Posted October 5, 200916 yr .... wanted to keep this seperate from the religion thread.... though obviously the themes overlap. just what IS spirituality?... its a word banded about by all types of people, from those following an orthadox religion to those more pagan/hippy in nature. 'spiritual' people consult astrological charts, spirits, nature deities, 'god', dream of many lives re-incarnating and evolving to a 'higher plane'... etc etc etc i have refered to myself as a spiritual person, its easy to feel something deeply moving when contemplating the natural world and the prospect of the meaning of life... but nowdays im not so sure there IS anything 'spiritual' in the world, are not all 'spiritual' experiences simply human emotion?
October 5, 200916 yr I belive that there are things in the world that transcend our human condition. Just the fact that the Universe exists long before Mankind appeared on Earth must mean that are higher entities out there.
October 5, 200916 yr Author Just the fact that the Universe exists long before Mankind appeared on Earth must mean that are higher entities out there. why?.... i dont follow that logic at all as theres no evidence that any 'entities' exist let alone create/control the universe
October 5, 200916 yr I think (well my definition of spirituality) is to do with ones inner being. The things that make that person, their personality, how they act/behave/what makes them then. Their qualities for instance. My view of it is completely different to things like star gazing, re-incarnation etc.
October 5, 200916 yr I think spirituality is something quite different from spirit which is what Josh was actually describing. I'm gonna go away and think a bit about spirituality as i'm not ready to post about that yet.
October 5, 200916 yr why?.... i dont follow that logic at all as theres no evidence that any 'entities' exist let alone create/control the universe So, you actually think that we're the only lifeforms in a pretty much infinite universe of billions of galaxies.....  Do me a favour..... ..There's a very good reason WHY higher lifeforms want nothing to do with us.... We're still fighting each other over meaningless bullsh!t and just cannot accept that the Universe is a hell of a lot bigger than we are..... We're barely evolved talking monkeys....

October 6, 200916 yr Spirituality, we talking Karma an stuff along those lines? If so, then yeah, i do think there is a higher power kinda guiding our lives. I believe that everything happens for a reason, the good and the bad. I also believe in Destiny/fate. I believe in Karma, and while i don't actively seek out things that will give me good karma i'm trying to avoid bad karma. Not very well likes, but the effort is there.

Not very well likes, but the effort is there. if thats true then doesnt that remove personal responsibility from our lives? does that mean that ian huntly was merely following karma? whathe was pre-destined to do and holly and jessica were always going to die? trouble is with that theory, it only works for the comfortable, normal, balanced people... people with wretched lives will get no comfort from this theory and i cant equate a higher power driving people to do acts of evil..
October 6, 200916 yr i said guiding, not driving. As with all guides you don't have to follow it. Huntley will get his dose of bad karma. Whether it be in this life or in his next. I believe we are all destined to do something, whether we do what we are destined to in our life time or not as the case may be, is up to the choices we make on a day to day basis. If we chose a different route to work in the morning to normal, if we decide to cancel lunch plans with friends....etc.
October 6, 200916 yr Seems like somone is mixing up all kinds of terms here. Destiny is the opposite of choice and you cannot use the terms interchangeably. Destiny means you are on a preprogrammed course towards an eventual end where all the choices are locked and free choice is an illusion. Choice means that the future is not fixed and can be altered in the here and now by any decision that we take. Karma and Reincarnation are specifically tied to Buddhist spirtuality/religion. I guess spirituality for me is being at one with the universe which probably usually means being at one with nature and realising what a fabulous place this earth truly is. This is probably quite a Pagan way of looking at it, maybe even Buddhistic but it's the closest I can come to being spirtual at the moment. For other people it's being at one with God or whoever your supreme deity/force happens to be. Edited October 6, 200916 yr by grebo69
October 6, 200916 yr that isnt what i said , nor what the poster i quoted said either.... :) The poster said "higher entities", that could easily be taken to mean an advanced alien civilisation..... :P You know, like, just to take a few examples from Science Fiction, Timelords, Vulcans, The Q Continuum..... All of which are, fictionally, more evolved and advanced than humanity....
October 6, 200916 yr I can't remember who this quote is attributed to (possibly Einstein?), but it really sums up my feelings about our place in the Universe in regards to extraterrestrial life: "There are two possibilities - either we are alone in the Universe, or we are not. Both are equally terrifying." I don't think we'll EVER truly understand our significance in relation to the rest of the Universe until that question has a definitive answer.
October 6, 200916 yr I love how a post a thread about spirtuality has become one on extra-terrestial life!
October 7, 200916 yr I love how a post a thread about spirtuality has become one on extra-terrestial life!  Very true.... Thing is though.. What if the "Gods" were actually an advanced alien lifeform who came to visit us thousands of years ago....? And the reason they've not been back is because of the damage their visitation had actually caused...?

I love how a post a thread about spirtuality has become one on extra-terrestial life!  Very true.... Thing is though.. And the reason they've not been back is because of the damage their visitation had actually caused...? but its YOU who shifted the debate from spirituality to extra terrestrial life!!!! by totally misunderstanding my earlier post! this is NOT a debate on extra terrestrial life, i have no doubt that there are plenty of other life forms in the universe... we are talking about spirituality, any further off topic posts will be deleted. start your own thread on extra terrestrial life if you wanna go there.
