18th 16th White Christmas - Bing Crosby 43

"White Christmas" is an Irving Berlin song reminiscing about an old-fashioned Christmas setting. The version sung by Bing Crosby was the best selling single of all time until Candle In The Wind '97 selling in excess of 50 million copies topping the US Billboard singles charts on three separate Christmas runs. It has been covered by more artists than I care to name.

17th 20th Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee (Kim Wilde & Mel Smith cover) 46

"Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" is a Christmas song written by Johnny Marks and recorded by Brenda Lee in 1958 But not released until 1960. The song has been covered by numerous artists, with one of the most successful versions being recorded by Amy Grant, Ronnie Spector with Darlene Love, The Forester Sisters, and a version by Kim Wilde and Mel Smith which reached #3 on the UK Singles Chart during the 1987 Christmas season. The version featured here is the 2006 Miley Cyrus as Hannah Montana version.

16th 18th Christmas Tree - Lady GaGa 48

"Christmas Tree" is a download-only single by American recording artist Lady Gaga featuring French DJ and producer Space Cowboy. The song received mixed reviews, attracting criticism for its overt sexual innuendo.

15th 22nd 8 Days Of Christmas - Destiny's Child 51

"8 Days of Christmas" is the first holiday single from Destiny's Child. The single was only a 2001 promo release so it was not sold publicly. The song is based on The 12 Days of Christmas, but the "8 Days" in the title is a reference to Hanukkah, but the holiday is never mentioned in the song.

13th 10th Stay Another Day - East 17 59

Stay Another Day" was the second single from East 17's second album Steam. It was their first ballad, written by the band's main songwriter Tony Mortimer about his brother Ollie, who committed suicide the previous Christmas. This song heroically kept Mariah Carey's Christmas anthem off the top spot. In 2002, the song was covered by Girls Aloud as the B-side to their debut single "Sound of the Underground". Also the song that was played when Wellard the dog was put down on the BBC soap opera EastEnders and it was referenced during the episode. The most recent cover was a semi-acoustic version by Glasvegas in a session for BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge in 2008.

13th 12th I Was Born On Christmas Day - Saint Etienne ft Tim Burgess 59

Quite incredibly this Xmas indie-disco anthem only reached UK#37 in 1993. But it does have an endearing timeless quality to it that transcends the whole BritPop movement.

The song was released as the debut album's second single in the winter of 2000 and charted within the top twenty of the UK (#12) Singles Chart and the top thirty (#25) of the Irish Singles Chart.

11th 6th Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses 61

"Christmas Wrapping" is a Christmas song written by Chris Butler and recorded in 1981 by The Waitresses, featuring vocals by Patty Donahue. he song has had a huge following in the UK despite only reaching number 41 in the charts at that time and receives airplay at Christmas to this day. It's covers include versions by the Spice Girls, Kate Nash, The Donnas & Miranda Cosgrove.

10th 15th Stop The Cavalry - Jona Lewie 63

The Stiff label released song peaked at number three in the UK Singles Chart in December 1980, at one point only being kept from number one by two re-issued songs by John Lennon, who had been murdered on 8 December. It also reached #2 in Australia, and this song has an anti-war theme.

9th 9th Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade 78

Written by guitarist Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea, and produced by Chas Chandler, it was the band's sixth number-one single in the UK. It earned the UK Christmas Number One slot in December 1973, beating another Christmas-themed song, Wizzard's "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday", which reached fourth place. By mid-January it was still at number one; it stayed in the UK Singles Chart well into February 1974.

Based on melodies from discarded songs written six years before, "Merry Xmas Everybody" was Slade's best-selling single, released at the peak of their popularity, and sold over a million copies upon its first release. It is Slade's last number-one single, but by far their most successful. It has been released during every decade since 1973, and has been covered by numerous artists including Noel Gallagher & the Spice Girls, ensuring it remains popular.

8th 4th Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - John Lennon & Yoko Ono 83

a Christmas song by John Lennon, Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band. It was recorded at Record Plant Studios in New York City in late October 1971, with the help of producer Phil Spector. It features soaring, heavily echoed vocals, and a sing-along chorus. The children singing in the background were from the Harlem Community Choir and are credited on the song's single. Although the song is a protest song about the Vietnam War, it has become a Christmas standard and has appeared on several Christmas albums. Released in the UK in November 1972 it peaked at #2; 8 years later after his death it peaked 2 places higher. There have been more cover versions of this song than are worth mentioning, except the Pop Idol 2 Finalists murdered this song with Yoko's permission in 2003 and took it to UK#5.

7th 11th Merry Christmas Everyone - Shakin Stevens 85

Written by Bob Heatlie and produced by Dave Edmunds, this was Shakin' Stevens fourth and last, number one on the UK singles chart. Originally it was to be released in 1984, but was postponed a year so it wouldn't clash with Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas".

It was Christmas number one in 1985 but with less sales in Christmas week than the WTF genius that was the 1984 Christmas #3 (Paul McCartney & The Frog Chorus - We All Stand Together).

great to see Shaky into the top ten :D sad to see Waitresses fall out though :(

6th 7th Do They Know Its Christmas? - Band Aid 88

Forget that ghastly SAW produced 1989 Xmas #1; or the over wrought and dull 2004 version; the original 1984 version is the definitive version of the Bob Geldof/Midge Ure penned Xmas classic that at the time replaced Paul McCartney's Mull Of Kintyre as the UK's best selling single even reaching USA#13 in February 1985! But for a change I've posted the Live Aid version.

5th 8th Warm This Winter - Gabrielle Cilmi 92

Of course virtually all Buzjackers know this song via Gabriella Cilmi's version. But the original was recorded by US Italian singer Connie Francis way back in 1962 (and I've featured it here) which reached USA#18 & UK#48.

4th 5th Last Christmas - Wham! 109

At the time this George Michael penned track spent 5 weeks at #2 behind Band Aid and became the biggest selling UK single never to top the UK singles charts. It has since been covered by too many acts to mention which always sees a different cover version every year. This year the Glee Cast have covered it and taken it well inside the Top 75's of the US, Canadian & Australian charts.

pleased Wizzard retained their top 3 status

Wizzard>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Slade

How predictable number 1. :(
I remember voting for Mariah. Today, I dunno what it was about today, but I decided that I don't like her song anymore
Fairytale of New York should have won :( Thanks for doing this Rich!

lol this I do disagree with

Fairytale Of New York has gone from one of my fave songs to me wanting to tear what little is left of my hair out in the space of 2 years thanks to overkill from radio stations and the media

It is not even an Xmas song IMHO

What came 3rd should have come 1st ^_^
