Mariah Carey’s 1994 hit All I Want For Christmas Is You is the most-played Christmas song of the last ten years, according to PRS for Music and PPL.

The song, written by Carey and Walter Afanasieff, is followed in the list by The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York and Slade’s Merry Xmas Everybody.

The two organisations analysed data from shops, radio airplay, television, international performance and live music over the decade to come up with its chart.

They also report that:

• 1 in 4 people claim to be more generous when buying gifts if Christmas music is played

• 95% of people say they prefer shopping in stores that play music

• 50% of people say Christmas music should only begin in stores in December.

I'm actually physically shocked that Stop The Cavalry and Driving Home For Christmas both ranked above Last Christmas here. Also, appalling #1, but the #2 makes up for it I guess.
Im gald mariah is number 1 as its my personnel fave, and thank god wham charted lower than expected as last christmas is one the worst christmas songs in my opinion.
They also report that:

That leaves a lot of room for people to claim to be *less* generous...

As much as I dislike Mariah I have to admit, All I Want For Christmas Is You is a great Christmas song and will always be one of my favourites. ^_^
