with a terrific Loleatta Holloway sample Awful, dreadful rubbish. That screeching "ride on time". Ugh 04. Jive Bunny And The Mastermixers - Swing The Mood f***ing Hell. This is a crime against music and offended my ears every Saturday morning while watching the chart show The gimmick sort of worked the first time. Unfortunately they had another two number ones after this 05. Tears For Fears - Sowing The Seeds Of Love Don't know whether this is more inspired by the Beatles or ELO but was probably the last decent single they released Agreed 10. Tina Turner - The Best Awful awful song with any credibilty now laid to rest by David Brent Never a fan of the centenarian. This has suffered from being grossly over-played. 13. Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus Genuinely great song later covered by Marilyn Manson and to better effect by Johnny Cash Great song. The Johnny Cash version is one of the best cover versions ever. 21. Bon Jovi - Lay Your Hands On Me Typically subtle power-rock from the big haired tit I think you've been over generous there 24. Debbie Gibson - We Could Be Together Miley Cyrus forerunner who amazingly only had 2 top ten hits. Seemed much more ubiquitous than that. She had two top ten hits too many 31. Eurythmics - Revival Well past their best I really don't remember this  42. Liza Minnelli - Losing My Mind Pet Shop Boys produced comeback single Let's face it, this was really the Pet Shop Boys with Liza on vocals. Superb  48. Tin Machine - Tin Machine/Maggie's Farm (Live) Bowie's attempt to play in a band. Bad bad move. Tin Machine showed that even one of the all-time greats was capable of coming up with some cack Selected comments added above
