January 8, 201015 yr I really , truly. honestly could care less about what other people think of this song. You COULD care less? Why do you care at all?
January 8, 201015 yr Life is tough. Fireflies sounds quite a bit like We Will Become Silhouettes but whether a song becomes a hit or not can often be down to timing. In the UK, that sort of retro 80s sound became popular last year with the likes of La Roux. It may not be fair but Owl City got the timing right whereas The Postal Service didn't. Very true -_- This emo-electro hybrid sound hasn't exactly been massive in the UK before now, in fact the only hit I can think of other than this that has come from the genre is Here (In Your Arms) by HelloGoodbye. I wonder if there have already been accusations that Owl City are copying them

January 8, 201015 yr Clicky Linky Hope that clears it up O inquisitive one.. -_- Wow, someone wrote a freaking ARTICLE on it to avoid typing 3 more freaking characters. It's wrong. Get over it.
January 8, 201015 yr Wow, someone wrote a freaking ARTICLE on it to avoid typing 3 more freaking characters. It's wrong. Get over it. Get over it? You're the one who asked. Fine, next time I will not bother to explain.. Edited January 8, 201015 yr by anxresi
January 8, 201015 yr ha at this advert being at the top of the page for me; http://second-address.co.uk/ all this discussion of The Postal Service was being taken rather too literally

In the UK, that sort of retro 80s sound became popular last year with the likes of La Roux. It may not be fair but Owl City got the timing right whereas The Postal Service didn't. In other words, The Postal Service were about 6 years ahead of everyone else. :) Isn't this what generally always happens in music though? A band/artist make an album with a refreshing sound to what's currently "out there" and gets a lot of critical acclaim but the public don't catch on because it doesn't get much mainsteam exposure. 12+ months down the line and a host of other acts have made an album of the same sound but more commercially friendly and they end up getting more of the sales and we end up with a highly diluted market. 'Such Great Heights' was released over 7 years ago, 'Give Up' over 6. It's amazing how much they're being mentioned in the media because someone from now sounds like them. To me, that just shows how good they are. No one will bat an eyelid to Owl City in 7 years time, let alone have various internet media defending him.
January 8, 201015 yr Can't believe I didn't vote on this before! I can hear how he is influenced by the Postal Service in terms of his sound, but his songwriting is quite original, you couldn't think Fireflies is a Postal Service song. Anyway, apart from being US number ones they're quite different, but I expect this to do a Jay Sean in the UK, to peak between 2 and 5 but stick around for ages :)
January 8, 201015 yr I aodre The Postal Service after being introduced to them one drunken night before Christmas... Whilst the song is clearly similar it's just another modern update on a sound that well atm is clearly underepresented in the music industry. Forget Feb 7th. I think this will be #1 before the month is out as they're bound to add it to iTunes early if the fake version keeps shooting up. It's been #1 in both America and Australia so I think it has every chance to do so here. I'll eat my shaving foam if 'Fireflies' isn't one of the top 10 singles of 2010. :P

January 8, 201015 yr ^^^ He's hitting the market at the perfect time really. I can only really see Marina and The Diamonds being a huge #1 threat over the next 6 weeks and I doubt Iyaz or Samson can hold on for that long so he has it in the bag unless we have a shock contender emerge [basshunter returns to #1 after his shock CBB victory :drama:].
January 8, 201015 yr #1 definately. I think some people are forgetting this is an Owl City thread, enough of the freaking Postal Service :P
January 8, 201015 yr I knew who The Postal Service were months ago before I heard this and liked them, and I did think of them when I first heard this... but I still love this to bits anyway. It's an obvious #1.
January 8, 201015 yr As predicted by several people here, the Owl Service version is now available on iTunes and is already ahead of the fake version.

This track could at least stay at #1 for at least 5 to 8 weeks, maybe even more depends what else comes out along the way.
