08 Kate Bush - Aerial 2005 (featured track: Sunset)

Her first new work since her weakest album to date (1993's The Red Shoes), came as a two discs concept. The first, A Sea of Honey, is a collection of songs, arranged for everything from full-on rock band to solo piano, featuring songs about fame (King Of The Mountain), and her attitude to it (How To Be Invisible), mathematical equations (Pi), historical figures (Joanni), a lovely ode to her child (Bertie) and a heartbreakingly sparse ode to her late mother (The Coral Room); and the best track the strange tale of a mysterious going on mixed with mundaness of washing full of sexual tension (Mrs. Bartolozzi). If this had been the only material she had released then this would still have been a great improvement on her last album.

But it is the second, A Sky of Honey, a conceptual 42 minute suite about the passing of 24 Hours where one track segues very cleverly and subtly into another that really is the most impressive thing Kate has recorded since 1985 The Hounds of Love. album Nothing much happens except the passing of a day. Musically, this is what listeners have come to expect from Bush at her best - a finely constructed set of songs that engage without regard for anything else happening in the world of pop music. There's no pushing of the envelope because there doesn't need to be. Kate Bush's oeuvre is grace, flair, elegance, and an obsessive, stubborn attention to detail. What gets created for the listener is an ordinary world, full of magic; it lies inside one's head in overlooked and inhabited spaces, and outside, from the backyard and out through the gate into wonder.

07 Portishead - Third 2008 (featured track: We Carry On)

The second consecutive album on my countdown that took over a decade to make, this very icy, dark and unsettling album demands your full attention to be fully appreciated. As difficult, impenetrable, harsh yet beautiful as the continent of Antartica. Beth Gibbons vocals are an instrument to the music (if it can be called that on certain occasions) that create the sonic back drop of the album created by Barrow and Utley. One minute your ears are being soothed, the next you are being assaulted by military like drum machines. Yet this album does not sound processed in the slightest which makes it even more worthwhile. This album is very much in the territory of Goldfrapp at their most uncommercial and Radiohead at their most experimental.

06 Aimee Mann - Magnolia ost. / Bachelor No.2 2000 (featured track: Driving Sideways)

For Aimee Mann, the soundtrack to Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia was her first opportunity to release new material since 1995's I'm With Stupid. True, some of the songs were a few years old, but this was their first release, and each of her nine songs for the film seamlessly fit together, achieving a perfect blend of musical and lyrical tone that she has not matched before or since. They feel like a miniature album, and while some of these tracks are on Bachelor No. 2, the way they flow and play off of each other makes Magnolia feel like a unique, individual work. Of course, it helps that Mann was at her peak in her craft, creating songs that are not only beautifully melodic, but musically and lyrically rich. Sonically, they're of a piece - even her cover of Nilsson's "One" fits perfectly - but there's a lot of variety here, from the bouncy, irresistible "Momentum" to the gorgeously melancholic "Deathly"; from the lovely Bacharach & David inspired "Build That Wall" to the song covered by Coldplay on their first tour "Wise Up". Mann has shined before, but never quite so consistently. Bachelor No. 2 was the subsequent release with a few extra highlights, yet somehow it does not flow as perfectly as those nine songs did on the Magnolia soundtrack. If you have not checked out the highly literate and melodic musical equivalent of Cassandra meets Daria then you are missing a real treat.

Such an underrated artist, she's released four amazing albums this decade and yours is the first countdown where I've seen any of them feature. My favourite is The Forgotten Arm which, unless it's still to come, appears to have missed out on a place on your year end - the lyrics on that album are so poignant and heartbreaking yet the tunes are still as radio friendly (if she ever got played!) as ever. That said, I can't fault the inclusion of Bachelor #2 either, although like you I prefer the Magnolia soundtrack - I have that film to thank for my love of her, I watched it and the only thing I remembered at the end was just how much I'd loved the music. I'd say Calling It Quits & Red Vines are the main highlights not to be featured on the soundtrack.

I also love the Kate Bush and Portishead albums so this page gets major approval from me so far. :D

The Forgotten Arm just missed my Top 150 Albums; it was one of five albums that just failed to make my Top 150. A great album cover story telling package that won her a Grammy as well.

