Were there any singers/bands when they first came out you never really thought much of at the time, and then years later maybe after their 3rd or 4th album or after they split up you suddenly changed your opinion, and wondered why you didn't like them first time around?

For me there has been a few, the biggest surprise to me was The Smiths. Seriously, in the mid 80's they just passed me by, but 10 years later I rediscovered them. I did this a lot in the 90's as I hated most of the stuff from then, so I started looking back to see if I had missed some artists, and to be sure I did find some.

What artists did you miss first time around.

Beverley Knight!

I was a major chart fan in 1999, when she had top 20 hits with "Made It Back 99" and "Greatest Day" and another top 40 hit with "Sista Sista", but she almost completely passed me by. Actually, I have a vague memory of Smash Hits giving away the lyrics card to "Made It Back 99" and me laughing at how she'd never had a top 20 hit (it would become her first) but that's about it.

Of course, I couldn't be any more different now. I adore the woman and her music. She could sing me her shopping list and I'd think it was good. My favourite artist, by far. I can only put my indifference to her in 1999 down to being a nine year old and needing to be of a certain age to appreciate proper talent. I was obsessed with the likes of Lolly back then after all.

I think maybe I didn't rate the more soulful female vocals back then, it's only recently in the last year or so that I discovered Brandy and grew to love more than two songs by Aaliyah.

The Smiths as well. Hated them until Girlfriend in A Coma came out and then 'got it'

lol... my immediate thought was 'the smiths'! somehow i was just not paying attention ..

dance in the 90's, i gnored it only to backtrack this last decade.

the walker brothers, but i was only a kid when they were out...now i think they are great!

the monkees and julie driscoll, brian auger and the trinity... HATED '(this) wheels on fire' and the monkees.... again, retrospectively they were fantastic.

EMINEM. Borrowed his first album from someone and hated it. As I liked the singles from Relapse though I bought the album and love it. So started buying more of his back catalogue and love them all. Would say The Marshall Mathers LP is his best.
Oasis and Muse come to mind. I was very young when Oasis were popular and they just didn't appeal to my demographic; as for Muse, I just struggled to appreciate their appeal, but progressive rock is something that takes time to fully take in, even in 'lite-bites' like Muse.

I don't change my mind too much on music but ...... Muse.

At first I thought they were a histrionic Radiohead meets Queen hybrid; but their sheer power of song writing; humour; and great live performing has won me over.

Whilst their are numerous acts where I have not been impressed by their early output but prefer their later work and vice versa but that is not really changing my music tastes.

Coldplay

Most of the way through the decade I dismissed them. Now I really like most of their singles.

The Beatles I didn't really have much time for when I first properly started getting into music, as I started out listening to The Velvet Underground, Suicide, dub reggae etc - what was deemed to be 'cool' by the people I mixed with and spoke to (hopelessly pretentious faux-hipsters mostly). I think when you're young and impressionable you tend to be more of a sheep and try to fit in, but it's only really been in the past 2 or 3 years, since I moved to Dorset, that my tastes have matured and I please only myself. Like I used to think Wings were really awful, just going off Mull Of Kintyre etc, but having listened to the Band On The Run LP a lot recently I'm now of the view that Paul McCartney still had a lot left to give post-Beatles.

Band on the Run is a very good album. Mull of Kintyre is indeed rather uninspiring but it was a double a-side with Girls School which is a much better song.

Abba. I hated them with a vengeance in the seventies, I was into hard rock and metal and they seemed to be everything I didnt like about music at the time.

Now I love them!, I realise I didnt really listen to them at the time, just dismissed them because of the eurovision connection and the 'silly' outfits. I started to enjoy them round about the mid eighties and now they are one of my fav all time bands..great songs!.

I don't think I've heard Girls School yet, not knowingly anyway! I heard Jet on the radio a couple of months back and that's what led me to investigate Band On The Run, which is indeed a very good album.. proving to be a firm favourite :D Are there any other Wings LP's worth investigating?

Girls School is great.

Not to be confused with Girl School the band however, as they were crap.

Mmm. Of Paul's post Beatles career many critics and fans (including myself) regard his 1971 album Ram as his finest work; but if you like to hear Wings rocking out then I would recommend his last McCartney/Wings album Back To The Egg (1979) or Venus & Mars (1975) next.

But as you appear to be UK based I'd recommend you sign up to streaming sites Spotify or We7 and give them a listen. If you want to buy a compiliation of MacCa's Best work 1970-1984 then I can't recommend Wingspan Hits & History 2CD compiliation highly enough.

Some of McCartney's other best 1970s rock tracks:

Oh Woman Oh Why 1971 (B-side to Another Day)

Junior's Farm 1974 (single)

Getting Closer 1979 (Back To The Egg album)

Muse..... like TiP, I always thought of them as a Queen tribute act - and some of their stuff does veer scarily close to Freddie and the boys - but after the last 2 albums, I'm a convert. I even saw them live at Glastonbury headlining on the Sunday and they still didn't work for me (in fairness, they WERE on Queen-overdrive that night).... but I absolutely love the last 2 albums. To my shame, I've not yet invested in the earlier ones.

Led Zep for me, too..... too young to remember them first time round and a band I'd always steered away from due to their 'rock' credentials - but I have, in the past few years, bought all their albums - and apart from the later ones, they're all magnificent.

My Chemical Romance... hated them back in 2006 with the whole 'emo' tag and thought "Welcome To The Black Parade" was completely overblown and pretentious. I kind of had to hide my love of "Famous Last Words" until the whole scene disappeared and now, after listening to 'The Black Parade' in full, can't wait to hear what they'll come up with this year.

Also Paramore, thought they were really whiny and Hayley Williams was plain annoying until "Decode" when I had to grudgingly offer them some respect. Then "Ignorance" came along and it just clicked with me, I got Brand New Eyes for Christmas and both 'Riot!' and 'All We Know Is Falling' in the HMV sales. 'Riot!' is now one of my favourite recent albums and I can't believe I didn't love "Misery Business" as soon as I first clapped ears upon it.
