I don't know if any of you will be particularly interested in this, but.

Every year when the various major music publications put out their 'best of the year' lists, I put them together partly for interest and partly to help with stock choice and promotion at the library where I work.

The rules are -

1. The more lists an album features in, the higher up it goes

2. Within that, the higher up an album is in *any one* list, the higher up it goes, and

3. No album can appear higher on this chart than it does in any individual publication's list. [in other words rule 2 supercedes rule 1 in circumstances where that might otherwise occur]

Does that make sense to anyone at all other than me?!

Anyway, this is the top 10 for this year, combining Q, Uncut, Mojo, Rough Trade and NME's 'albums of the year' lists. The numbers afterwards show their placing from those individual publications.

1. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion :: 4 / 1 / 1/ 11/ 5

2. The Horrors - Primary Colours :: 39 / 20 / 4 / 3 / 1

3. Florence and the Machine - Lungs :: 2 / 16 / 7 / 25 / 26

4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! :: 3 / 9 / 10 / 12 / 3

5. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca :: 33 / 3 / 16 / 52 / 20

6. Richard Hawley - Truelove's Gutter :: 38 / 42 / 3 / 42 / 44

7. Wild Beasts - Two Dancers :: 41 / 5 / 32 / 21 / 4

8. Fever Ray :: 20 / 12 / 18 / 4 / 9

9. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest :: 13 / 8 / 13 / 6 / 6

10. f*** Buttons - Tarot Sport :: 37 / 36 / 8 / 8 / 8

Other placings available on request!

Next 10, since this is proving so popular:

11. The XX - XX :: - / 6 / 22 / 1 / 2

12. The Low Anthem - Oh My God, Charlie Darwin :: 22 / 21 / 12 / 2 / -

13. Manic Street Preachers - Journal For Plague Lovers :: 5 / 23 / 20 / - / 14

14. Arctic Monkeys - Humbug :: 6 / 38 / 23 / - / 23

15. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix :: 10 / 10 / - / 14 / 34

16. Kasabian - West Pauper Lunatic Asylum :: 1 / - / 19 / - / 11

17. Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle :: - / 11 / 2 / 60 / -

18. Bob Dylan - Together Through Life :: 49 / 4 / 6 / - / -

19. Sonic Youth - The Eternal :: 36 / 19 / 38 / - / 35

20. Tinariwen - Imidiwan :: 43 / 35 / 5 / - / -

Thanks for taking the time to compile all the lists into one :)

I thought about buying that Kasabian album...........

Quite a predictable top 2 I guess, but still interesting to see them all combined!

Especially pleased the Arctics made it so high overall - criminally underrated album. :(

Didn't think Florence would be so high though! ;o

Thanks for this, Wes. :D

Manics seemed to do very well critically but I was disappointed in that album. It does pick up half way thought but the start is rubbish.

I though Lungs wasn't great at all apart from some of the singles. Bat for Lashes and Joanna Newsom do this sort of stuff alot better.

I think it's funny that Q didn't like The XX at all.

Great to see the horrors at number 2 - that's my fav of the year.

I bought 10 of the top 20!

I find with Florence that I think she's fantastic one day, and then a few days later I'll hear the same song, same performance, and think it's awful -- or vice versa. I must admit I haven't heard the album though, just the singles and some lives.

I'll post the rest of the combined list up tonight or later this week -- there'll be one for the decade too but I'm waiting for Mojo to publish, I assume they're going to do one of those in their next issue.

Cremey - my, god that's an amazing pic of Cheryl in your signature. Are there any more where that came from? :wub:

From here on (as you can see) they only appeared in one individual list, so these are **selected** others together with the list they appeared on:

Q

12. Jack Penate - Everything Is New

14. Devendra Banhart - What Will We Be

15. Dizzee Rascal - Tongue'N'Cheek

17. Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown

18. Mika - The Boy Who Knew Too Much

19. Monsters Of Folk

23. The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die

32. Paolo Nutini - Sunny Side Up

35. Pearl Jam - Backspacer

40. Cheryl Cole - 3 Words

44. The View - Which Bitch?

45. Conor Oberst And The Valley Band - Outer South

46. Golden Silvers - True Romance

48. Ian Brown - My Way

Uncut

18. Graham Coxon - Spinning Top

26. The Unthanks - Here's The Tender Coming

32. Iggy Pop - Preliminaires

39. Cornershop - Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast

41. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks Live At The Hollywood Bowl

Mojo

24. Vieux Farka Toure - Fondo

29. Mastodon - Crack The Skye

33. Leonard Cohen - Live In London

40. Antony And The Johnsons - The Crying Light

NME

18. Future Of The Left - Travels With Myself And Another

19. The Maccabees - Wall Of Arms

29. Julian Casablancas - Phrazes For The Young

43. Franz Ferdinand - Tonight

46. Gallows - Grey Britain

50. Bombay Bicycle Club - I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose

Rough Trade

10. The Very Best - The Warm Heart Of Africa

49. The Irrepressibles - From The Circus... To The Sea

51. Decemberists – The Hazards of Love

54. Vivian Girls – Everything Goes Wrong

55. Patrick Watson – Wooden Arms

56. She Keeps Best – Nests

57. Soulsavers – Broken

58. The Acorn – Glory Hope Mountain

Not seen any of these lists before, but i'm surprised at Julian Casablancas, Vivian Girls and The Decemberists being not there/so low. I would've thought Tiranriwen would be way too niche to reach the top 20. I mean, they're an african blues group from Mali.

It is an astonishing album though, if it was English language I think it would have been even higher. Uncut made it their 'Album of the Year' in a separate thing (quite why that's only enough to get to 5 on their end-of-year list is beyond me)

Q had U2 and Mika's albums top 20? :wacko:

Yep, that's Q for you...