The five close but no cigar albums were:

Aimee Mann - The Forgotten Arm 2005

Elbow - Cast Of Thousands 2003

Kylie Minogue - Light Years 2000

Maps - We Can Create 2007

Paul McCartney - Chaos & Creation In The Backyard 2005

Anyway, I'm going to count down my Top 5 tonight containing 3 female acts; two Canadian acts and three albums released in the UK in 2006!

05 Rufus Wainwright - Want One 2003 (featured track: Dinner At Eight)

The world's most talented solo male artist with the initials R & W croons and cries through a set of lush pop operettas on his third album. If you had heard his first two albums then it would have been no surprise to find songs meticulously layered and textured, with full orchestral passages and many-throated harmonies. Producer Marius "Bjork; Massive Attack; Madonna" deVries didn't mess with the already successful Wainwright sound, allowing for the young singer/ songwriter/multi-instrumentalist to explore his familiar themes of love, loss, and "singin' about places" with the anticipated fanfare and flamboyance. The album's strongest segment comes in the middle, beginning with the intimate-to-epic "Go or Go Ahead," barreling through the wildly spinning rock opera "14th Street," and landing softly on the gently chiming "Natasha." However the album is bookended by the highlights of the two singles "Oh What A World" and "I Don't Know What Is Is" and the heartbreaking tale of him having a row with his famous estranged father Loudon Wainwright III "Dinner At Eight".

04 Nerina Pallot - Fires 2006 (featured track: Idaho)

In the age of Simon Cowell dominated Reality TV and instant success, Nerina Pallot was a singer/songwriter who didn't quite fit *, failing to chart at all with her first albums, Dear Frustrated Superstar. Whilst Fires was reissued before it finally broke through, and even then it didn't quite reach the Top 20. She had the fire and anger of Alanis Morissette; the Kate Bush angst of Tori Amos; the obtuse lyrics and tunefulness of Fiona Apple; along with the melodic qualities and thoughtfulness of Joni Mitchell, as shown on the opening track, "Everybody's Gone to War," an updated protest song (after all, wars were still going on in various places all over the world). Quite simply here is a set of 11 real songs without anything remotely resembling an album filler amongst them, all written by Pallot and sung with feeling, backed by either acoustic guitar or piano. The influence of Mitchell could be heard most clearly on "Sophia," the second single to be released, a simple melody with Pallot's voice soaring unexpectedly up and down the scales over piano accompaniment. But by way of complete contrast, "All Good People" and "Heart Attack" were full-on Alanis meets Tori rock tracks.

* Ironically this year after her third album has just failed to reach the UK Top 40, she has written a song that is performed live by one Minogue for her forthcoming album, and has been approached by the younger Minogue for songs for an act she is mentoring ....

03 Joanna Newson - Ys 2006 (featured track: Sawdust & Diamonds)

Ok, hands up everyone on Buzzjack who's idea of entertainment is an indie folk album performed by a harpist with a childlike American Bjork soundalike voice on an epic, restless, demanding album made up of five dazzling, shape-shifting songs that range from seven to 16 minutes long?

Newsom embarks on this adventure of an album with help from talents as diverse as grunge engineer Steve Albini, legendary 1960s arranger Van Dyke Parks, and producer Jim O'Rourke. Ys' daring, plentiful wordplay makes it even more of a rarity: an extremely musically accomplished album with lyrics to match that Stephen Fry would have an orgasm over. These songs are so full of words and plot twists that sometimes it feels more like you're reading them instead of listening to them, and indeed, actually reading the lyrics in the book-like liner notes reveals that Ys has a library's worth of children's stories, myths, romances, and of course, fairy tales woven into its words. As the album unfolds, it seems like Newsom can't get more ambitious (and more importantly, pull it off), but with each song, she does.

Yes, Ys is a demanding listen (I can't do anything else if I want to listen to this album properly), but it's also a rewarding and inspiring one. Letting it unfold and absorbing more each time you hear it is a delight.

