The X Factor winner was beaten to the top spot by Rage Against The Machine on Sunday.

But rather than dwelling on the past, the 18-year-old is looking to the future.

"I'll give the Christmas No 1 a good crack next year now," Angry Ape quotes McElderry as saying. "I'm obviously really disappointed to not get to the top spot but I've worked hard to promote the single and I'm going to keep doing that.

"I'm too young to know of Rage but there are obviously people who like it, so I can't complain," the singer added. "I'm just happy to have a single out."

So do you think that Joe can get the first Xmas Number Of Decade or not? Post your views and let them be heard.

Well that was a bit of a naive thing to say...thousands of Rage fans are 18 and under and just because you weren't very old when a band was at their peak doesn't mean you shouldn't be aware of them.

And on this whole issue, I think he should just put it all behind him. It isn't something he should concentrate on next year, he should concentrate on making a good debut album, not getting a Xmas #1...besides, surely the X Factor winner next year will get that. And if he prevents them from getting there, that's a little selfish, with him obviously upset he didn't get it this year, he should think about how next year's winner would feel!

He is talking rubbish there

He knows of Journey who are at least 15 years older than RATM having evolved from Santana yet he says he is not old enough to know who RATM are ?

He is a very talented singer but he really does need to stop making idiotic comments in public

I wouldn't put it past Cowell to engineer that sort of battle though. Particularly if the two singles were released a week apart so they could both make number one with the question being which was number one for Christmas.

I agree with Craig above me. He's been very badly media-trained, if they've even trained him yet, because he keeps shooting his mouth off. As if Cowell will let him release a single next Xmas, and his "not old enough to know them" thing is stupid.
simple answer, no. joe mcelderry will not have a number one single next christmas. i don't even know if he will have a number one single in 2010, unless he performs it on the x factor and the other celebrity act who performs on the same show as him is either 1) not releasing a single that week or 2) rubbish.
I like the way he says stupid things. It means Cowell has even less control over his acts than we first thought.

If he gets #1 on Sunday he should be satisfied.

I'm not sure if he meant trying again next xmas as a serious thing though.

He will NEVER get the christmas number one. He shouldnt be bad-mouthing a band that are soo much more sucessful that he ever will be. I don't like Joe at all. He isnt media-trained.

Imagine Joe launching a Christmas #1 campaign against The X Facor ^_^

Personally I like that he's not media trained. Someone with an opinion is cool.

He's keeping it real and that is to be applauded.

Ye si like the fact he isnt media trained either as far to omany are over trained in media!!

I know joe has alot of press going on around him, but to be fair to him he has a single that will have sold well over half a million in total in just a few days and he will mor ethan likley have his first number 1 this sunday, no bad for a lad just turned 18. This single isnt crucial for him really, what it is gonna be really interesting with joe is the kind of material he comes up with for his next single and the album and also the performance of his next single.

There is a big difference between being opinionated (good) and acting like a 10 year old (bad)

Strong opinions is great but throwing darts at pictures of RATM and insulting people's intelligence by saying he is too young to have heard of RATM only days/weeks after singing 2 Journey songs is very immature and ill advised, the fact that there was a massive sales surge for RATM the same day as that aptly named Bizarre column Joe did can't just be a coincidence

The guy has a lot of talent and he should shut up before he just becomes a laughing stock

who knows....fact is not enough people liked 'The Climb' to buy it. One of the worst choices so far for the X factor brand etc.

I don't think Simon will allow him to release a single to compete with next year's X-Factor Christmas Number 1. I'd love it if he did as Simon will have started to 'divide' his team ... so that if a campaign comes along with a third competitor, Simon would be a bit easier to conquer.

Norma

Who cares what Joe thinks.

He'll be forgotten about by then anyway and in my opinion anyone supporting him needs help.

To me it should be illegal to have the X-Factor on TV.

You are being way melodramatic

Without X Factor/Pop Idol there would have been no Will Young, no Leona Lewis, no Alexandra Burke 2 of which have become massive global stars and the other likely to follow

Joe has an excellent voice, its not his fault he has been lumbered with a pile of $h!te like The Climb

Joe will be a big star
