The Top TV, back then (Figures based on the number of homes, rather than individuals)

01 BRUCE FORSYTH AND THE GENERATION GAME 8.40...family fun with Bruce & his 2nd wife Anthea Redfern on Saturday evenings. 07 UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS 7.50...the late Gareth Hunt joined the cast for the Saturday Edwardian drama, now in the World War One period

15 BERYL`S LOT 6.70...The story of Beryl Humphries (Carmel McSharry) aged 40, married stuck in a rut. A Yorkshire TV sitcom, running for 52 episodes

18 DR WHO 6.40...Saturday ahead of Bruce Forsyth, Tom Baker plays the timelord assisted by Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane), & Harry Sullivan (the late Ian Marter)

19 THE DICK EMERY SHOW 6.30...Saturday sketches galore with the master of disguise, featuring the likes of Lampwick, the Bovver boy, the Vicar, and Mandy

19 NEWS AT TEN 6.30...Monday with Reginald Bosanquet

Top Of The Pops pulled in 5.5million homes in 1975. The Basil Brush Show kicked off the BBC`s Saturday evening assisted by Roy North. As Chris Tarrant hosted TISWAS in the ATV region, while future queen of the show Sally James fronted LWT`s "Saturday Scene" in the London area. The unfortunate flop of 1975, was "The Invisible Man" with David McCallum as the scientist who`s experiment went wrong in the Klae Corporation. It was originally shown on Fridays at 7.15. Very popular in Britain, so much so it was shown 4 times between 1975 & 1990. In the US, (where it was made) they didn`t like it. They cancelled it in December 1975, with some episodes unseen there at that point. 6million homes watched weekly in the UK. The final episodes, saw the BBC put it up against ITV`s "Opportunity Knocks" on Mondays. In 1976, the US recreated it as "Gemini Man" with Ben Murphy injured in a radiation blast under the sea while working for INTERSECT. This failed worse, and wasn`t so clever in the UK either. Towards the end of that series the female part "Abby Lawrence" (played by Katherine Crawford) was dropped, and never explained on screen. Two episodes were tied together for a film in 1981 called "Riding With Death". Even more incoherent was the disappearance of the "Abby" character, and the amazing growing of Leonard Driscoll`s (William Sylvester`s) moustache! On watching the series again recently, I realised that most of the stories, had been basically nicked from previous stories of the 1975 Invisible Man series anyway.

Thanks Dave, can I ask if the pre-order album chart for Will includes both the cd and the dvd?

Thanks,

FM

Bandaged not even a dent on the Physical chart, hardly surprising.

You can, but it doesn`t. Looking at the total sees Will enter the Albums at #9, for next week...

I'm not surprised Call of Duty is at the top :heehee:
Going back to Doctor Who in 1975 - which week are you using for the TV chart? The Doctor Who story airing from 25 October to 15 November was the excellent Pyramids Of Mars which doesn't feature Ian Marter but the next serial, The Android Invasion (which aired from 22 November to 13 December did. It was his last serial for Doctor Who and the first in which he'd appeared since the Terror Of The Zygons finished in mid September and even that had originally been intended as the last serial of the previous season which would have finished in June 1975. However, the powers that be were worried about the impact the ITV debut of Space:1999, due to appear in September, may have on a later starting Doctor Who and the new season was brought forward with the Zygons serial kept back to kick off the new season. After this season it became something of a tradition to start the new Who season in September until the BBC moved Doctor Who to weeknights in 1982 and in doing so set in chain the events that would kill off the programme first time around...

It was the week of "Pyramids Of Mars". Though, I didn`t use the individual story cast. I took it from the season`s full cast. I seem to remember that Ian first appeared in the Jon Pertwee story "Carnival of Monsters", although he played a different character other than "Harry". That story got a BBC2 repeat in November 1981 (Mon-Thurs). Ian was also a writer of DW stories too, of course....and remember the spin-off book "Harry Sullivan`s War?"

Thanks Dave

Shocked to see BEPs at number 1 (haven't been following the midweeks!)

Surprising to see Agnes ahead of Alesha Dixon and Rihanna on pre orders!

It's great tho :w00t:

Your nice. Are you not a fan of it then. :(

There are many ex-BBC employees who detest it. I`ll tell you why...Eastenders budget was so big in 1985, that it was the reason certain BBC shows getting shelved/cancelled. This included the slashing of the budgets of series, like the afore mentioned "Dr Who". Michael Grade used cheapo repeats to fill gaps of cancelled shows, such as "The Muppet Show". Your licence fee accounted for a big proportion too.

Enders also, was a con in the ratings with the weekday showings (Tues/Thurs) being added to the Sunday repeat. Falsely giving it the #1 show, when it infact was still Coronation Street. Also, if you really believe 29million watched the Christmas day episode in 1986, then let you be told that this also included 6million of the Sunday Omnibus. A con, and a programme that in my humble opinion ruined the BBC Schedules. Real people living in the real East End are quite happy go lucky too, where as the people in Eastenders are psychopathic manic depressives!

Hence why I always called the show Depressenders. I've always found Eastenders very over r rated and depressing. At least (my favourite soap) Brookside always had flourishes of light and humour to counteract frequent depressing storylines.

Absolutely. It was a shame that Brookside was taken off. It even had a decent theme tune.

Yes, he first appeared in Carnival Of Monsters - which also featured Cheryl Hall who later played Wolfie Smith's girlfriend in Citizen Smith. Ian Marter played the part of one of the ships guests. He was brought into Doctor Who as Harry Sullivan because the show's producer thought the new Doctor after Jon Pertwee left was going to be played by an older actor and Marter would be the person to do all the action scenes. As Tom Baker was relatively young the part became somewhat redundant.

I've read his Doctor Who novelisations but I've not read Harry Sullivan's War.

Brookside had basically ran out of ideas by the end as anything and everything that could happen happened in the Close! In the end Channel 4 began to move the programme around, a usually successful way to completely kill off any programme. I was a massive Brookside fan from 1982 to about 1995 but in the late 90s the programme lost its way. Amanda Burton was always my favourite, she looked lovely when she was in Brookside and it was a sad day when she left...

I`m trying to remember who was also lined up to play the Doctor back then. At some point the chap who played "Mr Pastry" was in the running. Richard Hearne was it? Ron Moody was down to take the role of another, and Michael Horden was down to take the Patrick Troughton role I believe.