02 Arcade Fire - Funeral 2005 (Featured track: Neighborhood #3 (Power Out))

Fronted by the husband-and-wife team of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, the Arcade Fire's emotional debut rendered even more poignant by the dedications to recently departed family members contained in its liner notes is brave, empowering, and dusted with something that many of the indie-rock genre's more contrived acts desperately lack: excitement and innovation. Initially the single Rebellion (Lies) made me purchase it especially after reading recommendations from music critics and credible artists championing it like David Bowie, Brian Eno and Peter Gabriel. Highlights include "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)," the first of four metaphorical forays into the geography of the soul, follows a pair of young lovers who meet in the middle of the town through tunnels that connect to their bedrooms. Over a soaring piano lead that's effectively doubled by distorted guitar, they reach a place where they can't even remember their names or the faces of their weeping parents. Butler sings like Thom Yorke meets Roger Waters meets Black Francis where he can barely contain himself and "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)," Funeral's victorious soul-thumping core, is a goose bump-inducing early 1980s New Order rallying cry centered around the notion that "the power's out in the heart of man, take it from your heart and put it in your hand." However, it's the sheer power and scope of cuts like "Wake Up" featuring all 15 musicians singing in unison and the mesmerizing, early-Roxy Music pulse of "Rebellion (Lies)" that make Funeral the remarkable achievement that it is and by the time Chassagne dissects her love of riding "In the Backseat" with the radio on, despite her desperate fear of driving, Funeral's theme is finally concluded; love does conquer all, especially love for the cathartic power of music. Amen.

'Funeral' I'm afraid I'm not really that bothered with the rest of your top 10, it's all too singer-songwriter for me and most washes over my head. :( Some great albums included though, I shall post in more length when (if) you summarise. ^_^

01 Amy Winehouse - Back To Black 2006 (featured track: Love Is A Losing Game)

The self fulfilling prophecy of Back to Black is one in which celebrity and the potential of commercial success threaten to ruin Amy Winehouse, since the same insouciance and playfulness that made her sound so special when she debuted were on the brink of being wiped right out of existence for this blockbusting record as she looked so shockingly different and thinner than she did promoting her debut. Although Back to Black does see her deserting jazz to a large degree and wholly embracing contemporary R&B, all the best parts of her musical character emerge intact, and actually, are all the better for the transformation from jazz vocalist to 1960s meets 2000s soul siren. With producer Salaam Remi returning from Frank, plus the welcome addition of Mark Ronson (fresh off successes producing for Christina Aguilera and Robbie Williams) and before he too got over exposed, Back to Black has a similar sound to Frank but much more flair and spark to it. Clearly inspired by girl group soul of the '60s Ronson and Remi were sympathetic to her vision. They certainly knew how to evoke the era too; Remi's "Tears Dry on Their Own" is a sparkling homage to the Motown chestnut "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and Ronson summons a host of 1960s classic soul touchstones on his tracks.) As before, Winehouse writes all of the songs from her experiences, most of which involve the occasionally riotous (lyrics) and often bittersweet vagaries of love. Also in similar fashion to Frank, her eye for details and her way of relating them are delightful. She states her case against "Rehab" on the knockout first single with some great lines: "They tried to make me go to rehab I won't go go go, I'd rather be at home with Ray" (Charles, that is). As often as not, though, the songs on Back to Black are universal, songs that anyone, even X-Factor contestants, could not butcher to death, such as the truly heartbreaking "Love Is a Losing Game" or the title song ("We only said good bye with words, I died a hundred times/You go back to her, and I go back to black").

Of course, the media maelstorm, death wish marriage to Blake-Fielder and addiction to alcohol and crack cocaine appeared to have turned out the light on her creative talent. But after resting this overexposed 5 time Grammy winning album for nearly a year, then playing it again makes me release why all these retro soul female artists appeared in the aftermath of her abyss....... because the album is so fukking brilliant and decade defining in the most disappointing decade for mainstream popular music since the 1950s.

Couldn't agree more about Joanna and Arcade Fire. FABULOUS albums. Other albums are great as well. ;o Aerial is stunning, though Bush's finest work is easily The Dreaming or Hounds of Love. Still, Kate Bush cannot do wrong.

Excellent list.

Let's see if I can start a new bandwagon :kink:

I have made a Playlist on Spotify containing one track each from 142 of the 150 albums that made my list. (Boo to the 8 albums not available including no Funeral, Ys, etc).

Link: My Spotify playlist Top 150 Albums of the Decade

Apologies to those of you outside of Western Europe, but I did read in Rolling Stone magazine recently that Spotify is coming to the USA early 2010.

Fires is a brilliant album, surprised to see it so high here :o

I own Back To Black but I don't love it...the singles aside, everything else wasn't up to much to my ears :( interesting that 2006 produced three of the top four albums, although not surprising as personally, and probably musically if you take singles and albums both into account, it was by far my favourite year of the noughties

Appreciating these:
