releases; week #02 2010

singles;

This week is another slow week, with only six singles getting a full release. Guillemots lead single Fyfe Dangerfield releases his debut solo single 'She Needs Me'; taken of his debut record 'Fly Yellow Moon', set for release next week. Coming off the back of four top 40 singles, and two top 20 albums with his band, it will be interesting to see what impact he has on the chart this coming week. We also see limited releases with new singles by Good Shoes and These New Puritans respectively, although both are doubtful to make an effect on the chart this week.

On the download side of things, there are a few major releases which could catch peoples attention this week. We see the release of Jay-Z's new single 'Young Forever', which features Kanye West protégé Mr. Hudson. Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter), will be looking to build on mega hits 'Run This Town' and 'Empire State of Mind'. The song has already reached #27 in the UK, and will no doubt climb the chart with increased publicity and video play in the coming weeks. Carter's latest record 'The Blueprint 3' has already sold well over two million copies worldwide since its release last September. Also released this week is Jordin Sparks' third UK single from her second album 'Battlefield', named 'Don't Let it Go To Your Head'. Both previous releases from her second record have made their way into the UK top 20, but with limited publicity for this new release it remains to be seen if this one can match up in the charts. Also this week we see new releases from 'Stop and Stare' stars OneRepublic with 'All The Right Moves', Paolo Nutini with '10/10' and punk rock band Alkaline Trio with 'This Addiction', amongst others.

albums;

Vampire Weekend present their second album 'Contra' this week, the follow up to critically acclaimed self-titled debut record. 'Contra' includes the single 'Cousins' and the free release from last year 'Horchata', and you can listen to it all on their official Myspace page. 'Contra' has been met with similarly strong reviews by most music critics, and it will be interesting to see how well the record does in the chart over the coming weeks. In the case of their debut album, it charted strongly to start but as mainstream coverage increased, it finally made a peak of #15 nearly three months after initial release, and went on to spend over 35 weeks over the chart. Manchester born indie band Delphic release their debut album 'Acolyte' this week off the back of a lot of mainstream press and hype surrounding the band in the past few weeks. The band, said to sound a bit like Bloc Party, have also been named #3 on the BBC Sound of 2010 list, and whilst that can help a lot of acts, others haven't been able to deal with the pressure that this new found 'fame' brings.

Other releases this week include You Me at Six's second release 'Hold Me Down', the follow up to their 2008's #25 album 'Take Off Your Colours'. The band have built up a bit of a following over the last few years, so I would expect this album to do as well if not better than their previous album. Dutch Pop start Esmee Denters releases her debut record 'Outta Here' in the UK as well this week, despite it already being available in other countries since early last year. Her only over previous hit in the UK was the single of the same name as the album; 'Outta Here' made #07 back in August 2009. Also released are All Angels 'Fly Away', Ok Go 'Of the Blue Colour of the Sky' and Sinitta's 'Greatest Hits'.

The Delphic single is pretty good, shame it won't get top 40 tomorrow, the album could do very well, I reckon it could muster a top 3 entry.
Delphic sound nothing like Bloc Party, if they did I wouldn't like them.

Surely they are not perfect COPIES of Bloc Party that you wouldn't like them? :/

Delphic do not sound like Bloc Party. :/

On the Bloc Party front I am only going off what people have said in the Indie Forum; I haven't really listened to them myself.

More reviews added! Thanks everyone.

They don't sound like Bloc Party, but there are definite similarities which are evident in some of the songs.

Not vocally wise, but many of the instrumentals/ backing tracks sound like they could be on a Bloc Party album.

And the ending of 'Counterpoint' (including the vocals) sounds very similar to the ending of 'This Modern Love'...

Obviously not quite as epic as the Bloc, but 'Acolyte' is a pretty amazing album imo. Best of '10 so far. :wub:

Nothing?

Nothing at all?

I could name at least 1 thing that makes them sound similar.

Bloc Party's music has such a breadth that there are eras of Bloc Party music that dont sound much like Delphic.

However, if you cannot hear the similarities between Counterpoints climax and that of So Here We Are you have problems in the hearing department.

Also, the intro to Doubt with it's cut up vocal samples while not exactly the same certainly sound like those from Hunting for Witches and the clean guitar at its climax reminds me alot of some of the stuff off Intimacy.

If you choose to listen to Bloc Party in your spare time, you have problems in the hearing department.
